Afternoon all.

Just wanted some advice for the experienced people on here!

I am planning a trip in Norway with a friend (non railway staff) from Bergen to Oslo on the sleeper service.

I applying for my FIP card in a few months and wanted to know what discounts i got on this service. I know I have to pay the sleeper compartment supplement which isn't an issue.

Regards

Geordierpi

In general you will get free travel (4x 2 days) if you apply for a free international coupon (1 per calendar year). Over and above that you will get 50% discount on standard fares with your FIP/IRRC card. You pay the public rate for seat & sleeper reservations.

You miss most of the great scenery using sleepers.

I did:
Oslo-Flam-Bergen (1 day)
Bergen-Haugesund-Stavanger (Flagrutten boat) (1 day)
Stavanger-Oslo (1 day)
Oslo-Aandalsnes-Aalesund (1 day)
Aalesund-Aandalsnes-Trondheim (1 day)
Trondheim-Bodo (1 day)
Bodo-Narvik (bus) (1 day)
Narvik-Kiruna-Narvik (1 day) Ofotenbahn train, not in FIP
Narvik-Tromso (bus) (1 day)
Tromso-Nordkapp (bus) (1 day)

11 nights in hotels, no trains beyond 7pm. :)

Due north, and three to the left.
You need a ticket from Bergen to Oslo plus sleeper reservation.

Your FIP card will get you 50% of the public fare between Bergen and Oslo
Your FIP Coupons will get you between Bergen and Oslo for free.

The sleeper reservation is in addition to this and is not coverd by FIP. At the moment it is currently 900 kroner per compartment, not berth, and there are two berths per compartment.

With 900k being around £80 it makes a sleeper cheeper than most hotels in Norway.

Great trip that. Norway is simply superb so it would be a shame to miss any of the scenery. If finance isn't too tight try the Hurtigruten coastal ships as well. Not cheap (by any means!) but worth saving for.
