Probably a place originally designed to have shared bathrooms being retro-fitted with en-suites to suit the needs of the "modern" traveller.

Just be careful they don't try and charge you for leaving a negative review ;)

Im sorry, but Cerial, Tea and toast
Most Definatly
IS NOT
continental breakfast, fauls advertising by them. As to the rest of it, sounds a tad lacking.

On a totally different subject, has anyone on here ever used:
Nightowl Truckstop accommodation, Kingstown Carlisle
Roadhouse B and B Carlisle
Royal Hotel Crewe
any input appreciated.

I know, it is incredible how much breakfast varies across the UK.

That truckstop one you list, it sounds vaguely familiar. Some way out of town on the north side? If it is the one I'm thinking of it was absolutely fine in 2005, although I can't quite remember much about it.

I have no gen on the rest of them, but I will suggest trying Townhouse B&B on Warwick Road if they're reasonably priced and available.

Sounds like it aye, if they charge me for a negative review I'll be making serious complaints to various companies!

Yes, a few years ago, and I promptly went out to buy a bargepole.

If I stay in Crewe these days, I use the Crewe Arms ( a 2 minute walk away, same road, nearer to the station anyway ) instead.

A spot of trivia, the current owners claim it was the worlds first railway hotel!

I had spotted that. A mate reccommended the Royal but I thought Id ask what others thought. What I liked about the Crewe Arms was the often low rates quite near to date of stay, something now not so common hense my business moving elsewhere. Whats up with the Royal Peter?

Well, assuming it hasn't changed ownership in the last few years let's just say it might be an idea to take Kim and Aggie along as well...

If it has changed ownership since I was there, then obviously I'd give the new owners the benefit of the doubt - it would be unfair not to.

One other point - I never even intended to stay there in the first place; bear in mind this was prior to Google maps being introduced... needed to stay in Crewe; knew there was a place next to the station but couldn't remember what it was called... look up hotels in Crewe, lo and behold there is a Royal Station Hotel.

So I ask them "Is that the place directly opposite the station, next to the railway?" They say yes, so I book it. It only became obvious that they had been, shall we say, a bit liberal with their locational definitions when I actually exited the station and realised that the place was most certainly not what I from that moment onwards knew to be the Crewe Arms.....!!!

I think it may have changed hands or at the very least changed name, would appear to now be traiding as just The Royal Hotel. Like many a budget hotel it gets a hard time on tripadvisor but have stayed many places with poor reviews and found them perfectly fine.

Do we know when it changed hands, or if the entire staff changed along with the change of ownership?

Stayed at the Waverley Hotel in Crewe for the 'Bournemouth Flyer' charter
Positives - very reasonable price, short walk from station
Negative - creeky floorboards can be irritating if you're trying to sleep

Not for bashing purposes, but purely as a B&B, can anyone recommend anything in Liverpool, my stipulations:
1) Own bathroom (can't abide shared bathrooms in this day and age)
2) Fairly close to Lime Street Station, or close to a MerseyRail city centre station
3) Breakfast (cooked preferably, not continental!)
4) Reasonably priced (looking early October - 4 nights - Mon to Fri)
Thanks :)

I've stayed in two places, both on Lord Nelson Street, which runs along the left hand side of the station as you're looking at it. There's an exit from the station onto the street - it's the one that goes past the new Wetherspoons pub.

The first place is called The Lord Nelson, and is on the other side of the road from the entrance to the station. I found it quite adequate for a few nights (I stayed there for four or five, I think). It fits most of your requirements, although I can't remember whether the breakfast was cooked or continental, as I didn't have it most mornings.

The other one is on the station side and it's called The Liner. This is more
up-market and therefore more expensive, but it's pretty good all the same. I was there for a weekend (Friday and Saturday night) and had a good time. It does fit all your requirements.

I hope that this helps.

Travelodge Walthamstow.

Great location, a stones throw from Walthamstow Central, usual Travelodge beds through.

Nearby Tesco Express which is handy to have for early morning supply raids

I followed another customer into the hotel as the front door was locked (arrived around 22:30).

Looked open in the evening and was open at 6:30 on the monday morning.

Another two hotel reviews from me, quite the unexpected results too! Certainly I'd have expected it to be the other way around...

30th August 2015 - Malmaison, London

I won't do the total reviews in this thread, as I'll be keeping those as TripAdvisor exclusives. Not that I've posted on there yet, that job is for tomorrow. The below will still suffice as a idea though of what to expect.

Immediate reaction, after an approximate 5 minute walk from Farringdon station, that this place is posh! I feel ridiculously out of place here, I've never had a hotel with a mini bar in the room, let alone a cocktail bar downstairs!

The free WiFi works on my phone, a miracle in my experience, and it's very reliable and quick too!

The bed, well it's not terribly comfortable but it's still better than Travelodge beds. The pillows are better than Travelodge too, but not by as much as I'd like.

The coffee is some sort of weird filter coffee in packets, not Nescafe at least, which is odd to me but it works. Usual hotel nonsense of not enouh milk or sugar of course!

Bathroom, while posh, had a shower that really didn't like me much and just about got to lukewarm eventually. This was in room 203 for reference

My experience was also ruined by the fire alarm going off at 0320 in the morning. Someone was smoking in their room apparently. It took forever for the heart rate to return to normal!

Breakfast continental box was a ridiculous £16.95 so I declined that!

I'm not coming back here, too out of place there and too many negatives for me to recommend it.

31st August 2015 - Lansdowne Hotel, Croydon

Ah now this is more like it. It's a 5 minute walk from East Croydon, and while modern the reception isn't full of snobbish people. The reception guy was most pleasant and professional, and I was soon in my room, number 402 for reference.

The only issue I had with my stay was that the door needed attention for my room, as you had to bang it to make it shut. It must have been more than awful for those in the adjacent rooms!

Bathroom was a good size, and the room itself huge. The bed is not super comfortable, but still better than the one in Malmaison and Travelodge. Good pillows too, just the sort of thing I want in a pillow, nice and soft but also thick enough for good support.

The shower worked well and knew what hot was, happy days and always a bonus to have a decent shower in a hotel room!

Very good kettle and tea/coffee provision but the usual hotel thing, not enough milk and sugar! There's even a sofa in this room, which is a trifle odd in my experience. The free WiFi worked happily on my phone, always a bonus, and was reliable and quick too.

I can't comment on breakfast, as I didn't pay for it.

I was very pleased with my stay here and more than happy to recommend this one to anyone needing a place to stay in London. I finally have a London hotel to add to my favourites, slowly but surely I'm finding good ones around the country!

After my first if two nights at Clarke Cottage guest house which is a 2 minute walk from Dunfermline Queen Margaret station

For me its 9/10 its a very nice place the room size is decent the beverage tray is fully stocked the room has a fridge the owner is a very nice polite lady called Aileen the breakfast is buffet style and is bacon, sausage, tomato, egg, beans , black pudding and the usual cereals, toast , yoghurts cheese, ham tea/coffee orange juice etc but for me the reason i didnt give the place 10/10 is whilst the sausage & bacon is of butchers quality and very nice the fact the hot plates with food in are only kept warm by what looks like a candle and as a result it was not even luke warm but i found it tasty it would have been perfect had it been hot

The bed was very comfortable aswell and i got single occupancy in a twin room for £38 including breakfast if you want room only its £33 so very good overall and i would stay here again and recommend it

Links Hotel, Montrose
Stayed there Friday night for the various BLS / PLEG events over the weekend.
Very good, and one that I'd certainly recommend.
About 7 or 8 minutes walk from Montrose station.

Rugby Central Travelodge

Great location (less than 5 minute walk from Rugby station), has a little Tesco Express next door.

However if you are on the station side, you hear the station announcements, so don't think of having an early night. Plus the usual travelodge beds.

Glad you warned me about the announcements thing, I might well pass on using that one then to go do Polesworth!

Review of Nitenite Hotels (Birmingham branch) and their luxury apartments is coming soon, hopefully it will go up tomorrow. Full review as always on TripAdvisor, but that hasn't been done yet either. Rather behind on my bookwork as you can tell!

In just over a week I shall have a review of a hotel in Ireland to come too!

I stayed in the Premier Inn in Llanedeyrn last year and I have to say that was excellent. It was expensive but I got a good night's sleep and the TV and WiFi worked extremely well. The staff at reception when I arrived and left were very pleasant and helpful as well although I didn't get to try the breakfast as I had an early start. I would stay there again but it's a bit too far outside the city centre, so I'm hoping to find a guest house in or near the city centre for next time I go to Cardiff, hopefully in December

Earlier this year I stayed at another Premier Inn, this time the one on George Street in Glasgow. Again it was very good all round and I managed to sample the breakfast while I was there which was excellent. 10/10 for both from me

I'm booked for Travelodge Gatwick airport Central on 10th Oct, and Premier Inn Gatwick Airport on 17th Oct.

Booked them both solely on price being cheapest under 1 mile from south terminal. Didn't even bother reading the description! Both are close to Gatwick station.

Hopefully they are not the sort of hotel which are "under 1 mile" from the terminal, but that is how the bird flies and to reach the terminal from the hotel involves a detour due to a runway being bang in the middle :P
