I notice that it has been a few years since there was any intake for Darlington trainees but wondered if anyone was in the know about any future vacancies opening up in light of the new contract? York is on the limit of a commute as is Newcastle so Darlington is ideally placed without uprooting family.

Recruitment for Darlington is usually done internally. There have been a few drivers started in the last couple of years. A few currently in training and they have have recently advertised internally to fill roles for new services. I don't think they require external recruitment as they have quite a lot of applicants from various roles based at Middlesbrough Depot, Newcastle Depot and Heaton Maintenance Depot.

Thanks, was that for trainer drivers or other roles? I'm specifically looking for a driver role but would consider something else to get me on the ladder.

Very interesting I know internal candidates who still haven't had a response from recruitment that closed at the end of March. I also know Aslef are trying to encourage Northern to take recently redundant freight drivers. Very suprised this has been advertised, they must want a bigger selection of candidates to choose from or previous applicants not up to scratch.

How bizarre, I was only thinking of dropping them an email about it yesterday. I'm on it!

I'm amazed that one's like leeds came up twice even though they had over 2000 applications.

I'm hoping york comes up.

Again, Northern employees fed bull and kept in the dark. Recruitment is a joke. I know internal applicants have waited over 2 months for updates but nothing apart from to say still shortlisting, then there are talks they are interviewing freight drivers for all the positions, so why go external. Spin after spin after spin. So glad I have my opportunity, feel sorry for those who are still waiting.

Just wondering if anyone else put in for the Drivers job at Darlington which closed week before last and have heard anything and/or knows anything regarding the vacancy. I do realise it's only been two weeks since closing but thought I'd put feelers out lol.

Many thanks guys.

I've not heard anything yet, NEHS was yours to say that you had passed the sift?

There's 45 interviews for 6 jobs at Darlo apparently, not sure out of the 45 how many are internal.

I know nearly every guard at Middlesbrough put in for it and so did a few from Newcastle.

Will be tough to get in from externally as a trainee now I'd imagine.

I know 4 of us at TPE passed all of the assessments for the trainee posts here. I believe all 4 applied to Northern for Darlington so I'd hope we wouldn't be far off with the assessment passes already. Good luck to all who applied- it is difficult

Anyone any idea what proportion of those interviewed are likely to be put through to the assessment centre if there are just 6 jobs going?

Thank you in advance

For those who are successful in both the interview and assessment. Are the positions decided on the assessment scores or reverted back to interview scores?

Many thanks

I'm pretty sure that the unions have ensured an internal candidate will be chosen over external if they have both passed all stages

Just to show you the stats, in the past 3 years there's been 9 drivers taken on at Darlington. 1 qualified, 7 internal trainees, 1 external trainee.

Chaser, I know there were at least 2 externals interviewed for it last week but no idea about internals.

Some externals seemingly were notified quite quickly about assessment days which were this Monday and Tuesday. There must be more dates for assessments though as they were still interviewing Friday I believe.

I applied as an external and had an interview on Friday. Got the bad news today that I wasn't successful in reaching the next stage.

At least I was one of the lucky externals who managed to get a interview I suppose..

Maybe next time I might get the opportunity to try a driver assessment.

Really?! You'd have thought they would go on whoever had the highest overall score. Thanks for the info anyway :)

I think only 4 got sent for assessment out of internals, I know some externals were at assessments Monday Tuesday. Internals not sure.

I think if you haven't been for interview it's a definite no now.

If you've been for interview and external or internal and not heard it's also very highly likely to be a no.

Good luck all those going for assessment.

Apparently it's 6 drivers they want.
