I think overall from this its is Leicester is the largest by district and Northampton is largest Urban Area.

Aside from that I would say Leeds is the largest with only one station in the city centre and the largest with only one station named after it.

There are two 'Darlington' stations; Bank Top and North Road. Newton Aycliffe is, I'm pretty sure, in the old Sedgefield district of County Durham.

Dinsdale is within the Darlington district but I'm not sure about Teesside Airport.

I'll chip in Sunderland if only counting heavy rail. ( 275,300 at the time of the 2011 census) (Wiki).

Inverness is about the same population as Wrexham town with its two stations, but five stations in the County.
Thought Inverness was bigger.

Inverness does come up to about 61,000 if you use Settlement data instead of Locality (including neigbouring villages like Culloden and Westhill).

I tend to think the Settlement definitions are not very useful though as for example the Glasgow settlement includes nearly all of West Central Scotland (including Airdrie, Paisley etc). Inverness is the largest Settlement with 1 station on this definition (until Culloden station reopens anyway).

On checking the Locality definitions though it came to my attention that Dyce is listed as a separate locality from Aberdeen (although they are in the same Settlement) so my assertion that Kirkcaldy was the largest town with one station is wrong and Aberdeen (locality population 195,021) is actually the largest Locality in Scotland with 1 station.

Dinsdale is still within the boundaries of the town of Darlington. Teesside Airport is within the borough of Darlington but I don’t think it forms part of the town. Aycliffe I think is without the boundary of both the town and the Borough. It was always part of Sedgefield BC until the boundaries were redrawn when the Darlington unitary authority came into being.

You may be right about Sunderland now the likes of Seaburn have gone over to purely metro based operations

why is the station in Middleton St. George called Dinsdale?

EDIT - will have to check one of my local history books at home!

DOUBLE EDIT- i THINK Middle St George is a much later village, mainly growing around the RAF Base nearby (now DTV airport) Dinsdlale (or more correctly Dinsdale Hall/Spa) was the nearest "known" location when the Stockton & Darlington railway opened

Dinsdale refers to the general area around that area of the river Tees. Dinsdale Park and Dinsdale Spa are large hall's near the river. Middleton St. George refers to the actual village that has grown around the station.
