Shropshire Star says so

http://www.shropshirestar.com/news/...er-figures-on-shropshire-to-london-rail-link/
It took years of campaigning and a petition signed by thousands of residents and community leaders to get the Shrewsbury to London Euston rail service reinstated.

Rail bosses said today that the service was proving to be a "success" so far, but said it was too soon to give detailed figures.

Richard Stanton of Virgin Trains, said: "Valentine's Day just happens to be the new service's two month anniversary. It is still early days but the signs are positive."

Hundreds have already flocked to the capital since The Wrekin Giant, as named by Shropshire Star reader Toni Williams, made the inaugural journey at 3.24pm on Sunday, December 14.

It was unfortunate timing for the press release. On the same day the northbound afternoon train was pined at New Street 46 late (after diverting via Nuneaton) and the southbound return service was caped between Salop and New Street.

("Pine": terminate short of destination; "cape": cancel)

To me seems more like they were marking the anniversary of the start of the service for some extra publicity, newspaper asks how the loadings are and they give a non answer 'we are happy with them' response.

People seem to want to be awkward by calling it Salop
(inb4 IT'S PROPER ENGLISH!!! I HATE AMERICANISMS!!!)

There are some people who think it is the other way round (ie Salop right and Shropshire wrong).
The county was officially Salop for a period in recent times.
Floreat Salopia is the town's motto.
It's from the Norman French apparently.

Crewe has had a Salop Goods Junction signal box for more than a century.

GWR County Class 1026 was named County of Salop, not County of Shropshire. I guess they save a bit of brass (literally) that way.

Salop can be used in place of both Shrewsbury and Shropshire. Salop is simply an old term, not often used today but still correct.

Salope in French is a swear word it is translated to slut, slag, hooker etc. I think this is why it was changed years ago

I doubt it very much if you translate it unless they had ideas on the people of Shropshire

Salop = Shropshire. Not entirely sure why.

As above :)

There has been debate for as long as I can remember (I'm long in the tooth now) how to pronounce Shrewsbury.
Some say:-
Is it as in "SHROVE Tuesday" or as in "Taming of the SHREW"

Wilkipedia quotes both pronounciations, either or.

I always say Shro,:)

While in the County, Lemster, some say LEOminister in full.

As for the loadings, well VT have to be upbeat.

You learn something every day.

Unfortunately I was deep inside Salop last Friday night.

I feel dirty.

Isn't the correct answer to that: "Yes, it's definitely one of those!"?

I go Shrewsbury, Shrove sounds wrong and incorrect to me. Although am originally from the Somerset so it could be why. Most in Shropshire at least in Bridgnorth, Highley say it as Shrove

Getting back to the topic at hand... :p

This is good news! Any chance that the Wrexham service can be rerouted to be an extension of this service, rather than the weird, circuitous route it currently takes?

In the time it takes the current VT service to reach Wrexham neither of the Shrewsbury services would have even reached Shrewsbury, so I'm not sure what the incentive would be for any party involved, aside from perhaps getting Gobowen on the map...

I didn't realise the lines were so slow - that makes sense.

Last year whilst staying in Shrewsbury my quickest train back to london was ATW to Crewe then non-stop Pendo.

Yes but you pay extra for via Trent Valley compared to via Birmingham.

Quite a premium. There are Route: Via Birmingham and Route: Via High Wycombe tickets which each offer better value than the very expensive Any Permitted which allows via Crewe - and also the fastest journeys changing at Wolverhampton and Stafford. I think most people ignore the ATW & LM and Warminster-Salisbury routed tickets for being rather too slow.

It's skewed somewhat by the existence of trains with further destinations (Manchester and Liverpool respectively) that are non-stop all the way from Euston to Crewe and Stafford. Having said that the Wrexham service does stop to pick up at MK and then again at Nuneaton! :p

The Shrewsbury service would be better off continuing to Chester that way a more frequent service could be offered to/from London and aswell and Chester will still keep its hourly service - 1 train at 2 hourly intervals via Crewe, the other via Shrewsbury/Telford and Birmingham.

It would take an age to get from London to Chester via Birmingham and Gobowen!
