It says you have to live within 40mins to be considered, i live over 40mins away but would move immediately if i got the job. Would they take this into account or just write me off straight away?

If you get through the sift ensuring you clearly state you are willing to relocate and to where you will need solid evidence of your intentions to relocate.

Well it depends on the company. I know when I tried to apply to Southern, you couldn't put in an address that wasn't in the south or London itself. The application form wouldn't let you click submit. I thought Northern asked the question on their applications? If you click no, it sends you back to the main page, if you click yes you get to proceed. I'm in a talent pool for FGW, they ask you about relocating and let you progress all the way, other companies use such as London Midlands use it as a way of sifting through candidates without even reading your application.

Call it "Post code" sifting if you will!

I'd be surprised if they turned away people from outside the area who have already passed the assessments, though I have read of it happening with other TOCs. From what I saw when I went through the assessments with another TOC, about 20% actually got through.

I'd imagine that both Stages combined cost a few hundred quid per candidate. I reckon that if they didn't take anyone who had already passed, it would cost about a grand in assessment costs for each person who made it to the DMI. They just need to be absolutely sure that you will relocate.

In today's era of minimising costs, you'd think they'd jump at the chance to effectively interview someone for free. Unless they have to pay some sort of royalty fee to the OPC/TOC where the candidate passed.

Yes I've applied, I live within 45 minutes Drive and I've already passed the Psychometric tests at Watford. Fingers crossed! :)

I passed all my tests in 2013... I've been sifted by several companies due to location. If you try and apply for any role with Southern or Northern you will see what I mean... If you click no to the 45 minute question, it sends you back to the vacancy page and explains why with a nice apology "pop up". Give it a try

I've not heard anything other than the original acknowledgment email after submitting the application.

Just a quick update... I have already passed my assessments with another TOC. I have received an email stating that I will be getting an interview, although they cannot say when it should be soon.

Anyone else heard anything? :D

:lol::lol: I know... It's two years since I began the process with FGW. Since then I've had interviews with another 2, a medical with one of those and then they pulled the plug. I'm now awaiting a) a medical with FGW, b) an interview with Northern rail or c) a response after application from LM.

We will see but hopefully, 1 in 3 comes off and I can start training in 2016!!!:roll::roll:

Thank you, I will do. They have stated that they interview internal applicants first, then externals and they will be running a course in October but this will most likely be full. They will run another in 2016, so I hope this includes me.

Although it's another lifeline, I must say the honesty of the email and specific detail does give me some hope. I'm good at interviews, so hopefully it will be an interview this side of xmas and a medical in the new year etc...
