The copyright date at the end of the programme is MMXIV, which of course is 2014. I am sure I saw this programme last year, so much of it seemed very, very familiar.
Given that much of it was BTF archive film that's hardly surprising.

It may have been completed in 2014 but it was first released on 24 February 2015 according to IMDb

A very enjoyable programme. An ideal example of the sort of programme that would never see the light of day should we ever be daft enough to scrap the licence fee.

What? Yes. Admitting that a nationalised industry could produce something worthwhile?

There were a couple of colour film clips shot 'over the shoulder' in the cab of an early Class 86/AL6, where you could see both the view and the driver's control movements. Does anyone know the name of the whole film? It could have been a training film even? Since I love the early A.C. Electric Locos with their relatively complicated driving method, it would be of interest to me to see the whole film.

Good programme - even if most of the old footage had been seen by one before !
OH! - how tha misses 'good old B R'...
The Diesel Locomotive variety and particularly the hauled passenger trains using decent wood panelled Mark Two carriages.
Not forgetting the horrible old Mark One carriages and the, as often as not, horrible, indolent, scruffy staff !

If I recall all large firms like Shell etc had their own film units, many of these films were shown when BBC2 went colour, they were transmitted in the morning and afternoon for installers,British Transport film unit used professionals, thats why the films were so good.

I also recall in LMS days seeing a film of four steam trains between Llandudno Junction and Colwyn Bay all heading towards Colwyn on all four tracks one early Sunday morning, the film was a good advert for LMS, last saw it about ten years ago.

It clearly is from British Transport Films collection, but many were fleeting shots in longer films, so you've got a bit of research to do. Concentrate on the 'sixties.

List of BTF films here http://www.imdb.com/company/co0103266/

They are in the care of the British Film Institute but many are sold on DVD and many have been pirated on to Youtube

There is a 10 minute film from 1966 called "Train Driver" which informs "train crew about the correct preparation, operation and disposal for operating . . . new 25KV . . . locomotives"

It's here on Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EYosvbO3A8w

When they were using the Old Dalby test track in the early 70s, I got quite a few hours over time in when they were constructing the foam type buffer stops, where you saw the wagon career into it.
There was one near to Melton jct and one near to Edwalton, quite near to the Edwalton hotel as it happens. :)

Like this by the LMS you mean? :D https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K9rSzitGZZg

However by "something worthwhile" I was meaning world-leading railway technology <(

And again at 1am (for those who only started watching half way through and will record the repeat showing!)
