I applied for Thornaby and heard nowt back. From what i can glean on here we may have to wait months for a reply / no jobs up north due to DBS losing contracts / HR and contracts department don't communicate with each other / DBS advertise then realise they don't need anyone. Any or all of these might apply, it's a big mystery. ****-poor in my opinion but no doubt some expert will come along and inform me of the error of my ways and unsuitability to drive a train :D

With an attitude like that I reckon you'd fit in at about 95% of DBS depots

Hahahahaha. Well said pal. The bit about an expert hahaha. There are some proper arrogant pilloks. Ones with little tags at the end like "I am a real train driver not just a spotter or computer geek" hahaha. I'm sure your the same and come on here for constructive and positive advice. Not for some tit to tell you how inferior we are. Most people have been genuine and very helpful but yeh, some are so up their own arse it's laughable

Hi there, don't mean to impose on your discussion which is very interesting I must say. I would just like some advise please if anybody could message me that would be great. My name is Sammi and I'm a bus driver in manchester at the moment but have always dreamed of working on the railway. I am very interested in becoming a tram driver within the next few years but feel I lack knowledge in this industry. I am struggling to find any vacancies so I am guessing they come up not so often. I'm not sure exactly what I am asking but just any advise, tips, known opportunities thrown my way would be hugely appreciated. Anything at all small or large :) sammi x

I applied on the 18th June for Bristol, I have just had a reply today. Unsuccessful.....

Me too, applied for Bristol in June and had the dreaded email today. Being a retired Fire fighter I thought I had a chance with this one, particularly as they were keen to seek applications from ex fire service personnel. Makes you wonder how they can deem you to be unsuitable from such a basic application form.

What's that favourite phrase we use? Oh yeah - "The job's f#%ked!"

Bristol here too and just recieved the email.

Bit annoying I admit, but after the recent postings on here. I'm not surprised.

Onwards and upwards as they say. :)

Well...

Having applied for Hither Green in June, guess what the postman brought today? A letter inviting me to an assessment day- in mid-March!

From the look of the practice materials they sent me it's the exact same standard tests I've already passed with LOROL, so I rang them to see if I need to take them again, but they've broken up for the holidays it seems. I'll call back in the new year. Anyone know if they're likely to be happy with what I've already done?

Anyway, if you applied for Hither Green keep an eye out for any undelivered letters (it's a 1/2" thick A4 package so won't fit through all letterboxes). There is hope still! :D

Best of luck for you but I got am Email back late Nov from DBS HR that I was unsuccessful at this time ( from a previous email that said My details were being held!) and that my details were no longer going to be kept and I would need to reapply if required in the future. I take it that you never got this email in Nov.

Cheers PM.

Thankyou.
No the only email I ever got was to say my details had been received and they would be in touch soon... And this is the first correspondence I have had back.

Cheers pm.

Congrats fella. Which depots did you apply for?

Thankyou pal. :)
I applied for Leicester and Crewe.
Not entirely sure which one they have opted for me but I don't care if I'm honest, I would travel any part of the country for this career.

Indeed purely out of complete doubt that I would be picked if I'm honest.
I must try to be more optimistic in future! Hahahaha

Nice one.

I applied in June for Doncaster, Heally Mills, Rotherham & Thornaby. Received no e-mails informing me of my progress, except when I let them know of changes (like work and that I have passed the assessments and multimodal interview for another operator in June & August), and I received replies saying that I was still progressing through the recruitment process.

So fingers crossed :)

I.m still waiting,
for some of us the waiting game still continues.
I'm under the assumption that good things come to those who wait....

I had an interview for Peak Forest back in April/May and missed out but got a call a few days before Christmas asking me back for another interview next week. Don't know if I still want to now though as it means a pretty substantial pay cut for an undetermined amount of time (I've heard of drivers still being on training wage after a year) when I could earn almost as much with what I'm doing currently

Looks like he never researched the actual job and salary.Makes you wonder why,as there are others out there who would jump at the chance.

He did research it, but if you read my post you'd see the job I applied for originally was from the start of last year when it would have been a better time for me

I wasn't in the process of buying a house then so I could have managed on the lower wage whilst training.

It's a difficult situation and only you can really answer your questions - dropping from (say) £45K to low £20K's would be a big hit for singletons desperate to get in the seat and prepared to race to the bottom to achieve it - not so simple for a family man with commitments.

Ignore the rather snide comments and sit with a pen and paper (or whatever app on whatever tablet ;)) and realistically work out the figures.
Figure on 12-18 months before attaining top wage (and don't rely on overtime to fill any gaps!) - naturally, a large depot with long and complex core routes means longer before 'passing out' compared to a small one-route, one customer operation.

And thank DRI agreements over the last decade or so for 'training wages' - this is one of the reasons current drivers earn so much - reap rewards to the detriment of those joining the grade in the future.

Best of luck with it and it's worth remembering that it's not just the salary that is attractive - annual leave, a 35 hour working week and (relatively) good pension all add up.

Short term pain for long term gain.

Ignore the simple comments from some of the desperate replies you have had!
Real world its tough our TOC has guys that have been on training course for 18 months or so and living on credit cards!!! :|

However it's a cracking career 4 days a week 35 hours and overtime available plus a final salary pension. DB will be on around 50k in 2 years basic..

Can you change mortgage to interest only etc etc

Hi I have received a letter from DBS confirming my assessment day this month, I am just wondering if you could let me know what to expect from the day? And what you believe to be the harder tests? Any help would be much appreciated.

What depot did you apply for? Personally I found the structured interview to be the most difficult. Plenty of stuff on here to help you with that.
