Doubt it, mainly because you only have one motor coach for a 5 car set.

And as for locomotive haulage, whilst originally fitted with connections for standard ETH it never worked properly and was removed and so unfortunately the only locomotives they properly work with are either bagpipe equipped 33/73's and they are hardly the most modern or powerful locomotives available.

Except for GBRfs re-tractioned 73s of course. And I'm sure what can be taken out can be made better and refitted, nothing's really impossible in this day and age.

As for the maintenance issues, surely that's more down to Southern than anything, don't remember them having as many issues when Bomo maintained them.

Would fixing the ETH stuff on a 442 involve a lot of work (eg gutting it) and cost a ton of money?

The re-tractioned GBRf examples are conventional 1000V (nominal) ETS fitted whereas the original Class 73 delivered 750V (nominal) as did the Class 33 - their ETS being essentially a replacement for third rail.

I also seem to remember, that the JA (73/0) Class 73s would deliver ETS on diesel, but the JB (73/1) locomotives wouldn't, they would only provide ETS when operating on third rail, but I could be mistaken or have the sub-classes round the wrong way.

Yes, because the Southern fitters were told that each unit had its own quirks (i.e.: mods), that the Bournemouth staff had got to know over the years.
Hence, it the manuals were of limited use!!

It was 37800 with 442 423 behind it. This was the first 442 I ever went on. Shame to see this go..

Yes, six 442s will be retained until 2018:
-two 442s will be retained for the Eastbourne-London Bridge-Eastbourne peak-time services;
-two 442s will be retained for the Brighton-London Bridge-Brighton peak time services;
-two 442s will be retained as spares, in case either of the above pair of 442s develop problems.

I'm sure there will be a rotation of units so that the two spare aren't just locked away for a couple of years to gather dust if they're not needed.

Will these be repainted into Southern livery?

The livery is Europhoenix. That company had considered exporting their 37s, but fortunately they found work with ROG.

I've just thought: will the Eastbourne-London Victoria-Eastbourne Saturday summer specials, operated by a pair of 442s, be running this year?

I think, from memory, they run from Eastbourne at around 08:20, arriving into Victoria just before 10, and then, on the return, leaving Victoria at around 17:20 and arriving back into Eastbourne at around 18:40.

Will they start to send them soon to a "long term" storage site until they get scrapped?

Where do locos/units now tend to get sent for long term storage (so that they're not clogging up a TOCs/FOCs yard?

I don't but they could as the diagrams they do are 2 journeys and these are Monday to Friday only.

Wherever there is space to be honest, in recent years it's been places like Eastleigh works which have plenty of empty sidings as well as old MoD facilities such as Long Marston which don't see nearly the amount of traffic they used to.

I know. They're kept in Eastbourne Sidings over the weekend so they could easily do that Saturday run this year.
In fact, if GTR management were clever, they would run a special on Sunday as well; there would be many more paths compared to Saturday, so much more room for manoeuvre!

As mentioned elsewhere on here, mainly depots, works and MOD or ex MOD bases. The DRS 47 fleet ended up at MOD Longtown, and many third rail units were sent for storage and scrapping at MOD Caerwent in Wales back in the early 2000s (I think this branch line has lost its mainline connection).

They're not clever enough to resource the regular weekend service, so adding in extras seems ill-advised at best

The path between Keymer Junction and London Victoria has been "lost" to the 4th Brighton to Victoria service every hour.

In theory it may be possible to squeeze another path though, but it hasn't been done.

Doing this would however increase mileage and wear on the units and decrease available time for maintenance.

Why would they need too. It's just additional cost, and as GTR get no revenue from ticket sales, there is no incentive.
