I think that's pretty poor. I understand maybe wanting to make the GatEx trains recognisable and stand out but it looks pretty horrible. The current livery is much smarter.

I wondered where all those orange trains in Glasgow had disappeared to.

I'll agree with the comments here. A poor effort to make the Gat Ex stand out.

Thanks,

Im going to be a little controversial and say that I dont actually mind it. It could look very punchy if they use very simple icons on the outside using white vinyls.

The current livery for the service has been in use since the introduction of the 460s under National Express and incidentally looks similar to that of their West Midland bus liveries.

In the meantime, I have quickly thrown together what the livery could have looked like on an early 377.

I'm not that keen on it.. I know Gatex is all very Red in colour.. Well red, cream and black.

It stands out I'll admit but it's garish.

I'm not at all bothered by the new livery, myself. It'd be nice to see at least one railway in the London area go red again after LUL stopped doing it. :)

On the other hand though: New 387s? What's wrong with the 442s, and what will become of them? (Back to SWT, I'd hope!) <D

I suggest you look at the many other threads that discuss the 442s. Please lets not turn this into a thread that regurgitates all the nonsensical fantasy options for the current GatEx units.

Back on topic, disappointed that the logo isn't being changed. More importantly, I'd like to see an image of the 'designed for airport customers' interior, especially after travelling on a rare 377 GatEx working the other week which was, erm, an experience.

I agree, that does seem to be the topic of many fiery discussions, we don't want a flamewar if we can avoid it :p

The old/current livery looks way better then the proposed one (though it might look even nicer if the red as curved and not a straight line

Have you been away? :D

Replacement of the 442s with a new fleet of airport spec trains was announced with the GTR franchise.

It's alright, but very bland - more like a ketchup sachet than anything. I'd prefer ert47's interpretation of the current livery, Electrostars look far too chunky in one colour.

;)
Upon seeing it the first that crossed my mind was "how did the Strathclyde PTE get their hands on it"? :D

One wonders when the order for these trains is actually going to be announced, would seem to be getting a bit tight for Bombardier to build them in the originally envisaged timescales, or is there going to be a change of plan by Dft?

Bombardier are fine at working to tight schedules aren't they?

At least on a 377 passengers can get off the train about 3 times faster than a 442.

I think the colour scheme looks nice, but whilst they continue to run Gatwick Expresses from Brighton - and they're as late as every other train - the concept of paying for a premium, on-time, reliable service is lost.

Dreadful colour scheme. If they want to stick some red (looks like dark orange to me) on there why not just replace the light & dark green on a 377 with similar tones of red but leave the main body as white still.

Ah, but you're forgetting that for a lot of the time, there are only about 3 passengers on any given 442 coach - perhaps even the whole train.

Apparently 6 are to be retained for the Eastbourne - London Bridge services, until 2018. Maybe even the London Bridge - Brighton (V/V) services too.

Surely it can take less than 3-4 years between order being placed and trains in service? Don't see any real reason why the lead time has to be so long? Or is the capacity of the manufacturing plant so low?

Part of the requirement for the franchise, as set out in the Invitiation to Tender, is to "maintain and, where practicable, enhance the “Gatwick Express” brand".

It's all been a bit of a merry-go-round really. Since NX lost the Gat Ex mini franchise to the orders of it being merged into Southern, it really rather lost it's identity then. And then the 442s were brought in - It might have worked if Southern brought in the 442s to displace a small batch of refurbished 377s to work the Gat Ex services. Since then, Gatwick Airport and others have been calling for a dedicated Gatwick Airport Express service again - Heathrow & Stansted's got one, so why couldn't Gatwick have theirs back again?...

Can't say I'm too keen on the livery either - Electrostars look chunky at the best of times, let alone placing them in one slab 'Tomato Sauce' livery. To be honest, I'm surprised we've not seen more from this, seeing as Govia / Go Ahead seem to love their branding exercises, especially on the Bus Side - See what is left of Go North Eastern for that!

Yeah I think an plane should be on it somewhere.. for the passengers you immediately associate it with an Airport.

Thought a bigger plane over the windows looked a bit better..

The actual full in service date for these trains is supposed to be the start of 2016 that doesn't give very long by anybody's standard.
