Was he the one who, as a player, could strike a free kick with incredible force from long distances ?
I think so. He scored one for Holland against England after he should've been sent off and stopped England qualifieing cant remember if it was World cup of Euro's.

I might join you.

Despite the slight mishap against Honduras, it's entirely possible he'll tear Italy to shreds if given the chance.

Let him play like he does for Liverpool. Alas I think Hodgson may have the team playing like he had Liverpool playing.

Good game that really though we got tired at the end but Baines was given the runaround and also Rooney being out of posistion didnt help and neither did Gerrard either.. But some good stuff there from Wellbeck and Sterling - lets hope Woy can keep that up with a shuffle of people around

Lets hope he can accept that he can drop Rooney. Rooneys current form does not warrant Sturridge or Sterling being dropped and he is certainly sh*t out on the left when he has a sulk on. I would drop him purely for that corner he skied in to the crowd no doubt deliberately.

Oh, and Wellbeck should never start for England, he was p*ss poor for a mediocre United team last season.

Didn't think that Welbeck was too poor, but Rooney should be dropped probably. I've seen worse England performances that have won matches, so we were a little unlucky. Still all to play for, of course.

I'm not sure that Wellbeck not being too poor is a reason to keep him in the national team at the world cup.

Wellbeck gained a lot of possession in the Italy half, he's just slow when he has got the ball. I would drop Rooney without doubt, but the Fa think he's god so that won't happen.

Gerrard was struggling with the heat and definitely not up to the full game.

Our defence as expected was not great.

That's the power sponsors have over football.

In some countries certain players have to be picked for every game.

From what I have heard, Wellbeck ended up being used to supplement a weakness in the English full-back area, which considering the reported injury he suffered in training, was surely a task for a fully-fit player.

Which one of the "world-class" England strikers in the nominated squad would you then introduce as a replacement for Rooney.

In the immortal words of Kevin Keegan, "don't you just love it" when the nonsensical media hype that was epitomised by the Sun issuing printed matter to 22 million households sees their xenophobic "bubbles being pricked" once again. I still think in some forgotten back-room of a press office still resides a hack who, noting that the Wimbledon tournament is soon to be with us but somewhat out of touch with reality (similar to their "football pundits") and as we speak is preparing a banner headline..."Will Henman win it this year ?"....:D:D:D

In the 4-2-3-1 we played last night I would like to see

Lallana, Wellbeck, sterling
Sturridge

Despite the above comments I don't think Wellbeck was too bad.
From Rooney being put out of position suggests Roy prefers sturridge in that up front position.

Nothing like a good bit of handbags. Needless to say 5Live have to make a comparison to England  (in this case Beckham in 98)

On last night's non-performance I humbly suggest that Gerrard is 'rested' as he looked knackered after only 15 minutes.

(Puts on tin hat and awaits salvo from 'Gerrard Should be the first name on team sheet' brigade)

Ha ha. Nice try.

Is it me or has the standard of officiating been somewhat sub-par this world cup?

It is every world cup. If not sub par then at least very picky.

I agree with you on this point. Also Rooney is bound to look poor being out of place - he is an out and out striker and being shifted on the left is no good and neither is him running round like a blue ar*ed fly trying to win possession then taking pot shots from 25 yards. He isnt 16 still and he would do well to remember it.

I agree and I am a big supporter of him.

In tonight's France Honduras game we've seen the first technology awarded goal.

And Honduras are playing really dirty and constant foul play.

Rooney is indeed bound to look poor played out of position. He should be dropped as there are players in his position that are better than him on current form. Without an out of form Rooney playing out of position Sturridge Sterling and maybe even Wellbeck would have played better together.
