I have a strong feeling the make-or-break of the next 5 years will be who can control the economic narrative. Currently it's the Tories, but that doesn't necessarily have to be the case, and now that Tory-lite seems to be off the agenda we might start seeing something better come about.

This is likely wishful thinking though, what with the Murdoch press and the Mail being dead against anything Corbyn does. It feels very reminiscent of the way the Republicans treat Obama, where anything he does (no matter what it is) is treated with contempt.

That would be an interesting election. Corbyn vs Johnson. Possibly with President Trump waiting in Washington.

Christ - when does that rocket ship leave for mars?

that's the point isn't it - we have lost the narrative of our last period in office - and i don't see how we get it back. The media will be like this for 4 years. Can we overcome this by grass routes activism and dealing with people locally?

Perhaps those local York voters may well find it difficult to come to an agreement with that MP over the wording that he used.

I imagine even labour voters will be quite miffed at the suggestion that waiting longer for a hospital appointment is just something they will have to put up with.

Incidentally the MP is a woman.

Such is politically generated journalism that no-one should be at all surprised by the opportunity afforded to them by the result of that last Labour Party leadership election result.

I see Youtube now has a Tory party film plastered all over it entitled 'Labour: a threat to our national security'

With such sperious nonsense as:

'Jeremy Corbyn thinks that Bin Laden's death was a tragedy'

Well, he did say this, but only because we couldn't put him on trial! That was the only reason!

Also, do you notice that, although you can like/dislike and comment on Labour Party videos, the Tories have blocked both features?

Freedom of speech indeed...

A Labour MP extolling the virtue of a longer wait for hospital appointments...

Maybe this is part of the new Corbyn allowance of freedom for MP's not to adhere to party dogma, but to allow freedom of personal expression at all times...

Indeed. Needless to say, I haven't watched it.

I had an email from the Conservatives and I'm seeing stuff from them on Facebook along the same lines.

Although I'm a Labour member, I tend to strongly take the view that most people on all sides are doing the best they can for the country consistent with their own understanding of the world, and for that reason I've often defended the Conservatives when people accuse them of dishonesty/bad intentions/etc. But this sort of thing is starting to make me feel *really* disgusted with the Conservatives. Coming just 5 months after an election campaign in which senior Conservatives repeatedly made claims about the economy and about the impact of the SNP on politics which they must surely have known not only amounted to scaremongering but were at best of highly dubious accuracy, accusations of 'a threat to national security' just make me think, is there nothing too low for the Conservatives to stoop to?

I haven't seen the youtube video, but the stuff I've been getting on facebook is full of quotes from Corbyn that sound bad by themselves but have clearly been taken out of context and have clearly been designed to present him in a misleading light.

I didn't vote for Corbyn, because there are too many policy areas in which I'm somewhat unhappy with Corbyn's approach. Like DarloRich, I voted for Andy Burnham. But frankly, what I'm seeing from the Conservatives at the moment is starting to make me wish I had voted for Corbyn, and it's making me even more determined to do everything I can to campaign to get the Tories out of power.

Indeed. I'm certainly sceptical about some of Jeremy Corbyn's policy preferences (and let's not forget, there's no guarantee he could get them all adopted by his party anyway), however, I find myself more inclined to give him a fair hearing.

Agreed. We have just come out of an election night when the better man lost. The Tories threw all their money at the marginals and stuck up large posters in places like Nuneaton, East Lancashire etc. while Ed Miliband tried wholeheartedly to use a microphone alone.

Likewise, I might have voted for Burnham if I could have done - I agreed with a lot of his views, and he seemed the most capable leader. However, after the press got stuck into him, he seemed to weak to be able to lead a party.

Jeremy Corbyn I don't agree with on a few things, but I'd prefer him to Liz Kendall and (probably) Yvette Cooper. She was certainly the most powerful of the candidates, but too right-wing for me.

Anyway, what's done is done, and the Labour Party now has to unite under Jeremy Corbyn to try and overthrow the Tories in 2020. It could happen.

I must have imagined all those Labour posters I saw throughout the country then...

To be honest I don't feel voting Labour or Conservative has much to do with it. We had a choice between two Neo Liberal parties that played their own bits in selling us all don the river. How we rejoiced as pay stagnated with rises below inflation. Even more so when house prices shot up.

I find it interesting that 'the Left' didn't field a candidate for the Deputy Leader, presumably on the basis that it was a lost cause. Diane Abbott may have stood if she hadn't been involved in the London mayoral election.
Did anyone on here vote for Corbyn? A member of my immediate family did, apparently.

I wouldn't be surprised if he was leader coming in to election campaign if thuere were some compromises on policies to keep other people in the party happy. For instance, proposing Burnham style re-nationalisation of the railways instead of Corbyn style re-nationalisation.

I sincerely hope that he isn't as the Labour Party won't stand a chance purely based on looks and age. It makes me very sad to say this but I'm afraid we will be in opposition for the next ten years, possibly longer. The man is a laughing stock.

If they're so intent on trying to taint his image, it means he is probably doing something right.

No that I can see, and I'm helping in a modest way to fund his organisation! All the Tory press are trying to do is hammer home a few more nails in our coffin.

As already posted Corbyn doesn't like the current format of PMQs. This week he's going to arm himself with questions set by the general public and he's looking in to different Labour MPs leading the questions.

Yes because he knows that the David Cameron will make him, and indeed the rest of the Party look stupid. That's why he's trying to pass the buck on to the general public and his own MP's. And lets face it the majority of those MP's will keep their mouths shut (if they have any sense) out of pure embarrassment.

I would not like to see Boris Johnson become PM because he is creepy* and I have never seen him outside of the M25, unless it's abroad.

*He looks funny and acts like a buffon. He really does remind me of Saville.

With our Jeremy suggesting that there should be a maximum wage cap (of what; 250K p/a?) Labour foot soldiers like myself helping out in marginals don't stand a chance. Not to mention leaving NATO to name but two.

Are you suggesting that Boris Johnson rapes children?

Labour MPs seem to have decided they disagree with the will of their own activists and members.

In all honesty with Jeremy Corbyn in charge of the Labour Party and his views on NATO I'm starting to think that they've got a point.

Not all the activists and not all the members. We must say a special thanks to Ed for allowing all and sundry to vote providing they raid the bank for three quid. Many thanks to Ed for an absolute master stroke in how to sabotage the election.

If they want to question Corbyn's views on NATO they can do it without creating a video designed to scaremonger for their own political gains.

I am just saying that BJ I find distinctly bizarre, like Saville. I could have said bizarre like Richard O'Brien but the right wing types liked to call Ed Milliband out for being slightly awkward and exaggerated it so there should be no noses out of joint for us lefties returning the favour.

The simple thing to do would be to discuss policies and avoid low-blows and distortions on both sides but I won't hold my breath.

PS: Whilst Jimmy Saville probably did do such things, he died before it went to court so you can't say that either.

The pigs are at the end of the runway, they're fed and just waiting for the people from air traffic control to give them the nod.

So comparing Boris Johnson to Jimmy Saville wasn't a low blow? At best your comment was ill advised.

Regarding your PS, are you suggesting that Jimmy Saville might have been innocent?

If the Tories are convincing themselves that the 2020 election is an open goal, they are definitely in line for an unpleasant surprise. There are enough undisciplined mavericks in their ranks to create a most unattractive image for the electorate. Cameron will need to keep a tight rein on all of this crowing over Labour's difficulties, particularly when their intended policies will be hard for anybody but the privileged to swallow.
Some commentators are saying that it is very dangerous for a political party to have very little or no opposition to contend with. I expect the more experienced government members to try and calm things down soon.
Apart from committed members of the Labour party, the electorate will sit and watch how things settle down. One thing sure is that it's by no means sure that Labour will be wiped out in 2020.

As a Labour Party member I think they are right to scaremonger. Not easy to type that but I have :(

I concur that we won't be wiped out but we haven't got a hope in hell of winning with our current leader in charge.

Corbyn has only been elected for two days, however, and as yet has not put any policies forward as leader of the Labour Party, thus without this factual base, the Conservative Party should not yet be releasing such videos, hence why I see it as scaremongering. The Tories are creating this black propaganda for their own political gain, not out of the interest of the public, hence why an e-mail sent out to Conservative supporters finishes with something along the lines of "we must never let Labour into power again".
