I know this isn't a UK-specific topic and I don't want it to seem like I'm making random posts, but I figured this was important:

Thousands have pledged their support to a German vigilante group which has vowed to protect women from migrants in the wake of the New Year's Eve attacks in Cologne.

A week after a mob of 'drunk and stoned' migrants sexually assaulted and robbed 100 women on the streets of Cologne, a group known as 'Dusseldorf is Watching' has gained more than 8,000 Facebook members.

The group says it wants to make the streets safer through 'presence' alone but police have warned that 'searching for offenders is not a job for citizens'.

German police have said 18 of the 31 suspects arrested in connection with the Cologne attacks were asylum seekers.

They were arrested on suspicion of committing crimes ranging from theft to assault, and one case of verbal abuse of a sexual nature, Interior Ministry spokesman Tobias Plate told reporters in Berlin.

They were among an aggressive mob of up to 1,000 people in front of Cologne's main railway station on Thursday evening.

Two of the men were found carrying threatening, handwritten notes in German and Arabic.

The messages, which they are thought to have handed to women, included the phrases, 'I am going to kill you', 'I want to f***', 'I'm only joking with you' and 'nice breasts'.

Mr Plate said the suspects included Algerians, eight Moroccans, five Iranians, four Syrians, two Germans and one person each from Iraq, Serbia and the United States.

None of the 31 suspects were accused of committing the kind of sexual crimes that have outraged Germany this past week.

After the group was launched, and gained thousands of followers overnight, a Dusseldorf police spokesman told local media that German police is responsible for public security.

It's bloody sickening how a country invites supposedly oppressed people into a country and they reciprocate by attacking the natives. Many people vehemently opposed Merkel's plan but she went ahead of it anyway (she should resign). In the span of a few months, these "migrants" turned the once beautiful Germany into a warzone.

I'm a black American and I'm not anti-immigration. Both the US and UK have large immigrant populations. I think there are more Indian people in London than white Brits. Immigration is good if the immigrants assimilate and adopt the culture of the host country. However, when immigrants impose their beliefs on the natives, that's when there's a problem. For example, Munich is home to Oktoberfest. People from all over the world get on the ****. Everyone has fun. However, when migrants moved into Munich, they complained about Oktoberfest since they felt it was offensive. Another example is in the same region (Bavaria) where they demanded that women dress modestly, meaning covering their faces with hijabs. There's nothing wrong with wearing a hijab if you want to do so. I know two Muslims women and they are the nicest people I've ever met. One of them even sang Christmas carols. Nevertheless, they chose to become Muslims. They weren't forced to do so.

The "migrants" want to eradicate all of the traditions and culture of Western Europe. They want to turn Europe into Saudi Arabia or Pakistan. We need people to stand up to ISIS and migrants (who refuse to conform). Again, I'll emphasise that not all Muslims are bad.

There's a big problem where these incidents are kept from the media, but social media saw the Cologne story getting out, and now similar stories elsewhere in Germany and Sweden (which has had the problem for some time, but journalists can risk jail for race crimes, so tend to keep quiet or play down a situation). In the UK, we didn't do anything about 1400 girls being abused in Rotherham, because officials didn't want bad publicity and problems for foreign migrants who made up almost all of the offenders.

Of course, as ever, it's a minority but these were also very organised by a sizable minority. Notes on what words to say in German (like 'I will kill you', 'nice breasts') to the women.

It needs to be talked about so it isn't just up to the right wing parties to gain support. Nobody wants rash, kneejerk, reactions which is what will end up happening - diverting attention away from the very real problems at hand.

My bold.

Are you Donald Trump in disguise?

http://www.londonspovertyprofile.or...y-population/londons-population-by-ethnicity/

Key points
A majority of the London population is white, though not White British
Indian and Black African are the next largest groups at 7% of the population each
12% of the population do not fit into any of these groups

Supposedly oppressed? They're fleeing from death brough about by both ISIS and UK/USA bombs. No 'supposedly' about it.

It was a disgusting act, but the criminals represent less than 1% of all immigrants. Don't tar them all with the same brush.

She should resign for allowing people fleeing certain death safety? Ok then. I'd love to see you do a better job.

Complete and utter bull****. I live in Germany and it is in no way a warzone. You're talking out of your behind. Do we refer to England as a warzone every time there's gang violence?

Certainly seems like you are anti-immigration.

You get a few bad apples but for the most part most immigrants lead trouble-free, constructive lives in their new country. It isn't easy to learn a whole new language from scratch.
NY Yankee said:

Sure, let's blame the migrants. There were also 'natives' complaining about the noise, rowdiness and vandalism brought about by a minority of drunken idiots who don't know their limits.

Come on now. Do you realise how ridiculous that sounds?

Pull your head out of your arse and provide sources for all these far-fetched claims you're coming up with. Note that one or two nutjobs don't represent anyone else other than one or two nutjobs.
NY Yankee said:

By 'stand up to' do you mean indiscriminately bomb foreign cities, killing thousands of civilians, in the hope of killing one or two jihadis? If not, how would you 'stand up to' ISIS?

Migrants who refuse to conform, unless they're breaking the law, aren't doing anything wrong. As a Brit in Germany, I refuse to conform to some German aspects of life because they're strange, such as riding a bike on the pavement, other aspects I'll conform to, such as recycling all bottles and cans. Refusing to conform isn't the problem. It's isolating those who given more time might integrate better with society, through incoherent, factless rants such as yours. Some of the things mentioned in your post are just plain absurd.

So do all countries.

I basically agree with your post but I'll be a bit of a pedant and say that it might not really be 100% correct to say that *all* countries have a lot of immigrants. For example, Japan is famous for restricting immigration, which exacerbates its population loss. But if you go back far enough in history, you can usually find that people who are generally considered to be the "indigenous" people in fact came from somewhere else.

I've been a Londoner for over 25 years and I can assure you that this is certainly not the case!

My wife's family came over from India after WW2 which of course makes them migrants too. However they have never had any intention of "eradicating all of the traditions and culture of Western Europe". This is all very similar to the kind of things that the BNP like to peddle. The very same BNP who like to attack businesses and property that belong to Asians living in this country.

Both CNN and the Daily Mail gave the impression that women were being attacked by gangs of Syrian refugees on a daily basis and that half of the refugees were affiliated with ISIS. Maybe they distorted the truth.

People like you?

I've read the comments sections of the Daily Mail and Facebook. Almost everyone despises Merkel. I'm sure she thought she was doing the right thing, but she acted unilaterally without the approval of German citizens. There were many small German towns that were overwhelmed by the number of refugees. Let me give you another example: the UK is the greatest country in the world, we all know that. However, imagine if the entire population of Sudan emigrated to the UK. They came with no background checks and there wasn't a limit on the amount of people who came. And let's also imagine that instead of learning English and adopting a Cockney accent, they spoke in their native tongue. They also refused to acknowledge British holidays like Boxing Day and the Bank Holiday. They also desired to impose Sharia Law on British women. That's what's happening in Germany.

My former employer came from Taiwan. I have many relatives who are from the West Indies. They were immigrants, BUT they assimilated into American society.

NYC, London, and Paris were all attacked by terrorists. Had the US stayed the hell out of the Middle East then the terrorists wouldn't have attacked the Western nations. Nevertheless, that's in the past. We can fix what already happened. Instead, the Western nations need to stand up to terrorists. I agree that the terrorists hide behind women and children. They also hide in hospitals. Still, the Western powers can't stand idly by and do nothing.

If someone moves into a country then they should conform to the culture of that country. It's similar to someone being a guest in another person's flat. They can't just do what they want. They have to abide by the rules of the owner. If I moved into the UK then I would adopt a Cockney accent, obey the laws of the country, and act like the natives in the country. Hypothetically, if I moved to Russia, I'd speak in a Russian accent and learn Russian. I'd also celebrate Russian holidays. Asking someone to assimilate isn't being anti-immigration.

This bit says it all really (no offence), the daily mail is the last place to see the truth, they are almost as bad as fox news with the truth, I'd take most of what is in there (including the comments with a pinch of salt! ), most of the media will always twist the truth or make it look like it is far worse than it is so that they can get more readers!

I'm not sure if you're aware, but the Daily Mail isn't exactly a bastion of responsible, moral or accurate journalism. Hell, they even supported the Nazis ("Hurrah for the Blackshirts!") when they were around.

The Daily Mail is a right-wing breeding ground for racists and fascists. Don't be brainwashed by it. The views aired on the Daily Mail website are not necessarily representative of the normal, non-radicalised free-thinking citizens of Britain. Facebook is a breeding ground for idiots full of opinion but only half an understanding of the problem. I can tell you that most Germans certainly don't despise Merkel; she is highly respected. I'm not sure she'd care if a load of UKIP supporters despised her.
NY Yankee said:

It will take time for the residents to adapt, and mistakes will be made. But what would you have Merkel do? Turn them away? The immigrants are fuel for the economy (construction sector, for building housing, the farming and agriculture sectors for food, milk and so on, the education sector for the culture and knowledge the migrants bring with them, and various other manual trades such as plumbing benefit from the influx of skilled workers). And for anyone saying that each and every immigrant should be working, this fails to take into account the horrors they've been through and the family members lost. Some families won't have anyone able to work for them.

It would be if we got rid of those bloody Pacers.

Immigrants not acknowledging British holidays means I've got a small, local, family-run shop to buy beer from on Christmas Day because I forgot to top up the night before. I don't start talking in a Cockney accent whenever I'm in London so I don't see why they should. There are some failings in the system (see: those awaiting asylum appeals are sometimes subject to atrocious conditions) but on the whole people don't want to come here to kill us, despite what you may read.

A city not too far from me in Germany recently decided not to allow fireworks on New Year's Day because it'd resemble bombs/gunfire to the immigrant population and could accelerate or worsen PTSD. Not a single German complained as far as I'm aware.

Consider other media outlets such as the Independent, BBC or Sky. You'll get a more balanced view than if you get all your news from one place.

A fine example of how immigrants can mix in. It isn't that simple for everyone however.

We can't ignore the problem, but you can't destroy an ideology with bombs. The approach currently being taken is crude and brutal, and only serves to radicalise more people/encourage people to become martyrs against the "evil" West.

I'd respect laws whichever country I was in and I imagine the vast majority of immigrants/natives/whoever does as well.

The problem a lot of people are making is associating the extremists and their actions with Islam and immigrants. British Muslims don't condone terrorism, and neither do immigrants, generally speaking. But I fear, that as we have already seen in America, discrimination or violence out of ignorance towards those we should be protecting is only going get get worse unless the media starts reporting responsibly and challenging extreme right-wing views, of which there are no shortage.

Instead of watching video's on YouTube why not get yourself a passport and an airline ticket and take a flight to London. Then you will see for yourself that people from the Indian Subcontinent are not in the majority. You would also then realise that not everyone in the UK speaks with a Cockney accent!

Three of my children were educated in London and guess what, they don't speak with a Cockney accent!

Are you suggesting that Muslims should not have their own places of worship in the UK? How are you suggesting that Asians and in particular Muslims should go about integrating themselves into British culture?

Clearly you are not from round these parts. Not sure what CNNs agenda is but the Daily Mail, its like British Fox News. Immigrants are stealing you jobs while claiming benefits and are bringing down house prices and giving you cancer and killed Diana and are forcing Sharia law on Banbury. It has little to no relation to the truth whatsoever.

Firstly the comment section of the Daily Mail is slightly worse than YouTube comment sections. It really isn't representative of reality. The rest of it just sounds like rambling conjecture and silliness.

Again, CNN and the Daily Mail gave the impression that Germany turned into Iraq.

Erm, no.

I've watched hundreds of travel videos on YouTube. It seems like for every white Brit, there are three Indians. And there's nothing wrong with that since the Indians speak in Cockney accents and assimilated into the mainstream culture.

Lolwut? Was it a show on Indian restaurants? Must say I love your view of all immigrants must speak Cockney to be British!

Yes, well, it all went silly when the US decided that it needed to go in all guns blazing to destabalise everything it could! Now, sadly, we do have a mess that needs clearing up and how to do that is a big big question.

Yep, thanks, compulsory Cockney is still cracking me up! Well, while we are talking about immigrants assimilating, how is the native American assimilation going?

Just to point out, a ComRes poll for the BBC earlier last year concluded that 27% of British Muslims had sympathy with the motives behind the murderous attacks on Charlie Hebdo personnel in Paris, and 24% disagreed that acts of violence against those who publish images of the Prophet can never be justified.

Sounds like condoning terrorism to me. Although it's a minority, it's a scarily significant one.

) where they demanded that women dress modestly, meaning covering their faces with hijabs. There's nothing wrong with wearing a hijab if you want to do so. I know two Muslims women and they are the nicest people I've ever met. One of them even sang Christmas carols. Nevertheless, they chose to become Muslims. They weren't forced to do so.
You don't cover the face with a hijab - a hijab covers the head and chest. You're thinking of a niqab or burkha. Source: I'm a Muslim. ;)

It's interesting to have a read through the survey itself and see all the questions and how they're answered, including the ones that dont get reported - like the 17% of respondents who don't consider themselves practicing Muslims.
It's also interesting how they phrase some questions; for example using 'I sympathise with' rather than 'I support' because it'll get a bigger positive response, and it's somewhat meaningless since you can sympathise about something without actually supporting it.

The Daily Mail and CNN! No wonder you have been mislead NY Yankee. The collapse of Germany must have happened quickly, it was really quite pleasant and laid back when I visited Berlin last year.

Having had a quick read through all the ranting on this thread it's not surprising that condemnation of the attacks in Germany has been virtually nil whilst ridiculing the messenger and the Daily Mail is seen as far more important.

I actually do condem the attacks and hope the perpertrators will be caught and punished, I realise that is not the view on here but I don't care.

Having had a quick read through all the ranting it's not surprising that condemnation of the attacks in Germany has been virtually nil whilst ridiculing the messenger and the Daily Mail is seen as far more important.

I actually do condem the attacks and hope the perpertrators will be caught and punished, I realise that is not the view on here but I don't care.

There was a report on BBC Breakfast This Morning complaining that the reports had negated to mention who the perpetrators were, or at least the fact they were immigrants.

When they catch them Prinz-Albrecht-Strasse could be reopened to solicit some confessions :p

On the night it all became clear what had happened after 5 days of deliberate news blackout the BBC news gave the story 9 secs and failed to mention what nationality the culprits were, that would be the BBC that so many call impartial and balanced but many call it the broadcasting arm of the Guardian.

You're wasting your time, all people on here want to do is call the Daily Mail all the juvenile things they can think of, we'll see if it's the same when these scum start assaulting women on the streets of this country

Women get assaulted pretty much every day by homegrown scum. Why would it be any worse if it's done by someone from another country?

The Daily Mail is a horrible morally bankrupt newspaper. Anybody who reads it and doesn't bother to fact check any story it publishes is an absolute moron. People mock the Daily Mail for good reason, just as people mock Jeremy Corbyn for good reason!

It doesn't even have a decent crossword (the Mail, not Corbyn.)

Yes, the story is horrible and what happened is morally repugnant, but the idea that a similar incident could happen here is stupid and fearmongering.

BBC said:

People on Arabic-language social media have voiced dismay and anger at the sexual violence against women in Cologne and other German cities on New Year's Eve.

Indications that many of the attackers were North African or Arab in appearance prompt soul-searching, with some alluding to the perception that sexual violence against women is widespread in North Africa and the Middle East.

Many express concern about the possible impact the incidents could have on Germany's perception of migrants and refugees from the regions.

Police in Cologne have stepped up their presence since the assaults
On Twitter, the Arabic-language hashtags #Germany and #Cologne have been used more than 17,000 and 2,500 times.
Twitter user @Osama_Saber voices the fear that the incidents will bring "shame of historic proportions" on all Arabs living in Germany.
'Scumbags'

"I have never felt more respected than I feel here," Facebook user Israa Ragab - an Egyptian living in Germany - writes.
"Every time I watch the TV and hear them saying the suspects could be from North Africa or Arabs I feel so ashamed and disgusted."
Twitter user @LLLLoL00 is blunter: "Every time we try to improve the image of Arabs, a bunch of scumbags just destroys everything!"

Commenting on the arrest of an Iraqi and a Palestinian in relation to sexual harassment allegations on New Year's Even in Berlin, Deutsche Welle Arabic journalist Nahla Elhenawy voices the opinion that such incidents are symptomatic of wider problems relating the treatment of women in the Middle East and some Muslim-majority countries.

"The ugliness of our region is reaching Germany," she tweets.

The attacks have caused uproar in Cologne itself

Many social media users fret that the sexual harassment incidents could lead to a backlash in Germany and elsewhere against liberal policies towards refugees from Syria, such as those espoused by German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

"Will Europe regret receiving people who suffer from religious and political repression?" ‏@Farcry99 tweets.

Another user suggests this could be the beginning of Germany "closing its doors for refugees".
BBC Monitoring has done a report on the social media response the incident has caused.

Not on such a large scale but criminally far worse so you're wrong it's already happened here.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/wor...ultural-difference-is-no-excuse-for-rape.html

In the early hours of 26 October 2014, a group of Libyan cadets, who were stationed at RAF Bassingbourn, ran amok in the centre of Cambridge. Fuelled by alcohol, the cadets roamed the picturesque streets looking for victims. Four women were sexually assaulted. The Libyans exposed themselves, grabbed the women, and put their hands up their skirts. A young guy, who was inebriated after a wedding party, was seized by two of the cadets, Moktar Ali Saad Mahmoud and Ibrahim Abugtila, and raped. Describing the “Arab guys” who attacked him, the victim said, “They were horrendous, they weren’t human. I was trying my hardest and they were like overpowering me. It was horrible. Don’t say anything to my mum.”

Moahmoud and Abugtila were jailed for 12 years apiece; the men who groped the women received shorter terms and will, if the European Convention on Human Rights is willing (don’t hold your breath) be deported at the end of their terms.
