Reading the foregoing, I feel almost guilty about having slated Newport (Mon). In the larger stations that have loos, the blue lighting against hypodermic needle users says all about the likely clientele to be met with there.

Brighton station use to be like that in the disabled loo but not since they put the new loo blocks in.

Haywards Heath station was another his neon lighting at one time, this being the gents. Not sure if it's still the case. However I wouldn't say Haywards Heath or Brighton were stations I wouldn't want to be at.

Also I wouldn't linger at Patricroft too long; .

Best to go in The Queens Arms (Top House) next door, great ale and reputedly the world's first railway pub..or the Stanley in Patricroft,a few pints in there and you won't care where you linger!;)

Leeds is fine by me. Got a Wetherspoons, a Bookies & M&S, what more do you need to survive?

Stations that I do not want to be or go to. There's a few for me.

Dove Holes - the only station I haven't used on the Buxton Line. Dove is high up, can be freezing cold in the middle of summer and there's little of note there. The village itself isn't the nicest looking either.

Of the ones I've been to, Gorton and Hattersley are not particularly nice places.

Of the major stations, I hate London Euston. No seating, or hardly any. Its a horrible building, concourse miles from the platforms and the customary dash when the platform is announced. Sometimes I'd rather take the Megabus.

I don't care much for Leamington Spa. It's at the wrong end of town to visit the shops whilst waiting for a train and there are few facilities.

Having paid a visit to a far extreme of the London zones last week, I'm not sure I would want to be at Knockholt after-hours - the bridge over the line literally shook side to side as the non-stoppers went under! It is also a rather dull looking station generally - at least, in the daytime anyway, it has lots of interest in passing services.

Then when you don't think it can get much worse, the train you are waiting for to London, standing by the ticket office, sails past you and has you legging it down the platform to catch up!

A simple (very) deep clean would improve the lot no end...

Agreed - can you imagine how much reflective everything would be then :o

Yes, I think you're always going to get a bit of grime, particularly given the number of diesel services using it. However, cleaning the glass sections would certainly be a good thing.

Incidentally, I notice they've been resurfacing the floor over the past few days.

Yep, the old grey flooring has been replaced with new grey flooring

It's been mentioned already but Dudley Port is a horribly uneasy place any time of day.

I don't mind Euston, Coventry, Birmingham New Street - at least they have facilities and are relatively safe places.

Me too, changed there today, can't see what all the fuss is about. That said I have been there in rush hour too and yes it is busy, but not by London standards.

I would worry most about people feeling threatened on a station. Fit them with panic buttons, that may help.

I believe it's something non-slip? The old one being all cracked and marked and perpetually dirty (as well as grey concrete - what's up with some tiles!?) was one of my pet peeves. This looks like it might be better, but it's still grey - and I'll reserve judgement until it's finished and worn-in.

If it IS non-slip coating, my cynical side wonders if it's covering their arses more than anything to do with a much-needed aesthetic improvement :/

Eeeeesh, nice parts of town! Not!

When heading out to Glossop, one always feels a sigh of relief on making it to Broadbottom unscathed :P

I genuinely don't get the hate on Leeds station. It does its job very well and I will never ever ever have to use that subway (with the gents loos) ever again.

If they painted some of the station a different colour it'd be really nice.

I could give all sorts of suggestions for improvements and there's all sorts of problems.

But I can't see them adding up to the hate I see here.

Perhaps it's a combination of the fact that, having had so much time and money spent doing it up, that really should have yielded something something much better than what we've got (taking a jealous glance at the other end of the line at King's Cross) - and also that some people don't remember what it was like before? I certainly never saw it before 2011 anyway.

Also perhaps, I think it's clear Newcastle Central will look better when it's finished, Liverpool Lime Street looks slightly better, Manchester Piccadilly looks much, much better... and the main hell holes that you could say Leeds always looked better than, Birmingham New St and Manchester Victoria are now being done up too!

Mention of Man Vic and Birmingham New ST brought back some memories of threads a few years ago for the 10 worse stations in the county. I believe New st, Kirkgate, Man Vic and Sunderland were always in the top four or five. In a couple of years time all will have been done up extensively so maybe not the hell holes they once were.

Ardwick, remember a couple of people off here paying a visit and saying the approach was as grim and unwelcoming as the platform looks from the train.

Never been, don't want to.

Ardwick is a really weird one. It looks like the kind of station that is only served by one train a week at the platforms are about two feet long.

Go ever so slightly down the line towards Stockport and you get to Levenshulme. Utterly dreadful.

High Wycombe should get a mention on the basis that the third platform is a long walk from the other two, and the only train that leaves from there is as slow as f*ck. Plus, it's High Wycombe.

Three Bridges is kind of grim.

Otherwise known as emergency call points ?
Many stations already have them.

Which I've never seen anyone answer during periods of disruption. To be fair I've rarely seen it used.

As for stations, what about underpasses and subways. Hassocks is run down below. I'm sure many others are too.

Chester.
For a 'County Town' station, I find it grim, depressing and dirty.
OK, the approach on foot from the outside is impressive, as is the refurbished bit just inside the entrance. However, as soon as you move down the platform or cross the footbridge it's like entering another world.:| Litter, peeling paintwork, and often the need to wear waders when using the loos.

My least favourite stations are as followed.
Stapleton Road (Bristol)
Lawrence Hill (Bristol)
Filton Abbey Wood (Bristol)
Now that is the horrible part of Bristol.

The lack of sheltered waiting areas on the main platforms are an issue, and the gun-metal grey is not the best colour you'd choose for a station. But beyond that, I'm struggling to see too much wrong with the place. The wind howls through the place but that's just the nature of where it is, the old station was even worse for that. The only thing that needs updating is the 60s concourse, and it's a shame they didn't do it with the rest of the station.

Having spent too long waiting for TransPennine trains on what is now platform 15, back when it was outdoors and totally exposed to the elements, I rather like the new place.

E&C seems to have had a lick a paint as it seemed less gloomy in there was I passed through last week.

Some of the stations on the coastway west line between Portsmouth and Brighton. I used to come back that way on Sunday night. There were invariably be engineering work every weekend and you would be dumped at some uninviting barren halt with high sercurity fencing and those drafty identikit shelters. You would then find your way to the replacement bus service as the station was unmanned and then wait at a bus stop on a busy A-road and hope the bus would turn up.

Hayes & Harlington which has a major bird problem which could easily be fixed with canopy netting
