This is the map that accompanies the TFGM page about where a Wayfarer ticket can be used - it's basically anywhere within the zone. The link is to a rail/bus/tram map, there are separate rail maps such as this http://tfgm.com/journey_planning/Documents/PDFMaps/Wayfarer-Rail-diagram.pdf

Parbold is clearly outside the zone of the former, and not included in the latter. But why is Parbold (and Earlstown, Goostrey and Holmes Chapel) marked, when stations outside the zones on other lines aren't?

Am I missing something in that they are part of the Wayfarer zone, or there's a supplement to use them....and if not, why are they on the map at all?

Only asking as I wouldn't mind a day's use of the railways and Parbold would be on that list if it were a valid station!

Anyone clear it up? Thanks!!

Yes, the rail validity is slightly wider than the bus validity.

Ah, interesting, thanks! Doesn't explain why Parbold is on the bus/rail map and not the rail map though - it's shown as a rail station but not a bus route. Odd!!

Parbold is on my rail map, to the west of Chorley , even tho Chorley is not , like Parbold, in Greater Manchester .(yes I use Chorley or sometimes Buckshaw Parkway paying the few £ extra as it has a large free car park !)

It is on the rail map.

Yes it is...top left. Thanks - missed it at first glance, I would have stuck it to the west of the map....but never mind, it's there. Problem solved, Parbold's legal, time for a day out, close thread...thanks everyone!

Not much in Parbold, if truth be told!

Don't understand the confusion. Parbold is OK on rail, though not on bus. Same applies for Holme Chapel and Goostrey - OK on rail, not on bus. All shown in the same way on both maps?

The Wayfarer traditionally included some places outside the GM boundary anyway, whereas other than Hadfield and Glossop (and Rainford Jn absolutely years ago) the other GM rail tickets tended not to.

Yes, it includes the Peak District, and is useful for ramblers or those fancying a Derbyshire pub crawl.

The rail validity doesn't extend to Sankey, while the bus validity does, nor does it include the Wigan-Warrington line whereas the bus validity does include buses between those points.

Not quite so simple - I didn't spot Parbold on the rail-only map (it's tucked away top left where Preston should be!!) so my fault.....but the original query was why is Parbold station (and the others) marked yet it's outside the wayfarer boundary on the bus/rail/tram map.
The answer's been provided (as you say) that you can get the train there but not the bus (which frankly seems daft, but hey) so the stations marked but outside the boundary. But to a quick onlooker it's not immediately obvious seeing as the boundary is so well marked.
So, confusion over!

I think the Wayfarer at £12 which includes peak-time travel in the afternoon is one of the best value tickets in the UK. It can also be used to split and make the Manchester-Sheffield return cheaper; although one must ensure the train stops at the boundary station.

As for thse fancying a pub crawl....

....yup ;)
