It was something to do with surface run-off getting into the Dee and Don and SEPA having a fit as a result. Not really my thing, is road building, so don't know if it's right or not.

That was just a 1 week stoppage after some particularly heavy rainfall lead to a lot of muddy water entering watercourses.

Benhar Road is a brilliant example of what we can and indeed need to continue to do for local communities who might be near a railway line but who seldom use it.

The previous bridge was a single track structure with no pavements, just wide enough for a car or truck to cross it single file. It was traffic light controlled and a real nuisance for the local population.

North Lanarkshire Council and Network Rail got together, pooled their resources and instead of a like for like replacement, Shotts gets a brand new single carriageway bridge with two pavements (joined up to the existing pavements) and the old traffic lights have been removed.

I hope we see more of this as electrification in Scotland pushes deeper into rural areas where a small improvement to a bridge like this can be a large boost to the local community.

The enabling works for the replacement of 285/125 WEST CALDER on the A71 were due to begin last Friday (haven't been past yet).

It's looking like a complex project. With no suitable diversion route for what is a major road the plan is to build a temporary road through the local primary school's playing field to connect up with a new access road and rail bridge being constructed by West Lothian Council as part of a new Secondary school.

Add to that site investigation works have uncovered evidence of possible unrecorded shallow coal workings that will require remediation works.

The plans for the new bridge are on the council's planning portal link,as the some details on the mine remediaton works link.

285/126 PARKHEAD NT0244063580 Parapets Only?

This was a footbridge that is currently being replaced by West Lothian Council by a road bridge to provide access to a new secondary school. As I mentioned in the last post it will also be used as a temporary diversion for traffic whilst the bridge at West Calder is done.

Re Aberdeen-Inverness line, I noticed this in the Scotland Route Study:

...Concerns were also raised that electrification of the line had not been included. The current proposed timetable for electrification anticipates that this line would not be electrified until after 2043...

Well, Dundee to Aberdeen electrification is penciled in for CP8 (ends 2034) so there's no point in wiring Aberdeen-Inverness any time before that as it would leave an island of electrification.

Once the wires reach Aberdeen, it's a question of if Perth-Inverness or Aberdeen-Inverness should take priority as I don't think NR would have the capacity to tackle both at the same time. It looks like they've decided to prioritise the former over the latter.

There will need to be a strategy to electrify Aberdeen to Inverness to allow electric stock to transfer if either route south is blocked.

Naturally. I was just saying there's a reason that A-I electrification isn't happening much sooner. CP8 is the earliest it would make sense.

I thought headspans like the ECML had been discredited (whcih is what that looks like)?

It's all discussed in the Glasgow QS thread, but needed for listed building purposes and they're only twin track headspans so any disruption from dewirement (which in itself is very unlikely due to linespeeds) will be minimised.

Presumably the wind effect is also minimal within the confines of Glasgow Queen Street?

In relation to the two pantographs I should have said: a terminal station with short platforms.

I see one of the Queen Street High Level platforms is wired now (Platform 2, I think).

Glasgow Queen Street tunnel to reopen early

Scotland

Glasgow Queen Street station tunnel is to reopen one day earlier than planned, ScotRail has confirmed.

Services were due to restart from Queen Street High Level station on the morning of August 8, following completion of the 20 week project. Services will now begin to be reintroduced from Sunday 7 August.

Phil Verster, managing director of the ScotRail Alliance said: “I’m delighted to confirm that we will be able to reopen the Queen Street tunnel a day ahead of schedule.

“This has been an extraordinarily complex job. Our people have been working round the clock, often in really challenging circumstances, to get this job done. This has been one of the most significant pieces of work ever carried out on our railway. That we have managed to do it while still keeping people moving is testament to the hard work and dedication of our staff.

“I’m incredibly grateful to our customers for the patience and understanding that they have shown over the course of the last five months. The work that we have been doing at Queen Street will deliver amazing benefits for our customers in the future. Our new faster, longer greener trains will be arriving in just over a year’s time, meaning more seats, shorter journey times with less impact on our environment.”

Transport Minister, Humza Yousaf, said: “I am pleased that the work in Queen Street tunnel has completed on schedule and, like all rail passengers, I am looking forward to the resumption of normal services. I would like to thank the public for their patience during the closure.”

The return of trains to the station’s High Level platforms, paves the way for work to begin to transform Glasgow Queen Street station. Subject to the relevant permissions, work will begin to redevelop the entire station later this year, and is due for completion in 2019.

EDIT: Also, twitter says "Speed over new S&C in #QSTunnel will be 25mph That is up from previous 15mph limit on the old S&C units that were in place"

Another press release about another Shotts line bridge:

http://www.networkrailmediacentre.c...to-find-out-more-about-cleland-bridge-rebuild

Network Rail will shortly start work on the railway bridge on Biggar Road, Cleland, as part of wider work on the Shotts line ahead of the electrification of the route by 2019.

The project team will host a community drop in event between 4pm and 7pm on Wednesday 10th August in the Senior Citizen Centre, Main St, Cleland, to give local residents a chance to find out about the work, what is happening, and when.

Work on the five-month programme to replace the bridge deck and raise the height of the parapets gets underway on the 8th August and will see Biggar Road close for the duration of works to enable the project to be delivered safely.

Pedestrian access will be maintained at all times, either over the existing structure or on a temporary bridge that will be installed ahead of the demolition of the bridge deck.

Network Rail is carrying out bridge replacements at 17 locations and increasing the height of 10 existing bridge parapets (side walls) ahead of the electrification of the Shotts line. This is to create sufficient space to allow overhead electrification cables to be installed safely under bridges.
