Anyway, I think this thread has been taken over by Weird Al. Not that that's a bad thing at all.

I prefer carols and orchestral things...I'm not religious, but they're certainly more nostalgic than listening to Paul MuckCartney - and much nicer, too.

I am rather fond of There's No Lights on the Christmas Tree, Mother, They're Burning Big Louie Tonight by The Sensational Alex Harvey Band.

The Pogues dirge is without doubt one of the worst Christmas songs ever made, tuneless and lyrically inept.

It remains however, a great advertisement for the beneficial aspects of dental hygiene :p

Shane MacGowan I saw on Daily Mail yesterday has had a tooth transplant and now has 22 nice looking nashers.

Sell out as opposed to a tooth out

Can we have at least one other endorsement of my Wizard choice please ?

Allow me to nominate (with tongue firmly in cheek) the hilariously cheeky:

The Darkness - Christmas Time (Don't Let The Bells End)

Number 2 in the chart, Christmas 2003.

See My Baby Jive was my Wizzard favourite but in the Christmas context yes it would be on my Christmas Island Discs. I'd struggle to find seven others to go with it though, certainly not most of the dross in this thread :D

Did I hear Elton John's Step Into Christmas played at Vicarage Road after Watford trounced Liverpool 3-0 yesterday?

I always remember Justin Hawkins saying how he managed to get bell(s) end into a Christmas song without it getting banned! (And ring piece!)"

All Christmas songs suck. I absolutely HATE the whole time of year. As for that bloody Pogues song, the only reason it's popular is because there's a bit of swearing in it
Bah Humbug to you to :)

One gets the Christmas one deserves

Yesterday, I had the misfortune to watch "A Very Murray Christmas" on either Netflix or Amazon in which Bill Murray murdered a Fairytale of New York. I'll never be able to unhear that and it has ruined my enjoyment of the song forever.

It's quite disappointing that I've not heard any Slade this festive season. Seem to have heard Chris Rea's 'Driving Home for Christmas' a few hundred times.

Nor have I heard 'Do They Know It's Christmas?' played in full. Not that it is a favourite.

I suppose we ought to be on New Year songs by now. I can't think of many, but Abba's "Happy New Year" from their Super Trouper album has to be up there with the best.

Auld Lang Syne?

Switched on to bbc at new years, they did the countdown, however after the 5,4,3,2,1 [thunderbirds are go] bit it didn't seem to be auld lang syne, or even Old Lang's Eye

Auld lang syne came after about 10 minutes or so of fireworks and other music. Even then it was the version that could have been a single by some obscure scottish band rather than a traditional poem
