I watched The Little Vampire at my sister's house the other day.
It's a kiddy film about an American kid in Scotland becoming involved with vampires after having a vision. Alice Kringe (Borg Queen) sadly had an extremely minor role, the story was weak. But it wasn't too bad.

A Scanner Darkly - the first time I watched this I found the rotoscoping so distracting that it spoilt the film for me however I thought I'd give it another go and this time I was able to ignore the rotoscoping and found it a fascinating sci-fi thriller with some very funny moments. 7.0/10

Striking Distance - Bruce Willis in a very run-of-the-mill cop story the only novel element is that he is a river cop so there is a boat chase, with a miscast Sarah Jessica Parker - 5.0/10

I'm genuinely shocked. I thought that the Rotoscoping was a risky technique but fitted quite nicely with the theme of the film and the authors rather unique personality. You come across as a Sci-Fi fan, based on some of your questions) and I would have thought that this film was right up your alley.

last film I watched. TMNT: Out of the Shadows

Not as good as the first one but it ticked all the boxes for a half term movie. Everyone was there this time; bebop and rocksteady, Krang, Shredder, Casey Jones, and even Baxter Stockman. Personally I think they tried to cram too much in and the story felt dragged out. Great visuals but little else. No character had any real screen time and it detracted from any real storyline or character development.

I wouldn't recommend it unless you were a die hard Turtle fan or have kids. Even then at a push.

4/10

Well I gave it 7.0/10 which is pretty good, I reserve 8 & 9 for something exceptional, perhaps I should have said I accepted the rotoscoping rather than ignored it.

We tried to find something on TV on Saturday lastnight and ended up putting The Appearing on, it claimed to star Dean Cain (From the Superman TV series!), the film was new (2014) but was low film quailty although that was the least of my concerns. The story was utterly boring, little happens, the acting was also poor. I never like ghost films (except Ghostbusters etc) so I might be a bit unfair here.
0/5

I also saw Back to the Future 2, where a trip to the future turns into a nightmare when they return to the present to discover a Trump lookalike has wrecked the town and his older self used the Delorean in the future.
I still don't understand why he returned the car rather than break it, but it's a perfect film as are the others in the series.
5/5
I'll also recommend Rick & Morty cartoon series for fans of these films 4.5/5

Primer - A couple of engineers inadvertently build a time machine in their garage, sounds a bit daft doesn't it? Primer has many flaws, at times it feels like a physics lecture and the sequence of events is difficult to follow (although that tends to be the case when dealing with time travel). However when you consider that it was made on an estimated budget of $7000, the actors were all family and friends of the director and writer Shane Carruth and it's dealing with an extremely problematic subject it's remarkable just how well it works. It's certainly puzzling (I believe there is a diagram somewhere online that attempts to clarify the sequence of events) and probably not to everyone's taste but I much prefer this to most of the Hollywood blockbusters. I recommend this film to anyone who likes intelligent sci-fi and is willing to be challenged rather than merely entertained. I'm sure there must be more films like this out there; the difficulty is finding them. 8.0/10

I should add that this is the third time I've watched Primer (and I'm still puzzled by it) which must be some kind of recommendation.

Jurasic World was good don't you think?
I just didn't understand the marine dinosaur reaching the main shopping street at the end. But otherwise I loved it. 4.8/5

Anyway today at my sister's house we watched 2 films today.

The Do-Over was first, it's a Netflix only film so we could only watch it there. It's very low standard even for a Adam Sandler film. It was utter rubbish and was not funny at all, despite the pathetic attempts. (-1)/5

The Circle was the second film, it starts off without explanation with a load of people on some sort of Russian Roulette game they are forced to play and are killed off one by one. It's a unique film and despite appearing silly it wasn't bad. One of the best films set in a single room I've seen in ages. 3/5

Yeah I did enjoy it. If I remember it was shown as being thear near the start as you could see it through a window like an aquarium shot I think

The Boat That Rocked (2009. dir. Richard Curtis, with Philip Seymour Hoffman, Tom Sturridge, Bill Nighy, Rhys Ifans, Chris O'Dowd, Nick Frost and Kenneth Branagh)

A group of ramshackle DJs broadcast from a pirate radio station in the 1960s. It feels like a Curtis film, but it isn't all there. Great soundtrack though, and Bill Nighy is great in it - I have to say that Chris O'Dowd was a revelation too. A solid 4/5.

Troll Hunter - A Norwegian film with subtitles about a man who works for a government department responsible for controlling trolls. I don't like "found footage" films but on the positive side the trolls weren't presented as supernatural and there was an attempt to provide a scientific background to their unusual characteristics and behaviour (although there was a rather incongruous religious element), the trolls were quite impressive and the scenery was absolutely gorgeous. 6.0/10

Watched Interstellar again recently and really enjoyed it, can't explain the fact I despised it the first time I saw it, must have been in a funny mood.

Tideland - Directed by Terry Gilliam Tideland is about a young girl's retreat into fantasy after the deaths of her junkie parents. The young actor Jodelle Ferland, who was 11 years old at the time, carries the film almost entirely on her shoulders Her acting is remarkable as are her conversations with her four dolls' heads, for which she did all the different voices and gave each one its own unique character. 7.0/10

I may well do, thanks.

Minions -not gonna rank it as it's pretty much unclassifiable. It depends what you want in a movie; a witty/moving sophisticated experience, or fart jokes.

I just watched The Matrix, for what I reckon is about the 10th time. Even after 17 years it is still a truly excellent movie - every frame is beautifully composed, and even the special effects still seem pretty decent. 5/5.

Tomorrow Never Dies - great James Bond flick with some good one-liners and moments from both main and supporting actors and actresses including

Yeoman, send to Admiralty: "Have been torpedoed by Chinese MiGs. Sinking." Give them our position. Right. Abandon ship.

and

Captain of HMS Bedford: "To Royal Navy Task Group: We also have the unknown ship on our screens. We will not fire unless it turns towards China. Until then, she's yours. Good hunting."

Commodore of Task Force: Now, captain, whatever the hell that thing is, sink it.

Captain of HMS Bedford: Right, sir. PWO? Is that echo too weak for missile lock?

Principal Warfare officer: Yes, sir.

Captain of HMS Bedford: Right. We'll do it the old-fashioned way.

Upon which, they fire an illumination round for the 4.5 on the bow and then pound away with it at an almost invisible to radar stealth ship - and whilst at max revolutions and doing it manually

Its not a lot of action, true, but ANY naval gunfire from the boys in the Grey Funnel Line is always welcome!

Megamind - another enjoyable animation from Dreamworks, not spectacular but a decent 90 minutes entertainment; if only there had been some naval gunfire. 7.0/10

That would have spiced things up, certainly... The Grey Funnel Line are the only ones in the world that still have "Prepare for broadside" in the list of orders for naval gunfire - just in case we need it!

#

Yangtse Incident - classic British film staring solid British acting and plenty of naval gunfire at the end when blasting their way through the blockades

The Long Good Friday - what an amazing film, riveting from the beginning to the final, unforgettable scene, Bob Hoskins and Helen Mirren are brilliant. - 9.0/10

Two this weekend:

The Hateful 8 - Many members wont like it due to bad language and trademark Tarantino gratuitous violence but it is a very good film. There is a deep message in there.

Captain America - The winter solider. Standard comic book superhero film. I really quite like them

The Long Good Friday - what an amazing film, riveting from the beginning to the final, unforgettable scene, Bob Hoskins and Helen Mirren are brilliant. - 9.0/10

A superb film. The final scene is very clever. The look on Hoskins face changes from rage to acceptance as the realisation of his end dawns on him.

The Mafia? I've sh@@ 'em!

Today I saw Would You Rather. A selection of people desperate for money are gathered to an evil snob's house unknowingly to play a harsh game of choice. Jeffrey Combs (Weyoun/Brunt/Tiron of DS9, & Shran of ENT) is perfect in his role as usual.

The Secret of NIMH, an animated film in the 80s... quite had a dark tone into it, dealing with death, greed, and human instinct (survival of the fittest), etc. 8/10

I Origins. An interesting sci fi film. No fleets of spaceships or alien planets if that is what you are expecting though (Not that I have anything against that).

Also just watched Straight Outta Compton. Not in to Rap (Am a metalhead) but it was a very interesting, gritty and entertaining film about NWA. Also just for the record the actors James Coburn and Kevin Costner are also from Compton!
