I was just looking through the HondaWanderer photo site and found this image:

http://www.hondawanderer.com/47525_Hinksey_1991.htm

The first carriage behind the loco seems to be a Mark 2A/B/C. Does anyone have any other photos of non air-conditioned mark 2s in Intercity livery? I don't think I've ever seen that before. Were there not many, and did they not last long?

I've never seen one either although I have seen plenty of 00 gauge models of a BFK so assumed there had been some in real life and now I know there was at least one!

There weren't many early Mk.2 coaches in this livery - just a small number of BFKs and possibly one or two BSOs as well. BFK 17093 is one that springs to mind....

According to my Platform 5 book from 1990 there were the following in Intercity -

2 X Mk2z BFK
4 x Mk2A BFK
8 x Mk2C BFK

1 x Mk2A BSO
2 x Mk2C BSO

I don't think any TSO's were done apart from one that was exported to Israel to be used in a restaurant.

I wasn't far off then! (No P5 book to hand at work....)

An IC liveried TSO exported to Israel? I'm not aware of that, although I know some TSOs went to Israel for service in the 70s - do you have details? The only thing I can think of similar to that was a model that Lima, a Mk.2b TSO branded 'Restaurant Buffet' or similar with a fictitious number. Quite why they did that I have no idea...

It was Mk 2z SO M5250. Sold to Apropro Ltd 08/87. Sold with a few Mk1's if I recall.

I cant remember the location now but I did find them on google street view a few years back in a sorry state.

Judging by the roof hatch at the far end of the vehicle my thoughts are that it is a 2C vehicle. Michael Harris' book on the Marks 2s says that only around 20 or so Mk2,2A,2B,2C vehicles were painted in Inter-City livery

Apparently this limited refurbishment programme of earlier non-aircon mk2 (and mk1) stock came about due to a growth of InterCity traffic during 1987/88 and their use was intended mainly for relief workings and summer holiday traffic.

I recall traveling on a IC livered mk2C BFK from Edinburgh to Manchester back in April 1989, with the remainder of the train formed of (I think) mk1 catering vehicle and the rest being mk2 aircon's, I think the introduction of mk2 RFBs from 1989 onwards saw off the last of these earlier mk1/2s on XC services by 1993ish.

Interesting, thanks. I'd be interested in seeing a pic if anyone finds one - a quick search on google has come up with nothing. :(

Thanks everyone for the replies, especially the photo link! I'll try searching more fleet numbers to get photos - if anyone finds any others please post them here!

Thanks, that's interesting. I've had a look in the book 'British Rail Mark 2 Coaches: The design that launched InterCity' and all it gets there is one sentence mentioning it being painted into IC colours and exported to Israel for use as part of a restaurant complex. Sadly, there don't appear to be any pictures of it, and I suspect the coach no longer exists now.
