Anyone have any recommendations for Paris?

Yes, the Timhotel chain. Never had a problem with them and the prices are reasonable.

Somewhere further up this thread, look for the photo I posted of the view from one of their places... ;)

Burnley - The most awful place ever. Just horrible. Pulled out the sofa bed for one of the kids and found fag ends in a saucer. Blood on the sheets. Disgusting!

If you ever stay in Burnley I recommend either The Talbot Hotel pub. Although they don't do food they usually have about half a dozen well kept Ales on and often have rock bands on at weekends and its only a five minute walk into town where I usually have a breakfast at The Bott Inn.

Or there is the Omerod Guest House which is very nice

Easy, last week when I did my two days in Cardiff I stayed in The Mount Sorrel Hotel in Barry and the main problem was the bed.

The mattress was lumpy as you could feel the springs through the cloth and the pillows was wafer thin. I was in bed for 11:30pm but was up for 5am as the bed was too uncomfortable. It was on B&B but come 7am I just wanted out and start my second day of haulage. Did put a dampener for the first few hours of the day but I soon got over it as new haulage came after new haulage.

Okay, so it only cost £27 for the night B&B, but I have stayed in YHA's before now for a lot less and had a more comfortable sleep.

I might be doing the hotel a disservice as it might have been just that one room, but that one room has put me off going there again and also from recommending it to friends.

As to the best the Ibis hotel at Wembley.Rooms were clean and tidy, bed comfortable. It did what is said on the tin and it was only a 150 metre walk to the train station where there was plenty of haulage bashing of 165/168's to be had and only a 10 minute journey into London.

I know one hotel which will probably never see my custom if I need a hotel in the Blackpool area is the Broadway Hotel who charge you £100 if you leave a bad review.

And looking at Trip Advisor, seems to give Faulty Towers a run for it's money

Now that is a real lesson in how not to handle things. Had they not made this "fine" very few people would have ever seen the review; now the entire World knows to avoid the place...

I've never heard of such a thing before, but I must make sure I avoid that place then!

Bringing the mood back up a bit, I can recommend quite highly Hotel Dialog, Skarholmen, Stockholm. Nice and quiet area, only a 10 minute bus ride from Skarholmen Metro station and a 23 minute trip to central Stockholm from Skarholmen. Very friendly staff, excellent continental breakfast (with some of the finest orange juice I've ever had anywhere!), good size rooms, decent free WiFi, very powerful shower and rather comfortable beds, even though they don't look like they'll be comfortable when you first see them.

I believe it was very well priced too, not got the price to hand but we didn't pay a lot of money (around £130 for 3 nights I think) for what we got. Not got any photos, because we both forgot to take any, but it's definitely a hotel I'm using again when I return to Stockholm in 2015. My TripAdvisor review is not done yet, I still have a lot of bookwork to get through but going to try and get cracking with that on my commute to work tomorrow.

Haymarket Travelodge, rather good location (I was at the rear of the building and heard nothing), less than 5 minutes walk from the train station (probably would have been less if it wasn't for silly traffic lights which refused to change). Although the usual travelodge mattress and all-in-one duvet (I prefer layers), but nothing you can do about that. Unusual in that it was a single bed with a proper key.

So good I'm considering booking it again for 2 nights in April-time as a base for a 3-day central Scotland bash.

My sister was staying at The Station Hotel in Gloucester this week. Was being the key word, as her room had bed bugs so she got a refund and managed to find a Travelodge for a reasonable rate at the last minute surprisingly. Don't think she's done a TripAdvisor review yet, but on her behalf I'm suggesting an avoidance of it here.

This week (which starts shortly) she's got a B+B down that way apparently, shall feed back details when I can. I really need to do my review on TripAdvisor for my last hotel in Stockholm!

I'm a little surprised, it does actually seem quite smart, from the outside at least. It is in Gloucester though.....:lol:

2 additional Premier Inns to the list of stayed in

Stockport Central, a good 10 minute walk from the railway station up and down some hills, bit of noise in the mornings with the airplanes from the airport, but a good location to stay on a Thursday evening

Wigan, firstly I'm guessing it is new that the postcode doesn't work on Google Maps (seemed to suggest it was in a field 3 miles away), another nice hotel, 5-10 minutes away (depending on traffic lights), can't fault either to be honest (apart from the beds)

The Wigan Central Premier Inn only opened this year, but we've now included it in our listings. The Premier Inn Stockport Central is twenty minutes normal walking from Stockport station so we haven't listed it. We've listed the Red Bull pub which is much nearer and well-reviewed.

Even Google Maps is only saying 11 minutes to Stockport Central from the station, and that is with Google walking speed.

Premier Inns told us 20 minutes walk and they show one mile on their website. Google Maps show 13 minutes walk or 11 minutes by bus/walk.

As you have done it yourself we are happy to include it in our listings, if you think you can walk it with luggage in less than 15 minutes.

I'm Stockport born& bred, and would confirm you could comfortably walk from the Railway Station to the above hotel in less than 15mins. That includes the wait to cross the busy A6 road enroute, it is also less than a mile between the two.

Kite159 has already commented on Charing Cross Guest House in Glasgow (indeed, it was on his recommendation I booked there!), but having stayed there last weekend I can also recommend it. Not far from Charing Cross station, less than 8 minutes including the walk up a very steep hill. Not the most modern of places, but the room was very clean and tidy, beds comfortable enough for a good sleep, tea/coffee in the room too.

Decent enough TV size for the room, but the bathroom was rather small. Just big enough for one average size person, not much space around at all though. Corridors are also fairly narrow and in need of refurbishment, and I saw no lift available.

Breakfast was properly cooked, but not enough of the stuff I like (as I don't eat mushrooms, eggs or tomatoes), no idea what the flat thing was but it tasted a bit like potatoes. It's also Tchibo coffee, which I'm not a fan of to be honest. Nice orange juice though. Only other thing to mention would be the toaster not browning my toast enough for my liking!

For the rate I paid (£31.50 for a Sunday night), I couldn't complain though and despite the niggles mentioned above I'm going back there in 2015 :)

Same here, although I went for the cheaper option of shared toilets/bathroom. Little Tesco Express nearby as well, I will probably be heading back there in 2015 as it is a good base for Glasgow based unit bashing.

No need to worry about losing your room key when out bashing as they like to have it handed in when you go out (they did in May, so might have changed?)

I'm not sure regarding keys, after I got there I didn't leave the building until the morning. Just as well as I didn't have a front door key!

I don't do shared bathrooms, just no need. Tried it when I did the Rollason Wood Hotel in Birmingham a few months ago, just don't like it. I've also done shared bathrooms in hostels in years gone by, no thanks!

No, just I like the privacy of my own facilities to use whenever I need to use them during my stay. I'd rather spend extra money than stay somewhere with shared bathrooms!

A Youth Hostel would be out of the question then :p:p

I'm the same in 1st Class - if I don't get a "4" to myself I'm upset.

I have to say Im divided on the shared bathroom thing - if kept clean and respected by there users then its no biggy - theres a guesthouse I use in Blackpool where this is the case. In most cases though I do prefer my own one.

For anyone interested the guesthouse in question is

In response to Techniquest, the Rollason Wood does offer ensuites also - I have been using it for years in this way and would urge you to give it another go.↲

I did shared bathrooms at University, and that was enough to put me off for life. Unfortunately, there are too many people who don't respect others when it comes to such facilities. So like Techniquest I'd rather pay more and stay somewhere that offers private bathrooms.

I used to ALWAYS do overnight trains unless it was absolutely necessary.

So when I travelled to Ireland, I was forced to stay in B&B's. Most were rather nice, but I do remember staying in an absolute hovel in Limerick one night - it felt that dirty I slept in my clothes and refused to have a shower. It didn't have a window in the bedroom, I didn't hang around for breakfast either. That was back in 1992, so can't remember what the place was called, unfortunately.

Give me an empty compartment any day of the week :)

I will one day! Just have so many places to visit I have no reason to stay in Birmingham again any time soon!
