G'day everyone,

A Shark ballast brake van was spotted in a civil engineers siding between Doncaster and York in April of this year. Can anyone pin point the location, who owns it and why its stranded in the middle of nowhere? Given that they must be pretty rare I'm surprised that a preserved railway hasn't snapped it up.

Any ideas anyone?

Kind regards,

Richmond Commuter!

There's one at Tollerton but that's north of York, not sure about anything else further south.

Its not the only one, there is also the Shenfield Shark, which has been residing there since it got a hotbox on a ballast train on the Southend road back in the early 1990s. It was supposed to be removed before the Olympics (the 2012 one), but despite having been fitted with a wheel skate there is no further movement. Rumoured at one time to be going to the Epping & Ongar.

That might be the one! It was passed on route to a railway themed stag weekend and the drinking had already started hence my rather fuzzy memory! Do you have any idea as to who owns it?

That sounds almost like the perfect pick-me-up :D Would love to know the sort of venues that were visited that night...

I can't recall any sidings between Doncaster and York, howevere there is one north of York (tollerton) between York and Thirsk.

The Tollerton one was dumped there after being part of a formation for a ballast train. It was found to be just at the right temperature to toast marshmallows on after the handbrake was left on. It is owned by DB Schenker yeah
