With Settle in mind, but coming from a different direction, does anyone on this thread know how well loaded are the Bowland Transit services 10 and 11 from Clitheroe Interchange to Settle and on to Horton-in-Ribblesdale ?

They appear to have connections with the trains from Manchester at Clitheroe Interchange.

There is a new Transdev route 873 Sundays and Bank Holidays which runs Ilkley Railway Station to Skipton via Bolton Abbey and Embsay. The timetable has 4 round trips (some extended to Malham), 3 serve Skipton Railway station. All stop near the station approach in Embsay, but the Bolton Abbey stop is about a 1/2 mile walk from the YDR. Although infrequent the times are convenient for a day trip to the YDR but you need to consult the timetable.

That's not a new route as such, it's the regular Dalesbus service but renumbered from 883. The 884 has been withdrawn as the X84 is running on summer Sundays.

Further to this I have had email conversation with NYCC who confirm that the vehicles do not carry standing passengers, so once 16 people are on, that is it.

They also say that the Embsay school service will be two separate vehicles so can carry 32 school children.

The 580 is replaced by NYCC 58 running Monday to Friday only: 3 return journeys from Skipton to Giggleswick and 3 return journeys from Skipton to Hellifield. This will be a 16 seater vehicle.

The basic times are; 08:35 10:45 12:45 Skipton to Giggleswick; 10:20 12:20 14:20 Skipton to Hellifield; 09:25 11:25 13:25 Giggleswick to Skipton and 09:16 10:46 12:46 14:46 Hellifield to Skipton.

What a pitiful service, compare to once hourly Skipton - Lancaster service, which was jointly operated with Ribble between Ingleton & Lancaster.

It would be interesting to know how much it costs for NYCC to operate bus services directly compared with a commecial operator operating under tender.

Interesting point

I.e. - we have no intention on spending any more of our cash on it, we are not going to subsidise a decent service, and unless someone comes in to do it commercially you can lump it.

Unfortunately, the running cost of a full size buses like, what Pennine have been using, is a lot higher then that of a minibus, like what NYCC are planning on using.

Just out of interest, what is the current return fare on Pennine, between these points ?

It will be less. Settle to Skipton is £7 return so I can't see Gargrave to Skipton being any more.

Update, from a friend: Gargrave - Skipton is £5 single and £6 return.

So when NYCC, starts running the service from Monday 19th. There going to be about 50% fare increase. I can see that going down well with the passengers.

The following Notice as appeared on Pennine website.

NOTICE OF CLOSURE

It is with regret that as from close of business on the 16th May, 2014 Pennine Motors will no longer trade as a bus company.

This is due to the free travel payments from North Yorkshire Council being reduced by 20% and another bus company running too many buses on our main bus route between Skipton and Barnoldswick .

I am sure you will appreciate that this has been a very difficult decision for myself and my family as my Grandfather founded the business in 1925 together with his brother and brother in law, but unfortunately it is no longer financially viable.

I would like to thank all our loyal customers for their unwaivering support over the last 88 years.

A poster in the Craven Herald is saying that the proposed return fare on the new NYCC service from Gargrave to Skipton will be £9.10! The equivalent fare on the train is only £2.90.

A update on there says the fares are going to be held at Pennine rates for day returns.

There will no longer be season tickets - but then there's no buses at times to suit most of the people who would use them.

It will be Pennine Motors' last day tomorrow, after 88 years in business.:(

I haven't seen anything about a replacement for the 210 Skipton to Malham service. Will Malham be left without a daily bus now? (The NYCC 211 service only runs Monday, Wednesday and Fridays. And the times are pretty useless)

This matter appears to have occurred for an inopportune time for the summer tourist potential for the area.

I'm really saddened by this. If it's possible to have a favourite bus operator then Pennine would have been mine. My first solo '3 bus' trip when I was about 10 was with them. I regularly used to take the bus from home in to Bradford and then take a second to Skipton and then come home. One Saturday, I got my mother's permission to go on to Malham and back on the Orange and Black Pennine bus. It was very exciting at the time! With a 2 hourly service, I had time to walk to the bottom of the cove and back and then sat by the river drinking from my flask of soup to await the bus's return. Can't remember what bus models they had then (probably about 1974/5) but I can still remember the sound of the engine. Much more throaty than the Bristol VRs that were common on the Bradford to Skipton route.

Really sad to see them go.

Is it just me, or does anybody else think that the closure of Pennine Motors, is Political motivated. Only it seem strange that Mr Simpson, should of chosen Friday 16th May, as the last day of operation, a week before the European elections on Thursday 22nd May.

I think it's just you. Considering all the many issues (economy, migration, referenda etc), the loss of local bus services is hardly at the forefront of most peoples minds.

The political aspect is NYCCs slash and burn policy on local bus services

If there was any significance I'd have expected some commentary to accompany it.

One step entrance dart has been sold for preservation and is being collected tomorrow.

Ah that'll be this: https://www.flickr.com/photos/10110677@N07/14015884558/ Plaxton Pointer R717 YWC.

Me and a mate of mine were getting photo's of all the destinations on the blind plus the route numbers. It was set to blank so to help preserve the blinds life, I'm sure the person who has purchased it didn't want a half faded blind.

This is very sad and has come at the wrong time as North Yorkshire clearly are not in the mood to provide a subsidised alternative to the previous commercial services. The 580 was a key service from Skipton up into the dales and the replacement 58 seems pretty derisory.

Given that one of the factors in Pennine's demise was competition from Transdev on established Pennine routes to the south west of Skipton - and Transdev will benefit from the end of this competition - I feel that maybe Transdev ought to have some moral responsibility to provide alternatives to Pennine's other services. It surely wouldn't be too difficult to add a bus to the schedules of routes coming in from Burnley or Keighley to provide services to Settle, Malham and locally. It would get some local goodwill and they might find it even makes money!

Before de-regulation Pennine used to operate a hourly Skipton - Lancaster service via Settle, Ingleton, and Hornby. The Ingleton - Lancaster section was jointly operated with Ribble.

From a licensing viewpoint, the entire Skipton to Lancaster/Morecambe service was jointly operated by Ribble and Pennine. In practice, the majority of the journeys west of Ingleton were provided by Ribble, and almost all those east of Ingleton by Pennine.

When I was a seasonal conductor at Ribble's Lancaster depot in 1968, Ribble operated two return journeys per week over the Ingleton-Skipton section. They were both on Sundays, the 0948 ex-Lancaster (crew operated! - by Lancaster depot) and 1548 ex-Lancaster (by Ingleton depot - one-man, I think).

Shortly afterwards, I think the 0948 journey became operated by Ingleton depot.

Pennine ran five journeys per day over the Ingleton-Lancaster section, Mondays to Saturdays, and two on Sundays. Of the five M-S journeys, three were operated by Ingleton depot, and two by Skipton. The first journey of the day, c.0700 ex-Ingleton, ran through to Morecambe. I can't now remember whether it did so M-S, or just M-F. The two Sunday journeys were both provided by Skipton depot, the two Ingleton drivers having their one day a week off. At Ingleton, Ribble and Pennine both operated from the same building, which remains in Simpson ownership (the owners of 'Pennine') to this day.

The Skipton to Malham service was also licensed jointly to Ribble and Pennine, but I don't think Ribble actually operated on it.
