Any chance if seeing 58s on the mainline?

DB selling 60's, preserved 37's, 56's and 73's back on the mainline, any chance some of the better 58's will end up back in service?

Unless those on Mainland Europe (Spain and France) return and get sold, as the ones currently in the UK (excluding 58016 - which is preserved) are in a poor condition (having been used as spares donors by DBS).
I suppose if DB offer them for sale, and get the right price for them, then maybe so.

Sounds like 'playing trains' to me... ;)

MARK

Given that this is DCR / Bars / Advenza / FMR in another sort of guise that wouldn't surprise me at the slightest!

(even if you were being semi sarcastic!)

But given the state of some of the 58s and the spare 56s coming back into use I don't think we'll be seeing another 58 come onto the mainline again for a while.

I see a similar debate in this month's Railways Illustrated but do wonder why DBS would be prepared to sell 60's but not yet 58's

Surely because the 60s have something left in them to sell so to speak!?!?!

I would have thought that the few 58s in this country have basically no sale value other than scrap?

Is it DBS not being prepared to sell the 58s, or the fact that they're in that much of a state, they know it isn't worth it unless its to Booth's

I would imagine that every UK based 58 is beyond anything other than spares retrieval, but assuming DBS still own the locos in Europe and they are still serviceable and if they were no longer required, surely they would return some value to DBS if they were offered up for sale

A smallish batch of Super58s would surely be just as useful and worth the investment as anything like 56s

Would be lovely to see purely from an enthusiasts perspective but realistically I can't see it.

The only chance of seeing a 58 again is if France and Holland finish with them, which is highly unlikely for the foreseeable future, as unlike over here, they work well over there for some reason.

All those in France are stored (at Alizay?) and three of the ones in Spain (58025/027/050) are stored at Albacete. The rest in Spain, IIRC, were sold to the DBS arm Transfesa (I don't know how much use they see though).
Being someone who is quite young, I've never seen/heard a 58 running and probably never will

I know the feeling mate, they seem to have gone before their time too.

Never going to see something like this probably:
