The Lincoln to Linlithgow was turned back at Berwick and headed to Edinburgh via Newcastle and picked up stranded passengers at Anmouth from the Cross Country to get them home.

NR could do it easily, whether there would be stock to run a service such as the Floodex is less clear.

I only asked given their recent tickings off by the ORR and other interested parties reference poor planning and execution of projects

They have a good reputation for small projects, the problems have been with big projects like mainline electrification.

The same ORR who keep making a complete bollocking mess of NR's budgets by telling us we're all far too pessimistic and insist we can do so much more, in less time and at a far lower cost.

Network Rail have more than enough people that could have a new station up and running in the least time possible. Don't mistake the institutional blundering with individual incompetence - that's absolutely not the case, there's lots of really good engineers and planners on the railway who can and it seems frequently do work miracles.

I'm curious as to how the disruption compares to the floods back in November 2009, which was caused by a similar weather pattern.

My daughter and friend were on their way back from London. I was waiting for them at Beaconsfield but they were sat at South Ruislip not moving. Suddenly the place turned blue. A major incident had been called due to the tree strikes and a place got swamped by police, btp, fire, ambulance.... they thought there had been a derailment. Must have been 20 vehicles. I gave up waiting and drove to SR to get them. Absolutely no communication or announcements from Chiltern and they refused to answer the so called "help" system.

Perhaps they were too busy try to sort everything out?

Heard a Rail Replacement Coach for the WCML has overturned!

Don't know where that came from because both Virgin and Northern haven't been supplying any road transport for exactly that reason i.e too dangerous.

Out of interest have Virgin and TPX got any units stranded the wrong side of the floods at the moment?

I saw footage from Hexham and Corbridge on Look North; the Tyne burst its banks; it seemed bad and my first thought was would the line be affected (as the line is low near Hexham/Corbridge)?

Tyne Valley line should be OK as most of the line is up and above the river. Most of the flooding comes from the farmland. Last year the line was flooded between Riding Mill and Corbridge due to run off from the fields.

I'd expect there's a couple of pendos up north and a 350?

Well BBC news has just had a women on the phone who says they are having to spend the night on a train in Carlisle station, she says that after waiting 2 hours at Preston they got a coach to Carlisle but the coaches aren't going any further tonight

There are a number of farmers who think the railway is a substitute for a proper drainage system on their land.

Have they opened up a stationary train at Carlisle just so that people have somewhere to spend the night? Very decent of them if so.

Rather than booking stranded passengers into hotels and giving other accommodation "where possible" as per NRCoC? ;)

That would appear to be the case, said the train was cold and staff had given out emergency blankets looked like a 390.

could be nearby hotels are full and I believe at least 1 of the main roads in Carlisle is closed

Reports on WNXX that passengers stuck at Preston have been evacuated to a sports centre after a plan to bus them to hotels in Blackpool was abandoned.

I wouldn't imagine there's a room to be had in Carlisle tonight! I was just pointing out that rather than being decent of them, they were just fulfilling their responsibility to do what they could.

They're probably better off there to be honest ;)

I know some hotels in Dumfries have railway customers booked in for the night courtesy of scotrail because they couldn't go any further south.

Out here in SE Asia we tend to know about heavy rains and accompanying winds. I see from Realtime Trains that 1G21, Virgin East Coast Carlisle to Newcastle left Carlisle, 60 mins late and arrived Newcastle 310 mins late.

Must have been a horrific journey for passengers, but kudos to the driver and crew and others for an excellent effort in the conditions.

The train hit a very large tree and it took some time to extricate it from the debris, but at least everyone's hard work paid off and they got folk back to Newcastle.
