A brilliant end of the report. That was most definitely a successful trip for you both!

cheers fishquinn, it was indeed, especially for John, clearing both the 20's and 26's, it took me another 2 yeras to get the rest of my 20's, I only needed 5 too. The last scottish one turned up, whilst passing Eastfield, when I was out bashing the shoves and out hunting 47717., mu last 20 turned out to be 20030 which I clicked at Longport, whilst heading to Crewe to Derby om 37408.

Wow that really was a productive time! It must have been exhausting mind, but totally worth it!

The two trips I picked for this thread, where we travelled by coach, were really productive indeed. To be honest tech, by the end they were but when you looked in your notebooks, it was more than worth it. The 2 dayers, were excellent because there was a BnB thrown in too, ok they were a bit more expensive, to cover coach hire and overnight stay and after you'd been in bed for a night, you weren't as knackered on the Sunday.

Worth the extra ching for the base camp on the longer ones I'd imagine, two days on a coach (even with all the bells and whistles a modern one brings) would be dire!

Usually a good laugh to be fair, however a load of guys, who have a few beers and boiled/pickled eggs too, the bus sometimes had the aroma of ole mcdonalds farm through the night

More excellent reminiscing there.
I never did an organised trip but I well remember the adverts in the mags at the time.
I'm getting all misty-eyed as I try to remember the moves of my youth :)

I remember doing a couple of those coach trips - albeit from a different part of the world. The first one was in about 1975 from the Bristol area to South Yorkshire and Humberside. That proved excellent for getting all the Tinsley & Immingham 20s as well as much of the other freight only locos that inhabited that neck of the woods. From memory we did Shirebrook, Barrow Hill, Tinsley, Doncaster (depot plus works), Knottingley, Frodingham and Immingham. I knew that permits were only held for Donny Works so as a relatively young lad, I naively wondered how we'd get into all the other depots. It soon became apparant when the tour leader would head off with either large boxes or several large, plain brown envelopes and within minutes, access for forty odd youths was secured. The tried and tested combination of beer, cakes (rumoured to be home-made) and/or copies of Mayfair/Playboy worked a treat everywhere we went. I understand that by the time we had got to Immingham, not all the supplies for the depot foremen had been used up and the tour leaders thought it would be a waste to over supply the Immingham staff so after a quick consultation with the coach driver, we tried Toton on the way home. The "leftovers" worked a treat and we certainly came away with a few bonuses. But it was my mate, several years my senior, who had initially persuaded me to go on the trip who had the best day of all - he cleared his 47s at Immingham with 47316.

The other coach trip that I did was an add-on to a Bristol to Edinburgh excursion. One enterprising guy hired a coach for the 10 or 11 hours that we were in Edinburgh (train went up and back overnight to maximise time in Edinburgh) so we hit Haymarket, Millerhill, Grangemouth, Eastfield, St Rollox Works, Polmadie and Motherwell. But Shields Road proved to be a bridge too far. Each depot visit was conducted with military precision - only around 15 minutes to get everything and we raced around the works much to the annoyance of our guide who wanted to stroll around explaining everything to the party! This one was back in 1976 from memory.

Those were the days .....

Ah excellent, I'm glad I wasn't the only one, to do such a thing. I never got round Immingham Keith:(, the times we tried, we never succeeded, permit or get out basically. I always missed the trips where they got round Crewe Diesel too:cry::cry:.

The Trip to the Welsh and Devon and Cornwall Depots and Stabling Points
(the bit between first)

After the blitz of the Scottish Depots and stabling points, John and I went up to see Glen, we were mulling over, where to go next, we were gonna book another coach trip but neither John or I could get holidays around Easter time, so Glen suggested why dont we just do some filler moves, days out here and there, at the time there was still many a loco hauled turn to be getting. So thats what we did.

I don't have to explain on here as you all know, the winter months, standing lineside after 5pm(especially at Tyne Yard) are pointless, you can see nothing and usually its damn cold, we'd spend a couple of Evenings a week at Central Station, we'd usually call it the coaching stock months, basically we'd just rattle round, trying to put a dint in the HST stock, sometimes we'd get word of a loco off the Tyne Valley dragging a dead DMU, we'd scramble to the safest connection, normally anywhere between Newcastle and Hexham or we'd go down to Durham or Darlington on one of the trans pennine turns, hang round there and come back on a similar turn back.

Those filler moves were usually good fun, we went to York, done a few of the loco hauled turns to Scarborough, normally 31/4's, wagons and 47's, usually bailing at Malton and returning on the one going back, the York-Plymouth turn too, was always good for a Western Region 47 too, we had 47558 Mayflower, 47606 Odin and 47615 Castel Caerphilly/Welsh Dragon etc on that very turn to name a few. If we got bored or too cold at York, we'd usually nip to Rail Riders world, buy some Shed stickers for our platform 5 covers or go to the NRM.

Carlisle was obviously a popular move for us, we'd whizz back and forth on the WCML electrics between there and Lancaster, down the S&C with them turns, to as far as the next safest and least longest fester point for one coming back, one memorable trip that way, saw us get a pair of 31/4's out of Carlisle, for a Scottish large logo 47/6, complete with Scottie dog, coming back. There was also, the trip up the Sou Western on the 47's up to Dumfries and back. One filler move, John suggested, why dont we go over to Carlisle, down the S&C, to Leeds and back home on various turns back, we did exactly that one rare Saturday we were all off and ended up in Sheffield and Doncaster too, blowing my weeks money for work in the process, meaning it was cheese or chopped pork sandwiches for bait till next thursdays pay, however what was prevelaint in those trips, was talk of June's coach trip. As time went by, the nights got lighter and we usually made for Evenings at Tyne Yard again or I'd meet Glen or John, sometimes both at Gateshead shed after work. John was less frequent at these, as he usually worked later but after that we'd go down to Tyne Yard where, we'd usually spend a good couple of hours.

Work for me, got better, in April, I'd went from being just the YTS lad, to a paid trainee, which meant I got the massive amount of £55 a week, plus expenses, which basically meant they paid for my monthly bus pass, which I had to pay for, well I say I did, my Dad did and I gave him the money after they deposited the money into my bank, the following Thursday, after I'd shown the reciept and bus pass ofcourse at the trainig centre office. However it wasn't all good news, from the May, I now went onto monthly pay:(

A week before we went, excitement amongst the 3 amigo's was fever pitch, not least because a)I had 2 weeks holiday and b) my first pay on new money was going in the bank, plus the expenses money plus the boat load of overtime, I'd accrued doing the stock take over Saturday and Sunday, training courses in new products and filling in for holidays. That pay day, a nigh on 17yr old me, went to the Cash point and nearly collapsed, My first proper pay, for a month was £346.78, later I got my pay slip. It was like a kings ransome to me. I got my board money out. When I got home, I showed my Dad and step mother my pay slip and handed over my board and went for a shower before heading out to meet Glen at Tyne Yard, my Dad came upstairs and said, here son and gave me the board money back, he said, you treat us all to a chippy tea and keep the rest, enjoy your first proper packet, he then told me, my gran told him, exactly the same, with his first pay, before adding, mind you, I got nothing like that in 1968. I jumped up and said, ah thanks Dad, you got yourself a Deal there.

The week leading up dragged, on the friday morning, we went over to Central Station, had a look round, then walked over the High Level bridge to Gateshead shed, when we got on the bank side, John was in front of us, I heard John scream and laugh, the jammy git had only scored 56074 and cleared his 56's before me, I was after 56069. I ribbed him about needing Kellingly Colliery but Glen and I had the advantage of going to a school, that had the ECML passing it, so we generally saw more stuff coming and going to Tyne Yard and beyond than than he did, so evenings at Tyne Yard, he'd click more than we did. After that excitement, we made for Tyne Yard, where John carried on the banter on the bus, saying how many 56's do you need again. We all laughed. Arriving at Tyne Yard, a 56 was coming in the bottom end of the yard on a MGR and John said, hey, you may need this and laughed, yeah yeah yeah, I said. I didnt but even so, John laughingly said, oh that was close, even though it was something like 56105. Needless to say, when a 47 came through on a Trans Pennine turn, I repeated his earlier statements.

About 4 o'clock we departed for home, to get ready for the trip, the bus was picking us up at 7.30 and I knew neither of us would miss it, we said our farewells for now and went home to pack our bags.

cheers lads, much appreciated.
Fowler, I can only remmber some of them, I had the notebooks with all these trips in, the numbers and times, they'd be great to pour over nowadays. However an acrimonious split up with the ex, about 5yr ago, saw the evil cow put everything together, I had in an old box, in the bottom of a wardrobe, the old platform 5 books, photos, notebooks the whole kit and kaboodle, she put the lot in a bin and burnt the lot, she even gave my expensive and powerful bino's away to her old man, who promptly flogged em on ebay, all this because I couldn't come and collect it all that day due to being at work, I could've cried. Women eh?

Blimey mate that is grim. Really sorry to hear that. I have on the whole been lucky when I have split up with women. Don't know what to say! At least you still have it all inside your head and some of it is recorded on here. Like I say it is a great read and takes me back.

The Trip to the Welsh and Devon and Cornwall Depots and Stabling Points
(Part 2)

As I walked in the gate, I was thinking of all those renumbered 37's Im gonna need in Wales and how many gronks I'd cop for sight, when me Dad came to the door and said, What time you going?, your gonna have to get your skates on lad. I told him, Im not getting picked up till half 7 and its only half 4 now. My stepmother had kindly done my bait box up and me dad had the flask ready just to pour the water in.

I went upstairs and packed me bag, with 2 changes of clothes, I wouldnt be back till Sunday, toiletries, cassetttes for me walkman, batteries and got my money out the drawer and put it on my bed, I quickly threw a Sex Pistol's LP on, got a blank cassette and taped the 1st side when I was having a shower, then taped the other side, when I got out. In no time it was half 6, John said, he'd knock for me at 10 past 7, even though the bus stop we were getting picked up at was a mere 5 mins away, if we dawdled there.

I got downstairs and as usual with my Dad, it was, have you got this and that, your bait box, dont forget it, your flask needs the water in, you put spare duds n socks in the bag, your not showing me up, turning your duds inside out to get another day out of them, I jokingly said, I dont think so Dad, I better check, when my stepmother jumped in and said, oh its like father like son in that department is it?:lol: I done the rest what I needed to do and got impatient at 5 past 7, i walked 2 doors down and knocked on John, his Dad answered the door and said, come in, he's just finishing off his colouring book, John was packing his bag, when John's Mam came in the kitchen and said, I hope you've packed clean underpants and socks too.

Last thing John put in his bag was his bino's, he had the best bino's, they were great for Tyne Yard, well Yards in general to be fair, when his Dad said, you can't take them!!, John said, why not, they're mine? he said, I use them, when your Mams on nightshift, I need them to see if shes coming along the street when I've got my tart in:lol::lol:, we all laughed, his mother saying, ignore him.

We got to the bus stop about 20 past and Glen was stood there, where you two been, Ive been here for 10mins, I joked, oh we both had to check to see if we'd brought clean undies, he laughed and said, my mam asked that too.

10mins or so later we were on the bus, as we got on we were handed an intinary of the trip, the main man came on the mike and said, you'll notice theres no Thornaby bank side tonight and no Knottingley, thats because we're aiming to get into the midlands as soon as, that way we can get stuck into the Welsh and South West, side of things sooner, you have a problem with that, there's a big 6ft 4 bloke down the front here, who'll be happy to take up your complaint. We knew the itinary, thats why we were on the bus. it read;
Friday./Saturday
Newcastle Central- Gateshead-Stockton(pick up only) Saltley-Bescot-Gloucester-Swindon- Reading-Didcot- Bristol Temple Meads(2hours)-Westbury- Meldon Quarry-Merehead(Depot Visit)- Bristol Temple Meads(2hours)-Cardiff Canton-Landore-Margam- Barry Island, overnight stay in Barry. Those wishing to go to Cardiff Central for the evening, the coach will leave an hour after check in and return back to Barry Island from Cardiff at 11pm.
Sunday
Various Stabling points in South Wales-Exeter-St Blazley- Plymouth-Laira(depot visit)-Acton Yard-Knottingley.

Safe to say it was going to be a busy few days, I was disappointed not to be calling at Thornaby bank side but didnt really fancy my chances with the main mans mate, so I kept schtum. John asked, is there owt worth seeing in Gloucester? I said, whey aye, them hunslet shunters, 97653 and 4, they'll be big cops mate and no doubt there'll be another gronk of sorts and the odd loco parked up.

We had a bit craic with the rest of the guys on the bus and one of the lads from Teeside said, I think I saw you 3 the other week, Glen said, Really, we didn't see you, he said, I'm sure it was you's who were at Darlo, we all said aye, that'll have been us, I said, you should've came over and had a bit yack, he said I wasn't sure it was you 3, I thought I recognised you but couldn't remember where from. We chewed the railway fat, for a good while after, telling him where we'd been and what had been on this and that, we were quizzing each other about what was floating round Tyne Yard, Thornaby and Tees Yard. Not long after the dominoi card came round, we got 2 numbers each and agreed to share if we won, 10mins later we had a fiver each in our pockets, Glen's number come up, result.

About 11pm we stopped at a motorway services, to stretch our legs, the main man collared us, asked how we were doing and why we hadn't been on any other trips, since January, work basically John and I said, Glen said he was revising for exams and going to college. I said, how long before Saltley and Bescot? and was told about an hour and a half to Saltley, after that they should come relatively thick and fast.

More enjoyable stuff there.
I particularly liked the bit about recording an LP onto cassette, that was a blast from the past and no mistake :)

Thanks for ther kind words folks, very much appreciated indeed, too kind. In total honesty, the 2nd part would've been finished, had I not deleted it by mistake:oops::oops:.

Part 2 continued.........
We climbed back on the bus, John was yacking to Glen about something and made their way to our seats but I'd been collared, down the front by the main man, Im asked can I have 5mins, Im told to sit down and then he says, theres a trip round London in a couple of months if you fancy it?, ask your lads if they're interested, I said, I will do but wheres on the agenda though?. He goes into his speel, I've applied for a permit for Stewarts Lane and Stratford, plus we'll call at Knottinglay, Doncaster and Peterborough Stations, Ely, March, Ripple Lane, Hither Green, Selhurst, Willesden, Old Oak and a few others, once we've done them, we'll set you's down to do what you want in London till half 10 and leave from Kings Cross at 11pm, inside I'm like, oh sweet jesus, that will press a lot of buttons in my book, on the outside, I'm saying, sounds like a good trip that, I'll ask the lads, you doing anything on the way home too? Im told, Im sure we can arrange that.

I walk up the bus and Glen and John, were saying, what was that about? I said, I'll tell you later, after we've been to Saltley. John was saying, just tell me man, I said, I will but not now, the impatient sod says, write it down on there, I went, honest mate, it's worth waiting for. About 45mins later and shortly after 1am, we arrive at Saltley and see 2 or 3, 58's parked up, Glen says, well this looks promising, 2 lads got off the bus armed with a tray of something, 10mins later, we get the nod, we're off the bus and boy, theres a bit on, I click 2 of the 58's, sure 1 of them was 035 but I cant remember the other, 2 gronks are scored too, John clicks 2 NB 47's too, I needed the nameplates off both them too. Glen wasn't saying anything but he was laughing, which was a good sign. We walked off the depot towards the coach and were having a tab, when Glen said, Come on then, whats the crack? I tiold them both about the London move, John just whistled one of them long whistles and Glen said something silly like, wooaah fanny rockets, which meant he was impressed. We booking then John asked, we'll only need a weekend off, I fancy it, I had to admit, John said, well Im in, if you are I said, ok I'm in too too, we both turned and looked at Glen, Glen said, oh why not then. I said, I'd tell the main man, when we got to the hotel. Lets enjoy this one first. We boarded the bus and sat for the short while yacking about Saltley before all too soon, we pulled up at Bescot.

We sat awaiting the nod, it duly arrived about 15mins later, the place was heaving, I clicked another gronk, there was a 31/4 I needed there too, the biggest cop was 31142, a big get in was shouted when I got my eyes on it, Glen knew, I'd needed it for a long while and he looked at me and said, oh nice one, that's one of your required ones isn't it, I said it is mate. I walked a bit further down a line of loco' and there was 58020, that got got similar treatment to 31142. I walked off that depot delighted, as did John and Glen, we'd all tapped into a fair wad of cops in some shape or form.

With the time now close to 3 in the morning we were heading towards Gloucester, before nodding off John said, I cant believe we're going there just for a shunter, I said, aye but not just any shunter, a one we all need to underline and one thats never going to come wor way mate. I dont think he was too convinced but we were all nodding off, the loud snores and breaking of wind, had become more apparent, as the bus descended into a quiet hush, well sort off. Glen woke John and I up, howay lads, we're here, we clambered off the bus and just walked around, no-one was about and not many loco's either, that I can remember, however the yellow shunter, 97653 was scored, so we boarded the bus happy.

We moved onto Swindon but there was absolutely nothing there, we're told there's normally an 08 parked here, seen as there was nothing to report, I let John and Glen sleep, I walked to the front of the bus and got off to have a ciggy with a few others, an UID 47 came through on a freightliner, still dark then, so after 15mins we all boarded the bus and set off again to Reading, first light was rising when we got there, we got on the station, picked off a few units, stayed 20mins and left for Temple Meads, with the promise we'd call back at Didcot tomorrow morning.

When we got to Temple Meads, there was some groggy heads got off that coach, we walked in an the very first thing we saw was 47571 London Standard in its new Network South East pyjamas, Glen needed the name and livery but John and I had a new underline in the book, after a while and a few units copped, John, Glen and I decided we'd try our luck at getting round Bath Road, we spoke to a big elderly guy, who we'd been informed was the foreman, we told him, where we'd came from and whatever bull we could muster to get round, the bloke looked at us and went 10mins, no walking out the front or back, stay in the shed, we galloped round and said, thanks very much mate, as we left, we did cop a gronk inside but not much else but we'd added Bath Road to the list. We got back to the station and told a few we'd got round, a few more chanced their arm and got round but a fair few got knocked back too.

The next bit, I was really looking forward too, Westbury and Merehead, not least because I'd seen a pic of 50149 in railfreight livery there in Rail Enthusuiast and boy did it look good and I also needed it. We left Bristol just as 50043 arrived and was promptly copped. A while later we pulled into Westbury, where 56040 Oystermouth one of Glen's last ones, passed us with I pressume a stone train, there's a gronk up there and a few locco's stabled, Glen was saying to John and I, however I thought, nowt to get really excited about here and there was certainly no sign of 50149, I was talking/moaning to to John, whilst having a ciggy, saying, I definitely thought 50149 would be here today, a 47 came off the stabling point and past us, I had to do a double take, when long standing requirement 47901:o:D had just trundled past, you could've knocked me down with a feather, that one certainly caught us by surprise, John Glen and I, all needed that one.

We boarded the bus and set off for Meldon Quarry, one lad needed the gronk there to clear his gronks, John said, just one gronk, to clear them, thats some going, even I can't moan about going there for a single gronk, adding, imagine if it's not there though. When we arrived there, the gronk was indeed there and the guy down the front was was deliriously happy, at seeing his last 08 but even so, I bet he wasn't as happy as we 3 were, sure we needed the gronk too but the fact 50149 was parked up there too, had us 3 in raptures:D, now that was a result and a half, Glen chirped.

Off we set for Merehead, the prime objective, the new Class 59's that Foster and Yeoman had bought, a guy came round to meet us and showed us round, it was now a gloriously sunny day, I'm sure they had there own super shunters, though I cant really remember, we walked round a corner and there in front of us was 59001 002 003 and 004, all glorious cops indeed, the guide let us climb aboard 59001 to look in the cab. Everyone boarded the bus in a happy fettle, having got the lot of Foster and Yeoman's locos in one fowl swoop, 59005 hadn't even been ordered yet, well I don't think it had anyway. We set off for Temple Meads to hopefully put a dent in our 50 requirements.

Ouch to the deleting of it! But it was another great read. And, as always, I'm looking forward to the rest.

thanks fishquinn, what we didnt realise at the time, when Foster and Yeoman brought the 59's over, in effect it was the start of the red death on the rails.

This is true. I remember being massively excited the first time I saw 59001 trundle through Reading.

Some brilliant reads there mate, fair dos! Really enjoying the insight into the past, I just wish I could have been there.

I know what you mean about your first proper pay packet, it's an awesome feeling isn't it! Just doesn't go far mind

59003 is a requirement for me, I think I saw it at Edge Hill yesterday but not convinced I did as while it was in GBRf colours and had a metal number plate like the other 59/0s, I wasn't expecting it so only just glimpsed it. Really hoping it was that one, as I'd love to be able to mark it off!

As always with your trip reports, I look forward to the next part!
