Reminds me of another thread on here for some reason

On this day 4th April 50 years ago, The Stapleford railway hosted the Avengers as part of a plot based around the railway. It was called "Gravediggers"

Gosh - is it 50 years?

That episode made quite an impression on a 16-year old boy. :D

Just the right time to fire my enthusiasm for miniature railways.

Nice to see this post today, having so many happy memories of the SMR.

A re-enactment would have been fun, assuming there was a volunteer willing to take a dip in the lake! ??????

I remember seeing the episode. Stapleford was frequent place to visit for me over the years. I remember when it used to run from the station by the church - the land now part of the country hotel complex. The station near the main house with its traverser and the ocean liners on the lake: SS Northern Star, SS Southern Cross.

And of course the points and bay platform aren't there to divert the train at the last moment.
I should've remembered that seeing as their removal was one of the first close season jobs I helped with back in about 1977/78!

Yep just a straight run through now
You will have to give us a visit if you get a chance

Regarding Lord Harborough, there was also an attempt in the 1840s to bring the Syston and Peterborough railway around the South West of the park under Cuckoo hill rather than North East
Had that been successful, it would have been a different view on the train today including a short tunnel. Unfortunately, the tunnel collapsed due to its shallow depth taking part of Lord Harborough Cuckoo hill fox covert with it, and so the route was abandoned leading to the battles and the Saxby curve.
The tunnel abutments are still there I am led to believe if you know where although the tunnel is partly infilled. There is a rumour that part of the tunnel is still there unfilled under the hill. One of the old barns appearing to have capped shaft in the floor which wind noise can be heard from on certain days
