A friend has an Off Peak Return from Leicester to St Pancras at £86.50.

Can the entire ticket be excessed before travel to a First Class Super Off Peak Return (£99) or a First Class Off Peak Return (£126)?

The Off Peak Return is Route Any Permitted but bizarrely the 2 First Class options are Route East Midlands Trains only.

Thanks

Yes I think it is possible and I think that they could excess to the Super Off-Peak ticket as well. It is my understanding that in this scenario you excess from what is held to the appropriate first class ticket not to the same type of first class ticket. So if the passenger is travelling at times when the Super Off-Peak is valid then they should be able to excess to that.

I think that is possible, yes.

Thanks Neil. Grateful for a definitive answer. They would prefer to excess to the First Super Off Peak return if possible before travel tomorrow. EMT Customer Services say only a like-for-like upgrade is possible i.e to a First Off Peak return only.

AIUI Off Peak and Super Off Peak are interchangeable in whole-ticket excess terms, because on some routes the Off Peak is the former regulated Saver and on others the Super Off Peak is that ticket. It would be different if travel had occurred.

If they still refuse or I am wrong, as there has been no travel it would be cheaper to refund (less £10 admin fee) and buy the Super Off Peak if that is suitable.

I agree that an Off-Peak ticket can be excessed to a more expensive Super Off-Peak ticket, if origin and destination remain the same. I did this recently at Leeds Travel Centre and have previously used Bristol Temple Meads Travel Centre.

My experience is that ticket office staff and train guards are more likely to give accurate advice than a train company's customer service centre.
