The tour left Manchester late due to inoperative points at Castleton, meaning locos were initially facing wrong way and had to turn elsewhere, delaying arrival of the ECS into Manchester. 45407 then had to be removed at Warrington and the train proceeded cautiously to Crewe with just 44871. A 47 then had to be attached to the back to help the single black five over the Central Wales line curves and gradients. All that contributed to the delays. However the tour was on time again once it left Llandrindod as there was a lot of time allowed in the stops at both Knighton and Llandrindod.
