Hello,

does anybody know if you could commercialize an openbve route?

I mean, I know it's an opensource software but I am not sure if you could sell it or it's specified on the license something about it. I could not find anything in this respect.

Thank you.

Hi,

The spirit of openBVE is just that open ie not a commercial venture or a sim that one would make money from. Everything including the hundreds of hours the members of the community is put freely to develop content for openBVE.

I personally would encourage to look elsewhere if you wish to make yourself some money. Though more than happy if wish to make anything for our great little sim.

Bye for now,

Stephen.

To put it simply you just can not take work by others and decide to sell it.

Although you could make new work that uses the Open Bve program to run it that has a cost to it.

This new work would have to do what the paid for commercial sims have to do, that's pay companies to use their intellectual property.

That's not cheap, that's why there's not a Virgin liveried Class 390 available on Train Simulator for example.

But you will find I've just released a free Class 57/3, that has two trademarks in it.

Virgin and Thunderbirds.

So how do I get away with that, with no payment to them both?

Or Virgin and Carlton Television.

I make work for free use, at no cost to the user and they more than likely think there is no gain trying to get me to pay and my use is basically free advertising for them.

Hi,

yes, I absolutely agree with both of you. The question came just because I was asked to do a specific route (not very complicated) for a train simulator and integrate with the system. I was not sure I could use OpenBVE or I should purchase BVE Trainsim, since I would not do it for free.

Definitely I am not going to take an already made route/train and sell it. Sorry if I did not explain well enough, but that's not my intention.

Thank you for you answers and opinions.

You could charge for the the 3d model and include a blank or fictitious livery and then offer the proper liveries as a separate and free download.

You might be better off looking at a licence agreement with Dovetail games for the use of Train Simulator. They're commercial and I know that they have licensed their software for driver training etc. Having read the other forum you posted in, you might like to know that that program uses LUA code for system calls, so it wouldn't be impossible to devise an API that uses those .lua calls when you pass a certain point or do something in the simulator.

Assuming you use your own assets then yes. The software licence makes no difference to your route licencing unless you wish to bundle the software with it, though I recall it being a fairly open licence, so you'd probably have no issues there either.

I could, but I would not for that is against the principles of bve.

Although you do have a point, Bve4Trains has just over 32,000 hits per year even if only half of them downloaded content and paid say two quid for each download I would have no need to have a job and do this full time.

I would also have the cash to travel around getting the photo's needed for more new work on the Triumph 675R I've just bought!
