There must be a fair number of stations where the platform position has 'retreated' from its original location, usually to the inconvenience of passengers who are faced with an extra walk to the train.

I'm thinking of places like Epsom Downs, Windsor and Eton Central and Marlow.

Any more?

Sudbury, Walton-on-the-Naze, Felixstowe, Sheringham (debatable), are a few East Anglian examples.

Or the other way, where previous lengthy platforms have been shortened, only a few years later to be found wanting for platform length.

Poulton-le-Fylde yes I am looking at you.

District Line stations between Upney and Upminster have platforms for around 12 coaches, with the section of platform not needed fenced off.
Also noticed a fenced off portion of the platform at Silverdale when I went there with some friends last week

Rowley Regis has a large portion of platform that is disused and slightly overgrown. If you wanted a fully retreated platform I think the best candidate is Smethwick West. :)

Bradford Exchange and Foster Square are getting further and further apart as the years go by. Like Eurasia and the Americas.

Felixstowe- there['s a carpark/market place between the remaining platform and the old building.

Would you include somewhere like Osterley where the District line station was moved 3/4 of a mile from a residential area to the arterial road known as the A4 where a small car park was built to suck in passing (or not) commuters?
This was many years ago.

Kings Cross? Buffer stops moved closer to the tunnels, but actual walk distance for passengers a more complex affair what with relocation of concourse. St Pancras, definitely- platforms for Midland Mainline services are now outside the original station, a very long way from the front entrance. Goes to show that this doesn't just apply to country terminals!

Some of the platforms on the GOBLIN line look like in the past they served longer trains than the current 2-car London Overground 172s

I think the original poster was asking about bufferstop stations where moving the platforms means shortening the railway. Many of the replies have been examples of this, but not all.

Yes I was after places where the railway has retreated and been replaced by a housing estate (Epsom) or shopping arcade (Windsor) or other development. Not just places where the platforms are shorter than they once were.

An interesting selection though. Thanks for all the interest

Western Region seems to have had a thing for this. As well as St Ives there are Looe, Exmouth and Windsor & Eton.

Windermere is another one.

There was talk of Lowestoft station relocating further up the line, was quite a few years ago now though...never happened. One plan even had trains terminating just west of Oulton Broad North crossing. I think they've just invested in a new bus terminal at Lowestoft central now so everything seems set to stay in place. (I left Lowestoft in 1998 so my information is very likely to be out of date!)

Does Liverpool Street count? Platforms were realigned (and some shortened) during the rebuilding work in the late 80s so that the buffer stops (except for Platforms 17 and 18) were all in alignment.

Also Platform 4 at Marylebone, about half of which was filled in to provide the permanent access to Platforms 5 and 6 once they opened (initially provided by using temporary "bridges" across the trackbed).

Someone said Balloch - has the station / platforms moved or is it just that Balloch Pier has closed?
