Does anyone know if there is an ON/OFF "switch" whereby you can stop the screen changing when you accidentally using the touchpad move the cursor in a certain way.

To say it is annoying is an understatement :p

ps a simple solution for a simpleton please

By choosing not to install Windows 8, he's doing a good job for his employers though :D

I use Win8.1 and find it OK. Not sure what you mean but the changing screen only seems to be when you send the cursor into the corners. That's a 'feature' of it so it is something you need to get used to.

So it can't be disabled ?

It's a feature that's part of Win8/8.1. No matter what side you go to it will bring something up, for example going to the bottom right will bring up the power options and so on. There isn't an on/off switch unfortunately, but thankfully in Windows 10 RC which I'm running on my laptop has that feature removed...

Where does one obtain that from - is it free ?

It is free to download, however it's still in Beta stage just now so a few things are still a bit iffy, just an example, Windows 10 RC doesn't like my graphics card or my built in Bluetooth on my laptop...

Well that counts me out, thanks anyway.

Are you using the "Metro" style?

You may prefer to switch back to the old Windows style. I personally use Classic Shell and find it excellent.

The only thing you cannot change is that when your cursor moves to the top right or bottom right corner a menu will be superimposed onto the screen along the right-hand edge of the screen, but it disappears if you move the cursor away from it.

That would be the Charm Bar :)

Chocolate teapot proves useful

Chocolatiers have managed to produce a chocolate teapot that held boiling water for two minutes to make a drinkable brew.

The York-based experts were challenged to prove the sarcastic phrase "as useful as a chocolate teapot" wrong.

The result was a hand-crafted, working receptacle made of dark chocolate containing 65% cocoa solids.

When put to the test the teapot survived, albeit pouring tea with a "hint of chocolate".

The hot water melted some of the chocolate inside the teapot but the viscous molten chocolate helped insulate the outside layer and the teapot did not leak, the team of scientists and engineers said.

John Costello of the Nestle Product Technology Centre, in York, said it took six weeks to develop the final teapot for the challenge.

The team initially experimented with balloons covered in chocolate to get a teapot shape and then cast a mould in silicone.

It was filled with chocolate, shaken to remove air bubbles, and the excess chocolate was poured off and the cast teapot allowed to dry. The process was repeated until the desired thickness of chocolate was achieved.

It took the team more than two hours to produce the myth-busting pot but the resulting cups of tea were overseen by Marty Jopson of the BBC's The One Show.

It is not known if tests are now to be conducted on the efficiency of the similarly-fabled chocolate fireguard.
(sorry, couldn't resist, I'll get my coat )

+1 for Classic Shell - couldn't use Win 8 for real work without it.....

Related to the original question, many modern touch pads will detect certain 'gestures' and trigger specific actions - might be worth looking into the touch pad settings and disabling features that you don't want.

Thanks for all your replies, it looks like I will have to grin and bear it :p

I have another laptop that has windows xp which is much easier to use. Unfortunately I can't download anything on it as it blocks any attempts via windows defender.:p

Then you need to change the settings on Windows Defender.

I'm not using my PC at the moment, but I'm sure there is a way of disabling the one which comes in from the left hand side, but there is no official way of disabling the ****ing charm bar. A right royal PITA for anyone using a touchpad. I'm always catching it when I'm trying to move the cursor quickly to the left.

There are supposedly ways of disabling it via the registry, but I tried one suggestion and it didn't work.

Much preferred windows 7.

Can you disable the edge-swipe gestures in mouse settings in Control Panel? On my laptop, it's here:

Almost certainly slightly different for different hardware though!

I find this negativity towards Windows 8 on the internet interesting. We are moving most of our Mac users to PCs and have already move all the win 7 users to 8.1 and the feedback has been mostly positive. People like the start menu when the realise they can customise it easily.

The main complaint we see is people struggling with the metro apps as they want/think they want to close them but can't easily work out how. Performance is great, and it is also easy to admin.

You need to know how to set it up right so it isn't annoying for users though (which was not really the case for Win 7)....but the same could be said for OSX.

I think it was Windows 8 causing the problem - there was no 'start' button. Hence it's reappearance in 8.1 Don't know for certain because I refuse to upgrade. Yet another 'great idea' from Microsoft, foisted upon people who generally hated it! Just like that "£$%^&* paperclip from years ago.

"It looks like your trying to type a letter...... " Does it really, thanks for that, now go away and let me get on with it!

So they are are on 8.1 and not 8 than, put some of them on 8 and see how they get on!

The Start Bar makes a proper welcome return on Windows 10, still the same principle layout but obviously it's had a refresh to conform to the current Windows...
