Must be strange being a guard at Reading with so much DOO around only Reading to Gatwick Marlow and Basingstoke have guards. ..

Not electrifying the latter two might be good news for guards
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
Thanks from another thread do cotswold line guards perform full guard duties East of oxford on turbos

Also Henley has guards.

The guards east of Oxford probably don't perform guard duties.

No they don't, on arrival into Oxford, Train reverts to DOO(p), the guards usually then pass back to Reading, same in the other directin, join train at RDG, pass to Oxford then assume guard duties at Oxford.

Have the Westbury and Previously Castle Cary Turbos had guards? I am assuming so as there is no DOO down that way?

I wondered that. When i was at Westbury watching the Turbos, the dispatcher was always showing the bat to the guard at the back, which then the guard acknowledges and gets back on in the rear cab. The drivers never looked out the window so I assume the guard gave the RA. Probably was DOO at Pewsey etc though

Proposal for the new FGW IEP to have the driver being fully responsible for the doors and for the train to run driver only if no TM available

Interesting times

Concerning times too, as presumably local services may follow the same path?

I don't know about the line to Bedwyn, but at least some of the branch lines don't have ticket facilities at the stations and so would need to retain some sort of staffing

In other words, the guard would not be an essential safety-critical member of the train-crew, but an optional extra.

We do live in interesting times...

I imagine Driver only operated (DOO) on IEP will only happen in the areas DOO is currently allowed. So Cotswolds east of Oxford, and then everything else West of Didcot Parkway/Bedwyn.

The Train Manager (TM) could still be on board until London Paddington (PAD), but if running late, the TM can be dropped off at Reading (RDG), take their Person Needs Break (PNB), then take up their original working from Reading back West. This currently happens when the brown stuff hits the spinny thing with drivers, but with London Trent Valley (LTV) HST trained drivers covering to PAD and back to RDG.

No. They're going 100% DOO. Train managers to be diagrammed to every service. However if there isn't one available then they will run without. There is nothing preventing them not hiring enough to cover services and eventually doing what they do with Berwyn services and have nobody on there unless they feel like it. This is unacceptable, especially for a customer focuessed intercity service. We need a Scotrail style arrangement or something. We need to ensure staff are always available as much is possible. This isn't good enough. For staff nor customers.

Did the slammers the 360s replaced on First Great Eastern ten years ago or so have guards?

To the best of my knowledge, yes. A friend of mine has copied what appears to be a letter detaling things, dated the 2nd of April 2015. I'm sure the unions will be onto this in due course. Not received mine yet though.

Letter sent out with two main proposals

Driver to have sole responsibility for doors
Train to run as DOO if no TM immediately available

Interestingly no mention of 'DOO' explicitly

Voluntary redundancy package offered to those who want it only if no strike

no compulsory redundancies

Existing TM conditions being kept dependant on above adhered to

All IEP trains will be diagramed to have a Train Manager, but Drivers doing the doors and they can run without a Train Manager if required. The letter does not use the word "Guard".

A voluntary redundancy package is being offered conditional to the major role changes being introduced without industrial action...

The key could be in the new avantix system they are creating. Maybe it's a phablet system that where they collect the order and payment (together with coach and seat number) send it to the kitchen using the on train WiFi. Order gets cooked immediately and sent out. One to collect orders. One to serve?

I know it's slightly off topic, but how will this affect 'local' service like portsmouth - Cardiff in years to come? The trains due to replace the 158's are already DOO capable.
