For what operational reasons does the train stop with the locomotive off the end of the platform? Signal visibility?
There is a water column at the end of the platform so the loco has to stop with the tender next to it. I wonder if the Appleby Heritage Centre was open that day? This photo was taken from the old goods loading dock which is now part of their site.

Which is a much better picture than any of the tresspassing <deleted> people would have got!

Actually that is a cracking picture.

Thanks 455driver. I can never understand these people who feel the need to stand so close to get pictures (especially if it involves trespass ), the further away you stand the better as it is nice to get some of the surroundings in to add a bit of context. If you can't get a "straight" (ie, front 3/4 view) without risking life and limb then look for alternatives like this, taken from the opposite platform

Looking at the original pictures the train was on the other line which has no water tower and locos are required to be filled using the pressure fillers and a road tanker. The train normally would draw up to the starter and pipes laid from the tanker to the loco. From the photos it looks like the front buffer beam is about level with the bottom of the platform ramp which is publicly accessible (the no unauthorized persons sign being at the bottom) but they are clearly still trespassing!
Last time I was in Appleby for a northbound there was someone there was a Network Rail gent there with a COSS armband on making sure people didn't go too far!

quite simple one this....I assume the police have the pictures, push for prosecutions, and then the drivers should just open their throttles and push through, if anyone gets hurt...tough luck...

Yeah I am sure the Police have more than enough spare Officers sat around eating doughnuts so they can go out and spends weeks looking for these perpetrators who have committed what is in effect a very small crime.
The train driver would be up in Court on manslaughter charges (they might even make a murder charge stick as he would haved moved the train forward knowing these idiots were in front of the train), the Railways would be in Court for failing in their duty of care to ensure the safety of their 'visitors' (no matter how stupid they are being), so yeah excellent idea!
