Is that a christmas song?

Depends on how you look at it. For me it reminds me of past Christmases, While I believe Holly Johnson didn't intend it to be a festive creation he did later say it had a biblical and spiritual sense, hence the original November release date.

I think it was in 1993 it was released as a Christmas themed song...the video had camels and the three wise men in it....can't get more Christmas than that....
Unless you count that awful Mel Smith-Kim Wild collaboration of rocking around the Christmas tree. Kill me now.

For me, the Song that makes me think of modern Christmas's especially when heard on radio stations in the last week before the break is 'Driving Home For Christmas' by Chris Rea.
Although I've never had to work away from home, for those who do, it must be evocative of the long haul home with a head full of Christmas's past.

On a more general note, I was in Tenerife when the news of Kirsty MacColl broke, since when 'Fairytale Of New York' has been a favourite.

* All I Want For Christmas - Olivia Olson (not a fan of the original Mariah)
According to Richard Curtis, she sang it so well originally that the sound team had to add in breaths between lines. And she was only ten.

For me it's a 3 way tie between Greg Lake (I Believe in Father Christmas), Pogues and Kirsty (Fairytale) and Bing and David (Little Drummer Boy/Peace on Earth).

If asked for my least favourite, it would have to be Paul MuckCartney and Wonderful Christmas Time. What a pile of cr@p. Just shows who had the talent on the Lennon/MuckCartney team. Happy Christmas (War is Over) v We're Simply Having a Wonderful Christmas Time - no contest. (And don't get me started on the Frog Chorus!)

To be fair to Macca, he did also do the superb Mull of Kintyre, which although strictly speaking not a Christmas song, was released at about that time.

Have yourselves a wombling merry Christmas everyone

Is that by Sylvia Kristel ? <D

Younger members () google her or perhaps goggle would be more appropriate :p

Ruddy heck... Thats a nice set of buffers on her *sniggers*

In order, the top three are

1) Slade - "Merry Christmas, Everybody"

2) Eartha Kitt - "Santa Baby"

3) Queen - "Thank God It's Christmas"

Is the correct answer
+1. I think the reason that we love it so much is that it subverts the pure and saccharine happy world that Christmas songs portray. Being miserable gimboids, we British quite like that.

I've never heard it censored either - similar to Elvis Costello's Oliver's Army.

* Chiron Beta Prime - Jonathan Coulton
"Not everybody's good but everyone tries." Brilliant song. :D

Remove the dots and you've got it! Where "uTIB10eQnA0" is, is everything after = in the video's URL.

Don't forget that [plain][/plain] can be used to show formatting. Simply put it around the formatting like this:

[plain][youtube]uTIB10eQnA0[/youtube][/plain]

And you'll get this:

I wondered if someone was going to post that

I've been surprised at the number of different posters that have been referencing xkcd on the forum this year. It seems there's a lot of fans coming out of the woodwork. :)

Drifting back to the topic, I'm much more of a carol-singing man than a Christmas pop fan. If I had to pick a favourite, it would be Suai'r Gwynt, also known as Hwiangerdd Mair or Mary's Lullaby. Having said that, I also enjoy belting out a bit of O! Come all ye Faithful/O Deuwch Ffyddloniaid/Adeste Fideles!

Yeah you're right, I mean Eleanor Rigby, Let it Be, Yesterday, Penny Lane, Hey Jude to name just five are just terrible terrible songs that nobody likes.

Terrible songwriter and performer who stole a living in his short lived career.

Perhaps you should write to Rolling Stone magazine and ask them how on earth they could rate McCartney as the 2nd best songwriter in history as he's so obviously rubbish.

Not songs I like but to say no one likes them is odd. I think you would have to justify yourself more first.

i don't understand why this thread is still going. The correct answer was at post #4. The rest are fighting for second and third.

Perhaps it is because we live in a democracy where freedom of speech is to be treasured and public debate is to be encouraged ;)

Or alternatively it is to show just how dire most Christmas songs actually are :(

All Christmas songs suck. I absolutely HATE the whole time of year. As for that bloody Pogues song, the only reason it's popular is because there's a bit of swearing in it

I'll add a few that I don't think have yet been mentioned...

My favourite 'classic' has got to be Shankin' Stevens with Merry Christmas Everyone

My favourite piece from a film would be Carol of the Bells most famous for an arrangement that I'm informed was by a John Williams for Home Alone.

My favourite contemporary piece I'm still making my mind up about, but Ariana Grande's Santa Tell Me seems a good bet.

And my favourite carol I really like Good King Wenceslas and I think the Huddersfield Choral Society did a great job of it, but can't seem to find a good one on YouTube.

Back on topic, Im a bit of a Humbug too and count the days till Boxing Day. That said when you here them for the first time there are a number of Xmas songs that give you a nice feeling.

Unfortunately Im a mobile DJ For a living (existance) and with some of the works parties for those wanting to pay less or who are in industrys who dont get much free time in Dec starting in mid to late Nov you quickly sicken of them and by now Id pay someone to remove every last 1 from my harddrive.

I do however love some of the charitty stuff thats often not festive that comes out round this time of year as Im fond of a good cover version.
