Hello,

I'm booking my dad a (Saturday) day trip by train from London - Bournemouth. He holds:

Freedom Pass (valid all day within zones 1-6)
Senior Railcard

He needs a flexible ticket, not advances. I've found an off-peak day return fare of £33.55 from Waterloo – Bournemouth. I'm familiar with the concept of using the freedom pass within the London zones, and booking the origin station from a station in zone 6 (I regularly book him train tickets to Chippenham, and know to use West Drayton as the origin). However, I don't know which stations the Bournemouth trains pass through, or if they all use the same route. Can anyone advise me.

Thanks.

Surbiton is the appropriate station, last in zone 6, on the SWML.

I think you can get a 'boundary zone 6' to somewhere outside London ticket with a freedom pass - I am sure Mum (also a freedom pass holder) has done this. Although not sure you can book it online.

In which case I don't think you need to be on a train that stops at the boundary station. You might need to if you do the ticket split involving Surbiton.

I'd suggest waiting for someone more up to date than me to come along...

(ETA - you do mean 'Freedom Pass' as in one issued by London Councils, don't you? The concessionary bus passes issued by councils outside London don't generally cover train travel)

Yeah, it is the Freedom Pass that covers train travel. Because this counts as a season ticket the requirement for trains to stop at the split point doesn't apply. I've just checked fares from Surbiton (thanks swt passenger) and this actually saves about £6 on the fare. That brings some follow up questions.

There's a second passsenger travelling. He holds a Network Railcard. He may have a weekly travelcard valid on that day.

Does the weekly travelcard count as a season ticket, and allow him to use a Surbiton – Bournemouth ticket without worrying about the train stopping there? (See my point above)
If not, can anyone help me with the Boundary Zone 6 – Bournemouth off-peak day return fare (with Network Card)? He may be better off with this and a day travelcard (£5.90) anyway.

One to try is Brighton to Bournemouth via Clapham Junction. For Southampton instead of Bournemouth its about a third cheaper than the CJ to Southampton fare so I'd expect some savings for Bournemouth too.

Rumours in the special offers thread that South West Trains are doing one of their on-line sales - anywhere for £15 return, off-peak return. Details will apparently be on their website on Monday.

Might be worth checking out if the dates and times allow.

Some cracking tips here, thanks everybody. They plan to travel on the 26th of this month, which apparently is the first day of the £15 offer. I'll leave it till Monday to see if I can access that fare.

If the £15 fare does't work I've now checked, Brighton to Bournemouth via Clapham Junction
£26.25 Off Peak Day Return
£26.35 Anytime Day Return
£29.20 Off Peak Open Return.

Yes, just get the Off Peak Open Return and you can come back anytime off-peak within the following month.
