Hey guys,

Inspiration for this thread came originally from watching a video at work that was supposedly important for us to watch on Thursday, and the discussion I had with a fellow colleague afterwards.

I'm rather curious as to which stations have a supermarket on them/within close proximity to them. Let's start the ball rolling with these:

Hereford: Morrisons is quite literally over the road from the station
Manchester Piccadilly: Sainsburys Local is on the concourse, with a Tesco only about 3 minutes walk away towards Piccadilly Gardens
Birmingham New Street: Tesco Express is in The Pallasades, and there's a Tesco Metro less than 2 minutes walk away from the entrance to the station
Milford Haven: Tesco is right opposite the station
Newport: Tesco Express is down the road from the station. Cross the road out of the station, head into town and it's on the left, a little past Wetherspoon. Maybe 3 - 4 minutes walk away
Surrey Quays: There's a large Tesco a few minutes walk away. Cross the road, and I believe there's a footpath into the car park right next to you
Ely: A rather decent size Tesco is just a couple of minutes walk away. Cross the road outside the station and follow the footpath down into the store's car park
London Paddington: Sainsburys Local is tucked into a corner of The Green, just past Yo! Sushi IIRC
Worcester Foregate Street: Tesco Metro is literally right by the station entrance, in the former Post Office building.
Leeds: Sainsburys Local is in the retail bit of the concourse, down by McDonalds and Subway
Newcastle: Sainsburys Local is right tucked away down by the bay platforms, very easy to not see it there if you're not aware of it!

That's a few I can think of, and you'd think I was a Tesco spotter going by that list! Certainly not many supermarkets on stations themselves, not even the larger ones. Oh, and for this thread we're not including M&S Food as it cannot be classed as a supermarket. Or a decent foot outlet anyway...

So which ones do you know of? For the purpose of definition, ideally "near" a station should be within 5 minutes walk. This is why the Asda in that shopping centre across the road from Barking doesn't get included, by the time you actually walk from the station entrance, cross the road and get all the way to the other side of the shopping centre and down the escalator it's more than 5 minutes, even when wearing the soles of your trainers out at maximum rates!

Going up the ECML, the first one that strikes me is New Barnet, where the footbridge leads you almost directly into Sainsbury's car park (if you turn right at the top of the steps onto the bridge). Potters Bar has a Sainsbury's right next to the station building... and I think that's about it for my local stretch of track!

Yeah the shopping centre at Barking is kinda far from the station, doesn't take a lot of distance for it to be a 5 minute walk, I know my uni is a 10 minute walk from one end to the other (which I have to do often) yet no one believes me :(. Likewise the DLR station that looks "only across the road" but can be at least 7 minutes between leaving my flat and being on the platform or the bus stop. And 10 minutes is about the longest I'd consider to be walking distance

Anyway:
Beckton DLR has an Asda right across the road.
Clapham Junction has an Asda nearby but that is pushing the 5 minute limit.
Hounslow Central, Asda a 5 minute walk through side roads.
Hounslow West, there is a Morrison's across the road.
Ealing Broadway, Ealing Common and Northfields all have a Sainsbury's Local nearby.
Slough has a huge Tesco right next to the station, said to be one of the biggest.
Feltham, there is a Lidl right next to the station, been there for yonks (since the 1990s)

Nice one :)

Would be damn useful if we could have any of the Big Four (supermarkets!) with an outlet at Crewe, I've got to say. Plenty of room on platform 12...

There's nothing wrong with M&S Simply Food! Well apart from the price in some cases :P

More seriously, Keighley Asda has to come high up. Couldn't be any closer without being in the middle of the railway line!

I'm not sure why you've decided to exclude M&S Simply Food, as AFAIAC it's just another supermarket, Anyway, all of these stations also have an M&S Food on site too. As do Glasgow Central, Guildford, Edinburgh Waverley, London Euston (x2), St Pancras Intl (x2), Liverpool Lime St, London Liverpool St (x2), London Victoria (x2) and London Waterloo (x2) (I believe that most/all of these M&S Foods are all franchise outlets run by SSL.)

Euston also has a Sainsbury's Local.

Back when I did the Beckton branch in 2006 I think, I could have sworn a Tesco was nearby and my little group of nutters visited it for overnight supplies. Maybe I'm wrong, however I'm glad you've pointed it out as we were debating whether there was an Asda within a few minutes walk away from a station at all, so that's one at least!

Slough has a huge Tesco right next to the station, said to be one of the biggest.

Oh yeah, I'd forgotten about that one. Yes it is pretty big but much of that huge building is the car park underneath it! The shop itself isn't *that* big, Tesco Extra in Fforestfach, Swansea however is ginormous!

Ah yes, Euston does indeed, turning right outside the station and it's on the right IIRC.

My point about M&S Food was not to discuss whether or not stations have them or not, more that it cannot be including in the discussion primarily because a) I don't like them (harsh but true) b) I find their food well below the standard I'd expect from a 'first class' shop and c) They're outrageously expensive for what you get, taste and quantity.

Not on the NR network, but Kingston Park (T&W Metro) is right next door to a Tesco Extra. It used to be Britain's biggest supermarket and when it first opened, they had some staff on rollerblades!

Tesco is a fair distance away in Gallions Reach Shopping Park, nearest station is Gallions Reach and you are left with a 25 minute walk from there. Did it once, never again! :( Oh, and the Asda isn't 24 hours but the Tesco is.

I'll make my point about M&S Food with an example from my 14 day ALR trip in 2012:

Chicken and bacon sandwich, £3.50 I think it was, certainly close to it anyway. Very thin sandwich all in, with hardly anything in it and only just managed to taste something other than chicken in it.

Compare this to the chicken and bacon sandwich at Asda. £2 and the sandwich is almost doubled in size and has a far superior balance of chicken and bacon. There's even taste to the bread, unlike the M&S one.

That and other lousy experiences with M&S have put me off for life I'm afraid.

Asda in Keighley needs to be visited when I'm next up there. Which brings to mind an interesting point, since their HQ is in Leeds, why Asda have not got a store of any size on Leeds station is beyond me. The business they could gain from it...

Ahhhh, that'll be why we got a bus from there then as part of the London overnighter. Must be thinking of a different visit to Beckton myself then. Glad you cleared that up :)

Metro lines are also welcome :)

Aye I think the same happened in Cribbs Causeway some years ago, too many accidents put a stop to that.

The Asda isn't 24 hours so it can't have been that at night, the Tesco indeed is. The Asda is crap anyway and I avoid it as far as possible! :D

West Ealing, there is a Waitrose right next to the station.
At Ilford there is a Sainsbury's around the corner.

Historically Safeway purchased quite a number of ex-station good yards as sites for stores. Stratford on Avon, Newark Castle, a now tram stop near Rochdale, Reddish South(?) and Seamer come to mind.

Good stuff :)

I'll try and get all these locations added to the first post at some point, for easy reference. Obviously credit will be given to those who've commented with locations and directions :)

Stratford-upon-Avon, yes this is a Morrisons but due to the way you've got to walk it, my visit there took 7-10 minutes despite being very close to the station. If the footpath and steps going up to the main road were still there, it would be so much quicker.

at the end of the high and low roads
Montrose has a fair size Co-op practically on the southbound platform and there's a large-ish Tesco about 5 minutes walk away.

Bath Spa has a Sainsbury's local opposite the bus station which is 2 minutes along the street from the station.

Trowbridge has an Asda under 5 minutes walk from the station.

There's a large Morrisons which couldn't be any closer to Inverness platform 1 (though it would take 2 or 3 mins to get round to the front door).

There's the smallest Tesco that I know of, right next to Westminster underground station - it's really just a corridor with a door at each end.

There's a large supermarket just at the front entrance to Brighton station, which is open 24 hours a day.

Edinburgh Waverley and Sheffield have decent M+S shops which are very popular.

And there's a supermarket adjacent to Whitby station on the east side.

If you got off a train at Bristol Temple Meads, then I wouldn't be surprised if you'd have to walk for 10 or 15 minutes to find a supermarket, though you could jump on a local train to Clifton Down, where there's a huge Sainsbury's on the passageway between the station and the main road, or to Lawrence Hill, with a big Lidl next to the station.

I think there's only a fire station between Skipton station and a large Morrisons, but again, the entrance is on the opposite side of the shop from the station.

There's a huge Tesco in the far end of the retail park which might be the only point in visiting Edinburgh Park station (as opposed to commuting to it).

Falkirk Grahamston has a 24 Hour Tesco on The Central Retail Park on the southbound platform side a minute away and an Asda a couple of minutes walk adjacent to the northbound platform.

Alloa has an Asda which dwarfs the "fun sized" station right next to it.

Do Co-Ops count - if so there is one about 100m from Exeter Central.
London Victoria has a Small Sainsburys in the shopping centre over the Southern platforms (very useful for food before getting a coach)

Here's some of the ones I have come across on my travels;

Gainsborough Central - There's a Tesco not far from the station, at the end of the cut through next to Marshalls Yard.

Gainsborough Lea Road - An Aldi a couple of minutes walk away, if you turn left out the station front.

Kings Lynn - A large Morrisons just around the corner from the station. Turn right out of the station, and right again past the Matalan.

Lincoln - Nothing that close, there's a largish Lincolnshire Co-Op at the back of the bus station just across the road and a Tesco Express over the High Street level crossing about 5 minutes walk away.

Newark Castle - As IanXC has already mentioned, the former Safeways store here has become a Waitrose. Visible from the platforms.

Nottingham - There's a Tesco Express directly outside the station on Station Street. A left turn out of the Tram Stop exit, or a right turn out of the main entrance and you'll see it on the opposite side of the road.

Sheffield - If you're not an M&S Simply Food fan, you can find a Sainsburys Local a few minutes away. Go out the station entrance and up through the fountains, cross the road and walk through the Hallam University campus and you'll see it at the base of the tall apartment building you can see from the station.

Skegness - This time there's a choice, of Lidl or Tesco. If you go into the bus station you can see both.

If I think of any more, I'll add them to the list. I must admit, I do tend to use M&S Simply Food stores or other station outlets so it's rare I venture in to supermarkets or convenience stores.

Merthyr Tydfil s adjacent to a large Tesco, which is bulit on the original station site.

There is a supermakret opposite Swansea station, though it is not one of the big names. It was originally CK Superstore, though now it is more ehavily branded with Nisa!

I think there's a Tesco near Milford Haven, but I don't know how long it would take to walk to it. The Tesco at Porthmadog should be reachable in 5 minutes form the station, and I seem to recall that there is a Co-op near Pwllheli station - though it's nearly twenty years since I was last there - which is built on one side of the former island platfrom.

Birmingham New St - Tesco is quite inaccessible at the moment. The tunnel that lead you there has now been shut, so you currently need to travel up the escalators, walk for a few minutes to the Pallasades, then take another tunnel across the front of New St, then turn right. Long...

There's a Co-Op next to Tywyn station.

Hastings has a Sainsbury's Local a minute away from the station, underneath the Station Plaza health centre. There's also a Tesco Extra not far down Havelock Road too.

Some from memory - there's a Tesco Express literally next door to Hackney Downs; a Morrison's within 90 seconds of Blackburn; both a Tesco Express and Sainsbury's opposite Birmingham Snow Hill; and a Co-Op over the road from Man Vic.
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
There's also a Co-Op within 2 mins of both stations at Blaenau Ffestiniog, and as Greenback says, a Tesco opposite (but about a 3 min walk) from Milford Haven.

:) There's also a small Co-op near to Manchester Piccadilly (nearer to the station than the Tesco mentioned by the original poster).

Some others...

Altrincham - Large Tesco's within 3 minutes of the station.

Brighton - M&S Food Outlet on the Station concourse.

Glasgow Central - M&S Food Outlet on the Station concourse.

Haywards Heath - Large Sainsbury's within 3 minutes of the station.

Horley - Waitrose within 3 minutes of the station.

Ilford - Large M&S within 4 minutes of the station.

Purley - Large Tesco's within 4 minutes of the station.

Whitechapel - Large Sainsbury's within 3 minutes of the station.

Cardiff Central has an M&S inside the concourse.
Bristol Temple Meads, surprisingly, doesn't have anything next to it; there's a Tesco Express on Victoria Street, but that's not exactly close. There is, however, a Nisa local supermarket next to Starbucks by Temple Quay offices.
Barry Docks has a Morrison's next to it.

Bromley South is next to Waitrose;
Dewsbury is 2 minute's walk from Lidl

What does that tell you about the two largish towns I've lived nearest to in the last 20 years?;)
