Iv often wondered about the A to Z. It comes up a lot when searching for accom but TA Reviews are mixed.
Not one particular hotel or B&B but I can thoroughly recommend a place as a whole.
Plockton, which is 2 stops from the end of the Inverness-Kyle line, which was recently voted the 2nd most scenic village in the UK. You get a brilliant view of Plockton as you snake around Loch Carron before arriving at the station.
There is actually budget accomdation/bunkhouse on the actual platform itself, but if you want a bit more comfort then there are a number of hotels and B&B's in the village itself.
The village centre is a good 10-15 minute walk from the station though, but each time I have stayed there I have informed the place I was staying at that I would be arriving by train and they have picked me up at the station.
The village itself is stunning and some of the views will take your breath away. I usually stay at The Plockton Inn which is also an award winning seafood restaurant but there is also The Plockton Hotel (an award winning seafood restaurant too) and well as several B&B's. There is also The Plockton Shores restaurant where Michael Portillo ate on his train journeys programme.
So, if anyone is doing the Inverness to Kyle line and needs an overnight stop then Plockton is the place to stay I reckon as there isn't really much actually at Kyle.

I recently stayed at the Travelodge in Sunderland. Very good, only 29 quid and there's a 'spoons next door. Less than 10 mins from the main station and the bus station interchange station.
Seeing as Blindtraveller has recommended the Rollason Wood hotel in Birmingham, I'm booked in there at the start of August, a Saturday night for £27, can't complain hopefully
Last week I spent a night in the Royal Station Hotel in Newcastle; excellent food and a comfortable room. Plus the view... Not bad for about £60 B&B for a short notice booking...
I had often wondered about this one, given how hit or miss Newcastle accom can be so glad to know its decent and the foods good as always found getting a decent meal for a good price round that way quite tough!
Does anyone have any recommendations for an overnight stay in Inverness in August? Not too bothered about the quality providing its clean.
The Kings Highway, a Wetherspoons Hotel is a good, reasonably priced option only a 5 minute walk from the train station.

Riverness is new as of a couple years ago and is indeed v good, I do like Inverness East though and I believe its under refurb at present.

Can recommend the Waverley in Inverness, two minute walk from the station, breakfast included and was dead cheap too, about £40 a night IIRC.

Also can anyone recommend anywhere on Orkney - I'm thinking of the Stromness hotel as it is close to the ferry.
