Well, it's having something of a baptism of fire! 12 late by East Croydon, and that included not stopping at Balcombe. Is it down to lots of interest in the train, or something else?

I'm afraid the fears about the seats are correct.

Hard, no elbow room at all if sitting two a breast (window seat too close to train body), and also footwell intrusion on the window seat

Sitting two a breast for an hour journey would be grim.

Get the negatives out of the way, and they are nice! Nowhere to put my coffee though

At least there's more space to move your legs in to the isle if you're on the isle seat.

Will say the passengers I've spoken to like it. Seems to be spitting reactions just like the 377 and 387 seem to. Ie passengers lover the new stock, not so on here.

Held for a late running attachment at Haywards Heath and then regulated ever since. Its hard for train do do anything when faced with red signals.

Intrusive trunking

Due to walls being thinner.

Looks like it has a flat top for resting foot on though.

Pretty muc what 50% of passengers are doing.

Short video clip of it running through Wivelsfield this morning.

https://youtu.be/2sVX2H4uMlo

Apologies for the slightly shaky hand - I was getting very cold and wet at the time!

Ah that was you there. Look forward to seeing that when I get home later.

Is the trunking in steel?

Might be able to make a non-slip mat in my garage, with magnets to attach.

Magnets don't work (at least one on my name badge didn't).

Magnets don't stick to Austenitic Stainless Steels which is probably what you would use to make that cover...

It's running well late, congestion caused by problems on the west coastway I guess.

Blimey, you're not wrong. Just been checking progress on RTT.

  • 1B18 10:02 Brighton to London Bridge: Departed 2 mins late, omitted Balcombe, arrived 16 mins late.
  • 1B21 11:12 London Bridge to Brighton: Departed 18 mins late, omitted Three Bridges, Haywards Heath and Burgess Hill and arrived 47 mins late.
  • 1B28 12:32 Brighton to London Bridge: Departed 33 mins late, currently 37 mins late

Not the best of first days! :(

Class 377/5, if we ask you when they're being introduced now, will the trains be withdrawn until we stop asking?

Well you remember the 377/5 withdrawal don't you? :D

Train was initially delayed behind a Southern service. As a result as it got to London it was regulated to death. Didn't help it had no platform to go into at Brighton either.

Last service in today's diagram cancelled between London Bridge and East Croydon due to late running of the previous services in the diagram. It's turned at East Croydon back to Brighton.

Due to walls being thinner.

in reponse to that the seats should actually start a few inches (3 or 4) away from the side wall, funilly enough, the width of an armrest, because there is also nowhere for your shoulder to go, unless your shoulder width is the same or less than the width of the seat (!!!!!)

This wouldnt significantly reduce the aisle width.

Try and sit two-abreast n those seats and you will see what i mean.

I like the P.I.S and the chime!

Does anyone have any observations around certain aspects of the new units:
- acceleration
- ambient noise levels when travelling at speed (not that there seems to have been much of that, today)
- speed of unloading/loading at stations

wasnt much chance to accelerate today!!!!

Certainly it was better for luggage at gatwick airport than even 377s/387s.

Better ride quality than Electrostars....(but we knew that already).

I didn't like the unit at all. The new smell wasn't particularly pleasant, the seats were too hard, I got motion sickness as well. Probably due to feeling claustrophobic in an airline seat (in fairness, the same thing happens in a GWR HST). I moved to a bay of 4 but it didn't really help so I bailed out at East Croydon

The guard on the 11:12 ex London Bridge was proudly announcing the new train, and at least 2 passengers in front heading for Gatwick said at least they've started as they mean to go on!

Before anyone says it, I'm not a new train dinosaur. I really quite like the 350s out of Euston, and the 377s aren't too bad either.

Guard? Presumably you mean the driver. The introduction of 700s onto certain Southern routes is at least partly why there is a dispute.

Guard? Surely the driver, or a management bod from GTR supervising the first day.

Was there a ticket check during the journey?
