Unfashionable of late, but I still believe that Slade, 'Merry Christmas Everybody' is both the best Christmas song of all time, and stands the test of time as a classic rock song in its own right.

Can you believe that as recently as 2007 Radio 1 played an edited version of Fairytale Of New York "because some members of the audience might find it offensive"?

I can remember having to switch over Top of the Pops because my mum walked in during the 'offensive' section

Yes.

That would be my answer if we were just looking at "modern" Christmas songs.

Despite being an atheist and not really celebrating Christmas, I have to say that my favourite two Christmas musical numbers are both very religious in nature. The Christian mythology surrounding Christmas is not something that I particularly associate with, but I find these compositions fantastic and very evocative of that part of Christmas, which is of historical importance and is still important to many around the world.

Hark! The Herald Angels Sing

Messiah - For Unto Us a Child is Born

I really don't think that any popular numbers have reached the heights of the classical Christmas music, at least not in my opinion.

Mistletoe by Justin Bieber. :P

Nope, more seriously, I'd rather eat my own foot than listen to that rubbish. :D It can't be that much worse than VTWC's current breakfast option.

I don't really like the commercialised songs that much, really. All I Want For Christmas by Mariah Carey does feature in one of my favourite movies (certainly my favourite Christmas one, and the actress does a really good job), but it's overshadowed by Bill Nighy. That song would be my number one pick. :D

However, how about this? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2yfoswn3-Mo

Did you know that they made a movie out of that song? It's bloody awful.

God, I remember that. It was awful.

Speaking of 'All I want for christmas is you', Classic FM have found an arrangement of it that is suitable for airing on their station, and have been playing it quite a bit lately.

I will counter this with a song by a MonkeyBucket - a local Lancaster-based band that was around 15-20 years ago. Their 'Xmas song' was performed to a similar tune to Wizzard's one, but with the lyrics (if I remember correctly)

I wish it could be Christmas for one day
But it seems to start in mid July and end sometime in May

Which seem rather appropriate.

Sadly, they disbanded long before YouTube existed, which is probably why I can't find a recording of the song anywhere online to link to :(

Frankie goes to Hollywood, The power of love. I remember hearing that the first time, I was seven years old when they released it in 1984. I still bloody love it.

Fairytale of New York.

But honourable mentions to:
* All I Want For Christmas - Olivia Olson (not a fan of the original Mariah)
* Chiron Beta Prime - Jonathan Coulton
* The Night Santa Went Crazy (Extra Gory Version) - Weird Al Yankovic
* Slade

Oh, and, lest we forget:
