Hi guys I am about to start my new career in the oil and gas industry. The job I am taking has a 24 hr notice system so I will have 24hrs to get from Cambridge to Aberdeen heliport. The thing I am trying to work out with no luck is what is the latest I could leave and get to Aberdeen the same day also is the sleeper any good cheers

Any aviation buffs that know flight details from any airport near Cambridge would be a help as well cheers

Do you drive? If so, Norwich Airport might be your best bet. BMI Regional has a flight as late as 1955 SX from there. Eastern Airways also fly from Norwich.

The last rail connection from Cambridge to Aberdeen arriving the same day is the 1601, changing at Peterborough and Edinburgh, arriving Aberdeen at 0004. The same applies on all weekdays.

To use the sleeper you will need to leave no later than around 6pm, as it leaves Euston at just after 8pm on weekdays. (See below.)

presumably the OP could use the lowland sleeper which leaves later and get a connecting train in Edinburgh?

Yes, I forgot about that one, which gives an extra 3 hours in the evening, but won't arrive Aberdeen until almost 11 o'clock in the morning.

You're thinking of Sundays; it's an hour later in the week. Indeed, NRE offers a weekday itinerary of departing at 1925 and arriving at Aberdeen at 0734 using the sleeper. However, apparently, Dyce is actually the nearest station to the airport (Wikipedia even mentions its popularity with oil workers) which adds an extra connection (and time) to the railway journey.

Note to the OP: bear in mind the sleeper doesn't run on a Saturday night.

Yes, I forgot about that one, which gives an extra 3 hours in the evening, but won't arrive Aberdeen until almost 11 o'clock in the morning.

The connection from Edinburgh does continue to Dyce however, arriving there at 11:11 - this includes a 1 hour connection at Edinburgh, time enough for shower/breakfast if on time, and still being able to make the connection with anything but the worst delay.

However, I think this would mean you wouldn't get the most benefit from the flexipass tickets on the Sleeper, which may be the most economical option if you're not able to buy in advance.

Had a quick look at flexipass and could not tell how they operate - could I share one ie ten seperate tickets/vouchers or is it only usable by the purchaser?

Yep they are transferrable. Often carnet-type tickets are, the idea being that (for example) a company can buy them then distribute them to employees as required.
