Not one particular hotel or B&B but I can thoroughly recommend a place as a whole.

Plockton, which is 2 stops from the end of the Inverness-Kyle line, which was recently voted the 2nd most scenic village in the UK. You get a brilliant view of Plockton as you snake around Loch Carron before arriving at the station.

There is actually budget accomdation/bunkhouse on the actual platform itself, but if you want a bit more comfort then there are a number of hotels and B&B's in the village itself.

The village centre is a good 10-15 minute walk from the station though, but each time I have stayed there I have informed the place I was staying at that I would be arriving by train and they have picked me up at the station.

The village itself is stunning and some of the views will take your breath away. I usually stay at The Plockton Inn which is also an award winning seafood restaurant but there is also The Plockton Hotel (an award winning seafood restaurant too) and well as several B&B's. There is also The Plockton Shores restaurant where Michael Portillo ate on his train journeys programme.

So, if anyone is doing the Inverness to Kyle line and needs an overnight stop then Plockton is the place to stay I reckon as there isn't really much actually at Kyle.

http://www.plockton.com/

For those of you who aren't already aware, Plockton was Lochdubh in Hamish Macbeth.

I recently stayed at the Travelodge in Sunderland. Very good, only 29 quid and there's a 'spoons next door. Less than 10 mins from the main station and the bus station interchange station. Also stayed at Premier Inn High Fishergate, Doncaster again. Very convenient for the station and I got it for 35 quid. The gap between PI and TL seems to be narrowing by my recent experiences. TL are more generous with the tea/coffee provision too.

There are two Travelodges in Sunderland, both a similar distance from the station.

Seeing as Blindtraveller has recommended the Rollason Wood hotel in Birmingham, I'm booked in there at the start of August, a Saturday night for £27, can't complain hopefully :)

For central London, the cheap options are terrifying and the nice looking ones £300 a night or more.

If you need to stay near KX/St.P for a morning train I can recommend the Travelodge. Seems to be about £75 per night, 24 hour reception and typical rooms.

Last week I spent a night in the Royal Station Hotel in Newcastle; excellent food and a comfortable room. Plus the view... Not bad for about £60 B&B for a short notice booking...

I hope you find it to your liking. It is basic but really friendly with a smashing breaky and a bar :) As I say dont expect luxury but, for me anyway quite acceptable for what it is. In turn Im trying to decide which 1 of your London B and Bs to book. Which would you have said was nearer to the tube?

I had often wondered about this one, given how hit or miss Newcastle accom can be so glad to know its decent and the foods good as always found getting a decent meal for a good price round that way quite tough!

It's literally a 30 second walk from the railway station as well... :D

Out of the B&Bs, I have used the one closest to the tube is the one at Seven Sisters, the one I would probably avoid unless you are going up mid-week when there won't be a party in the next door pub.

One in Homerton area is quite good, not near the underground but close to the NLL (2 stops away from Stratford). Acton guesthouse not really close to the underground (although there are nightbuses which serve it, about a mile from North Acton)

Does anyone have any recommendations for an overnight stay in Inverness in August? Not too bothered about the quality providing its clean.

Firstly, (ref previous post) the Travelodge I stayed in in Sunderland was the one directly west of the station.

I've recently returned from another trip and stayed in several places.

Travelodge Sportscity, close to Ashburys station in Manchester, been uplifted, very nice, much cheaper than the ones in central Manchester. But, still a dearth of power sockets here, couldn't charge my laptop and phone at the same time.

Travelodge Bradford Central, looks pretty new, good price again and a stone's throw from Forster Square. Very handy for the KWVR.

In Leeds I stayed in the Cosmopolitan on Lower Briggate, 5 mins from the station and for a Sat night was cheaper than I could get from TL or PI in the Leeds area. Very nice with lots of little extras like free wifi, biscuits, shower caps (not that I need one) shampoo (ditto).

Edinburgh, back to Travelodge, Princes St. Actually on a little alleyway just behind Princes St and not particularly easy to find. Bigger than average room otherwise pretty standard Travelodge.

Glasgow Travelodge, the one on Hill Street. Once you know where you're going, it's about a 10-15 min walk from Queen St, slightly more from Central. Back to normal size room but otherwise the usual good standard that I expect. One slight oddity - no BBC2 on the box.

Premier Inn Elgin...walkable from City Centre (20 min or Bus)

Brewers Fayre restaurant next door plus a Macdonald's close by.

Had £22 Meal Deal which includes 2 courses and a drink in the Evening plus Full Breakfast in the Morning. (Served at Brewers)

Bonus at this PI Full Sky TV !!!

Premier Inn Inverness East ... a fair way out need a Car or Taxi.

Again A Brewers Fayre next door - better food than Elgin one despite being the same chain.

The difference in standard between Premier Inn and Travelodge is quite pronounced now - even comparing the refurbished TL , PI is far superior. If you can book early and get a £30-£40 room it is well worth it . Consider adding the meal deal.

For Inverness I would say the central PI, the one by the river, is better than either of the above.

Provisionally booked into the The Acorn Guest House in Sunderland for a Saturday night in September. Any opinions on it?

Seems to be around half a mile away from Park Lane Metro Station, bit longer from Sunderland station itself.

As for Premier V TL, Premier way ahead these days!

Have you tried The Inverness West one ? - I've never been to that one. It's on the A82 heading out of the City (about 3 miles out). It is part of a Beefeater Restaurant and looks like a conversion rather than purpose built.

There were some minor works going on at Inverness East but nothing to invasive that I saw.

Can recommend the Waverley in Inverness, two minute walk from the station, breakfast included and was dead cheap too, about £40 a night IIRC.

I can't remember the name of the guest house I stayed in at Inverness due to my originally booked one having "no records" of my booking

It was down on Ardross Street with many other guest houses.

Thank you, looks good.

Going to book one of the aforementioned when I get paid.

Thanks everyone for the reviews/recommendations.

I will of course review once I've done my trip.

Premier Inn, Glasgow Buchanan Gardens; superb accommodation, and a snip at £30 a night.
Fairfield Villa, Inverness; Lovely B&B, service with a smile.
Midland Hotel, Appleby; Right next to station, and Rail enthusiasts welcome. However, also a pub so you may be subject to 1am shouting matches.

When I was last at Bristol Parkway, there was very little around, let alone hotels or B and Bs! DanTrainMan185 of this forum travels over there regularly so he will know far better than me, after all my last frequent visits were 5 years ago!

Swindon has a hotel literally across the road from the station entrance. Worth a look, should be called The Railway Hotel (surprisingly enough!) and was around 55 notes when I last looked. Depending which day of the week it is and all that, it may be cheaper for your stay.

Even Booking.com is failing to give anything closer than a Holiday Inn 0.6 miles away.

More choice around Temple Meads if you can get yourself down towards the city centre

I'm considering a trip to London later in the year to ride on the Liverpool Street-Shenfield section of Crossrail and I was just wondering if anybody could recommend somewhere to stay in Central London?

Thanks in advance

While certainly not a bashing trip, I can't fault the Westminster Hotel just a couple of minutes walk from Chester station. The hotel is part of the Best Western chain and booking at short notice we got a room for two nights for £128 and were upgraded to an Executive Room on arrival. Breakfast was not included in that rate, but didn't look anything special for the £14.30 they wanted per person, per day.

The room was nice, the bed comfy and everything was nice and clean. The tea and coffee making facilities were also fairly generous. It's about 10 minutes walk into Chester city centre, but there are a few (mainly Indian and Thai) restaurants close by, as well as a pub on the corner by the station.

Planning a Highland rover trip in August & using EC rewards. on the return journey.
Has anyone tried the Hotel at Rannoch or the best western at Crianlarich ?
Though I would need to check my timings for Rannoch as It would be Saturday night so I think the next train is 12:42 on Sunday lunchtime! also I suspect the midges would be out in force if I decided to go for a walk!

Also can anyone recommend anywhere on Orkney - I'm thinking of the Stromness hotel as it is close to the ferry.

I think the other night would be the premier inn by the river in Inverness which I have used a few times before.

It's a long time since I stayed on Orkney (in Kirkwall), but on the subject of the ferry have you considered using the John O'Groats Ferry to Burwick (and then the connecting bus to Kirkwall) - £16 for a single on the ferry, or £18 including the connecting bus, so not much different to a Scrabster-Stromness fare with the 20% discount you get from your Rover. The Jogferry is likely to be a happier crossing if it's breezy in the Pentland Firth.
