A friend of mine is in a very lucky position, he has been offered trainee train driver with both Freightliner and DBS.

Freightliner have told him a date and depot, where as DBS have told him its onto a talent pool and should be offered a position within the year.

He asked me for my opinion on which company would be best but I really don't know, I work on the railways but as a signaller so don't want to give any false ideas to him.

Can any drivers or anyone in the know give some advise or pro's/con's

Thanks

Yeah, I'd advise him to be wary of 'talent pools' regardless of which company is offering them.

A family member of mine was placed into a talent pool by a well known TOC. Despite passing all his tests, he is still to hear back from them. Nearly 18 months have passed now.....

By the sounds of it he's been offered one, DBS ain't happening till its happening!

FL pro = been offered a job with a date and depot
DB con = haven't!

Talent pool could be a massive risk!

is it FLIM or FLHH?

I would defo go for the offered job without a doubt. I have applied for both, aswell as Scotrail and Northernrail and am still to hear from DBS, Scotrail and Northern. And waiting to see if I have been successful for the March intake with FLHH.

regards,
Darryl

I'd thought this was an easy and obvious answer - take the one that has offered you a date and a depot. Who on earth would pass it by to sit on their hands in a talent pool????

He has only been offered one job! Take it. Talent pool not a job offer

Without wishing to sound rude here, if your friend turns down the job to sit in a talent pool for heaven knows how long, then surely you would have to question his appetite for the job full stop.

FLI- fairly fixed roster mainly Monday to Friday (how many intermodal trains run on a weekend) so easy to plan family/social life around it.
DBS- no actual guarantee of a job yet, if one is offered then no fixed roster and at their beckon call most of the time, loads of nights and weekend work.

Do I need to say anymore!

Thank u gentlemen for your responses.

I think the thing that worries him the most is that he live just outside of leicester (western park area for anyone who knows leicester) so Lawley street is quite some drive in comparison to leicester depot.

He also tells me he has to sign a 5 year agreement to stay, I think he is worried if he finds the travelling to much and wants/needs to quit then how will he buy himself out of the contract (I guess these things aren't cheap)

I shall certainly pass on the comments though, so thank you!.

Just to clarify - of course they have a roster!

Fixed rest days, a/l and booked WTT turns.

Granted, there is scope for 'movement' but this is by agreement in advance on most occasions and these are finite.
Don't go thinking they're another 'here today, gone tomorrow' outfit where anything goes.

Personally, the OP's mate would be mad to decline FLiM to sit and wait for DBS to make up their minds - DBS pay more but FLiM have the terms & conditions that drivers from other operators would die for (until they sold them during restructuring deals ;)).

Unless the DB depot is on the door and FLiM requires a 350 mile relocation it's a simple decision.

Oh, and as far as I know only one of the operators has gone through a recent cull of staff and redundancies / forced relocations...
