Hello there, I’ve just come back from a 6 month trip around Europe, feeling very cultured now. Anyway, this post is just to recommend the experience – HIGHLY! I know it’s the fashion for students to jet off to South America or Asia for their gap year but I really think we young ones are missing something right in front of our noses – Europe! It’s so much easier to plan, you can see a lot more because the travels so much cheaper (I got myself a British Rail Pass), you don’t have to work yourself into the ground for 9 months to be able to afford 3 months away from the rain and at least you’ve got a bit more of a chance for integrating with the culture…Anyway, just a thought. Anyone thinking of a short notice gap year, I’d say Europe all the way!

Cynthia, a quick question/suggestion for you....

Could you make use of the blog feature here to share your experiances around Europe?

Sadly we can't use BritPass, only an All Line Rover, which costs more than a BritPass, even thought we have to pay billions of pounds on taxes to run our rail system!

But I agree, passes are the best way of seeing the UK, and Europe!

Then the name is a bit ironic.

Indeed, but that how it is marketed and advertised to the overseas market, as a pass to be used on the British Railway System.

Tourism seems to be our only prominent industry that has for the time being a prominent future, (And I work in it!!), so we have to milk the cash cow as much as we can! :???:

The name isn't ironic at all.

It's a "BritRail" - a rail pass for Great Britain. Our 'local' equivalent is the All Line Riot sorry, Rover.

However, as a tradeoff, we can get the European railpasses, etc.

Erm - no.

Foreigners looking for the pass would want to find the pass easily, so "British Rail Pass" in Google would come up with Britrail.

The same applies for all the other countries with railpasses for foreigners, they can't use "theirs" in their own country.

Bit off topic, but does anybody have any idea about what sales of the All-Line Rover like? I wouldn't have thought too many would be sold, but I could be wrong. Also, how is the revenue split between the TOCs?

W14Fishbourne is probably the best one to answer that!

Tiny - probably less than 1,000 a year. The income is divvied up between the TOCs in the same proportions as their total fares income, so most TOCs get diddly-squat from the exercise.

Not really that surprised its priced so high as to be useless to most "normals" on a touring holiday. Seems to have limited appeal as a mileage game to the most hardened trainspotters and in a few cases where its cheaper than a couple of high priced peak tickets.

As an aside Fishbourne do you still have that dodgy steam heat relief valve under the footplate on your drivers side?

In germany, you can get a Bahncard 100 which lasts for a year and is valid on all DB trains and many cities' local transport.

It costs €3,500 in 2nd class & €5,900 in first class

Bargain

I know at least one 'crank' train manager who actually sells weekly ALRs to 'normal' business folk, as it is cheaper (and far more flexible) than the weekly season ticket on that route!
