Right. Fine. In that case, we then board 2J32, the 1136 Northern service to Ashton-under-Lyne, arriving there at 1206 on Friday afternoon.

If this isn't valid now I will go skits!

Firstly Dan, I agree with you in theory. I can see why in the real world someone would travel into Eccles and then walk the short distance to the Metrolink station. Say they were travelling in from (like your move did) Liverpool and wanted to get to Salford. Much easier to change at Eccles and get tram to Salford, then go into Manchester.

However what seem's logical in real life, must be suspended in the game. Only because it opens a can of worms. Look at me the other day. A stones throw from Moor Street in Birmingham and I couldn't get there as it would be invalid.
In real life it's very much something somebody would do but almost every single move could involve the same kind of issues if we allowed them in the game.

However Dan, you have potentially put my head in a noose here.
You've taken us to Ashton Under Lyne and as I said earlier it is on the Metrolink map referred to as a 'Rail Interchange' unlike Eccles.

Thus I will be a crazy son of a gun and play the move...

We make use of that interchange and board the 1219, Metrolink service as far as Piccadilly Station arriving at 1253 on Friday afternoon

BUT

I know it may be viewed as invalid so if it is then I play this move

1226 Northern Rail service (Stalybridge - Liverpool Lime Street) as far as Manchester Victoria arriving there at 1235 on Friday afternoon

This should avoid a hold up to the game of any massive length. I probably won't be on tomorrow so just the wait needed for the Metrolink move to be allowed or disallowed and then your on your way again.

This section of our travels will henceforth be known as 'The Metrolink conundrum'

Whilst I agree that the heavy rail and light rail systems at Altrincham are contained in the same building complex at Altrincham Interchange, the new terminal Manchester Metrolink stop at Ashton-under-Lyne is quite some distance away from the heavy rail railway station there and a major road runs between the two sites.

This posting that I made upon the thread yesterday should be read as confirming the two distinct and separate locations at Ashton-under-Lyne.

Having been there within the last few days, on a Manchester Metrolink tram journey there, I can vouch for the veracity of my comments.

Changing mode of transport at this travel interchange we exit the station and board the 13:15 First Manchester bus service 58 to Wrens Nest (Shaw), Smallbrook Road/Wrens Nest arriving at 13:52 on Friday.

Changing the service bus, we next board the 1402 First Manchester service 59 to Oldham Mumps Interchange that arrives there at 1421 on Friday afternoon.

NOTE : The Manchester Metrolink now has its newly resited stop at this interchange. The old former Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway station where the original Manchester Metrolink stop was situated is no longer in use.

Guys seriously, they're like 400 metes apart?

Google Maps puts it 0.2miles and a 3 minute walk between Eccles railway station and Metrolink stop..

Changing the service bus, we next board the 1402 First Manchester service 59 to Oldham Mumps Interchange that arrives there at 1421 on Friday afternoon.

We wait at the interchange before boarding the 14:36 First Manchester 59 to Piccadilly Gardens, Lever St/Dale St, arriving at 15:44 Friday afternoon.

We have an unusual situation here. Initially I thought this was a walk between different locations but looking in more details there are actually several stops named Piccadilly Gardens which could be counted as forming a single interchange although some of them are considerable distance apart. Before making a decision on this I'd like to ask the opinion of the players on here on here if wakling between these stops should be allowed or not. I'm not sure if it would be possible to make the minimum 5 minute connection time between them. If a 5 minute connection is possible then there's actually a 1550 departure on route 216.

Additionaly the traveline timetable does not show the 216 as serving Drolysden Market Street.

Because of the large number of bus services with a large number of stances that all go under the name of Piccadilly Gardens as the bus station, that same bus station should be regarded as a single entity and walking should be allowed between any bus stops there..

This is my own personal view on matters, based on very many years experience of the bus station there.

Is five minutes sufficient for interchange between any of the stops at Piccadilly Gardens or should we define a longer time?

In that case we will RESUME from Piccadilly Gardens at 1544 on Friday with DanTrainMan185 having priority to post the next move until 2200 after which time it becomes open floor. Should the 216 be taken, the first availabe service is at 1550 according to traveline.

Piccadilly Gardens is just a series of bus stands. Five minutes is absolutely more than enough to change.

With regards to Market Street, I used the Stagecoach Manchester 216 timetable, and it says Market Street on it. I did intend to use Traveline, but it wasn't working this morning. Droylsden tram stop is on the junction of Market Street and Ashton New Road.

The rules do require that traveline be used, if you use a different timetable then there's always the risk that traveline will show different information and so I woud have waited until traveline was working before posting a bus move. In this case the move isn't valid regardless of the name of the destination stop since traveline shows a departure at 1550 which is more than 5 minutes after 1544. The game becomes open floor at 2200.

This is getting beyond a joke.

Right, 1550 number 216 arriving at Droylsden Metrolink at 1612.

There is a reason as to why this quiz is losing its popularity....

PS: this is my last posting on this quiz. It's too pedantic and just getting far too silly. It's only supposed to be fun and fictional but it's just going nowhere. A serious review needs to be in place on this once popular quiz.

I agree, t'was only a bit of fun, as much as I respect the need for guidelines, surely there is a better way than calling hold every few posts.

Anyways, Next we try to get away from the area completely and so board the 16:20 (according to traveline) Manchester Metrolink service to Manchester Piccadilly arriving there at 16:41 Friday Afternoon (East anglia anyone?)

I feel that as one who has made more postings upon this quiz than anyone else, 2605 from a total of 7161, my views upon matters are those gained from experience of the nuances inherant in certain modes of travel should also be offered an airing.

With the matter of rail services, matters such as parliamentary services do require a degree of knowledge regarding railway timetabling, but normally, rail services do not pose a problem upon this quiz.

The main bone of contention lies with the usage of bus services and the location of their stop positions, but this is what makes this particular quiz so mind-stretching, as much more thought needs to be given to this particular aspect of the quiz. Rather than to decry the quiz for being mind-stretching, one would hope that the challenges afforded would be one to look forward to. As an example that I am prone to citing at times like this, the crosswords in The Times and the Daily Telegraph are indeed challenging, but they offer far more mind-stretching than those in some of the "redtops".

Noting the 8 minute connection time at this large station, we next board the 1945 EC service to Edinburgh that arrives there at 2117 on Friday evening.

Observing the minimum connection of 15 minutes means we can catch the 08:03 Virgin service as far as Coventry arriving at 09:01 on Saturday morning.

We take a short hop on the 09:42 London Midland service to Birmingham International arriving there at 09:45, only to realise we are several months too early to be jetting off on a summer vacation as it is a cold saturday morning

I can see both points of view. Having had a fair few invalid posts in my time, I know the frustration.
However it is a good thing that the game like Paul said is challenging, and I guess certainly when it comes to buses and their stop locations, this challenge is going to lead to some invalid moves.

I would advocate a ruling that allows, especially in big cities, a bigger sphere of movement. For example, if someone found themselves at a stop on a side street in say Birmingham and 25-50 yards away was a main road with a bus stop at that junction with the side street they are on. It could be that the main road has a wider range of bus services. It would be logical for the person to walk that very short distance to catch a bus.
So the same goes for trains, trams (The Metrolink issues we have had of late being a fine example)

I do think this is possible as long as it is not taken advantage of, and I don't think the folk who do this quiz would do such a thing.
One last point is that, to use the example above, the person under the current rules would be forbidden from walking that short distance, yet they would be able to walk several times further at a large railway or bus station to change services. Even though in both cases a 5 minute minimum connection is allowed.
Eg. Arrive Manchester Piccadilly on a 390 from London, next move is a train to Preston from platform 14.

Any how, back to the action -

As it is a cold Saturday morning we want a long journey and seen as we spent a few hours the night before in Scotland, we wish to return.

Thus we board 9S51 the 0953, Virgin Trains service to Edinburgh Waverley arriving there at 1422 on Saturday afternoon

Alas we are too soon for the trams. Before we set off again we make a note to return to this fair city for ride on one.

Noting carefully the fact that a 10 minute connection time applies here, we are fortunate to be able to make our next journey with only a short delay as we board the 1435 First ScotRail service to Perth that arrives there at 1553 on Saturday afternoon.
