...and then late on a Sunday evening as well, by the sounds of things at that speed! ;)

Sunday 11 December 1983, mid morning, I was woken up by a whistling sound so jumped on my pushbike to no down to Moorthorpe South signal box to see what it was. On arrival I saw 40001 in the up loop on the end of an engineers train, other locos seen in that hour were 31226 and 46025 as well as the 40 and 08.

The fact I can remember it just by looking in my notebook is quite surprising over 30 years later. ;)

Another thing I can remember is 31295 (and 275 to a lesser extent) were sticking to me like glue, nearly everywhere I went these 2 would turn up, bearing in mind they were both vaccuum brake only shows how much VB stuff was still running around.

My memories of the 08s is that they replaced LNWR 7Fs dragging transfer freights around Preston. I suppose the ELR could be classed as main line.
The 15mphtop speed meant they shuffled around about the same speed as the 7Fs.
Question. Did the 08s operate the Ribble branch to replace the 7Fs?

08s used to move to and from between Bletchley and the works years ago, done during the quiet periods...luckily its not far, so didnt take long. of course today wolverton has its own shunters..celebrity 08 Haversham, along with named shunters wolverton and bradwell, these days with the works a quarter of the size and workforce things have changed...

08s would move north and south in freight jobs, con rods removed for the move...

Still on the mainline at Westbury working between the two yards on either side of the mainline. Got a fair bit of video of 08995 (a nice cut down cab one) doing some shunting between the two last year, it was then replaced overnight and another one was brought in by road.

Did Ribble Cement start to use industial/ex BR locos to transfer the wagons down to the mainline exchange sidings?
I am not 'up' on workings in that area, sorry.

I remember the pilot at Peterborough burbling through the station between Crescent workshops and Eastfield yard / stabling point. Also used to shunt the TPO stock to (the old) platform 1. Every so often it was doing it's best to be a 'mainline engine' as it passed through on the Down Fast.

If anyone in the know hears that this is to run, I'd also like to get out to see it.

Very happy memories of class 08s from my childhood. Indeed, one was the first thing I drove that wasn't a pushbike.

First thing I drove was 55019 around the back of Haymarket shed (cheers Gary), it was only about 200 yards but I am still counting it!

As long as it didn't emulate the one at Bletchley on one occasion (used to shunt parcels stock to the sidings on the other side of the Fast lines); upon being urged "not to hang around", it managed to bend a side rod whilst whizzing along the Up Fast thus causing many minutes of delays  (Long before delay attribution fortunately!)

The link above shows an 08 taking DBS coal wagons between Milford and Knottingley. Says it is the last place on the main line you can see them. I was wondering how often then ran and how you can tell on RTT that it will be an 08?

Any help appreciated.

I cannot copy the picture but the caption says.

Just noticed this thread which, I guess, was posted when the photo referred to was on the front page of the linked website (the Picture of the Day).

From the quoted caption I've identified it in the archives at:

http://www.railway-centre.com/march-2014.html (seventh row down)

An interesting website.
