Is the class 175 the only 2nd/3rd gen DMU that hasn't touched any area of Yorkshire? I know this unit hasn't but are there any others that have worked neither ECS nor passenger services in the region? Can't think of any off hand; basically from 142 upwards..

Class 159, whilst similar to 158's won't have worked anywhere in Yorkshire to the best of my knowledge. Also classes 165/166 & 168 will be no-shows as well.

Class 171 and/or 172? I guess it depends on whether you just lump them under the "Turbostar" umbrella, or consider them separate DMUs in their own right.

There was a 171/8 at NRM Railfest in 2004, if that counts, and by the same token 165 and 166 units were built in York.

159s have been to Doncaster for refurbishment, they may have passed through on their way to/from Roysth for fitting out aswell. But yes, they have never worked in regular service

Though the 159/1s spent most of their early lives on the Standedge route- albeit as 158s...

Also, when the original 159s were being sent down from Rosyth to Salisbury, did they go via Yorkshire?

IIRC, the prototype PPM was tested on the Wensleydale Railway, wasn't it?

Ah, but that wasn't a 139. Only the Stourbridge ones are.

Surely from Class 140 upwards....

175s were subleased to TPE until the 185s turned up.

Essentially they just carried on doing the same FNW routes they'd been doing since introduced, only under a different name. I don't think they are cleared east of Guide Bridge or Hazel Grove.

Don't think they were even cleared to Hazel Grove at the time. Although, given 180s and 185s were cleared to Hazel Grove at a later date it probably would just be a case of completing the paperwork to have used 175s to Hazel Grove.

165s and 166s haven't been around these parts, but IIRC (despite the problems that they have in some areas due to their size) they are cleared to Whitby - not sure why they ever needed this paperwork or whether there was some Cunning Plan that suggested they'd be working from Middlesbrough...

The 171s worked to York on test from Derby. Well technically, they were 170s at the time as couplings were still the originals. I have a shot of 170726 at York sometime in 2003/04 I think.

Wouldn't the 159/1s have worked in Yorkshire when they were TPE 158s?

Also how were the 159/0s originally delivered from Rosyth to Salisbury? Under their own power or hauled?

Indeed, but they weren't 159s at the time.

Under their own power. I don't know whether they were routed via the East or West Coast main lines up to Rosyth, but there's photos of units stabled at Edinburgh Waverley en route.

The class 165/ 166s were built in York so they would have done some test / ECS in Yorkshire.

Doubt it as they'd probably be out of gauge

I have a vague memory of being in the back of my parent's car on the A64 in the early 1990s. As we went over the bridge over the ECML, a modern ('Networker' style cabs) two-car NSE-liveried unit passed under us heading North towards York and I'm fairly certain it was a 165- a 466 would have to be towed and the 365s are 4-car! They (the 165s) were built in York, so presumably are (or were) cleared on at least one route between there and their operating area.
