If you're in Harrogate and fancy treating yourself then I can thoroughly reccomend Wynnstay House. A short walk from the town centre, it's one of the best B&Bs I've stayed in - fantastic rooms, amazingly friendly hosts and one of the best breakfasts I've had. You're best off booking direct for the best rates.

NEWCASTLE: Travelodge New Bridge Street - disgusting and to be avoided at ALL costs.

More disgusting than normal ? - I take it this one has not had the "Travelogical" makeover :p

Whats up , is it full of hookers ?

I could do with knowing a cheap place in Inverness. Not too worried about high quality: warm and dry is enough. Any recommendations?
Dalmore, 101 Kenneth Street.
Stayed here about 8 years running in the 1990s, looking at TA it's still going. Comfy and good breakfast.

Oh good, someone else who dislikes Travelodge! We should all start a club...

Any good recommendations out there for Norwich ladies and gents? Don't need it yet but I have got need to make trips over there later this year.

Nearest to the station - Premier Inn (Nelson Hotel), Holiday Inn (next to the football ground). There's another Holiday Inn to the south of the city but its a fair distance from the station.

There's another Premier Inn about 10-15 minutes walk away on Duke Street

For anybody planning on booking a hotel in Newcastle:

The Gate Premier Inn is good, so is the Holiday Inn Express on St James' Boulevard, neither are too far from the station and I'd recommend both of those.

Please please tell us other members where these places are so that they show up when we do a search of the location ???

Its like saying the weather is wet here, without telling us the location !!

Can the editors /moderators rectify this please?

Today's rant over ....:D:D:D

Without knowing the actual answer, it would be a safe bet to be Norwich as the previous poster asked for recommendations in Norwich!

I think you are right; Google produces a Nelson Hotel in Norwich, and a Duke Street.

I didn't even think of Google, I was working on logic. It's getting a bit boring reading posts across all different threads where someone clearly hasn't read the preceding posts/entire thread and then has an avoidable rant had they read the preceding posts.

Back to topic, wondering if anyone can recommend a good campsite on the Freedom of the south west map? Maybe one near a station in the Dorset direction and another in the most north west limits of the FOSW zone, so towards Bristol/Gloucester areas?

My complaint or rant from a few posts ago was to do with the fact that if you do a search for, in this case Norwich , then a post WITHOUT the word Norwich somewhere in the heading or text is meaningless if you are looking for accommodation in Norwich as it will not show up, regardless if it is mentioned in a previous post.

Have you tried using http://www.station-stays.co.uk? Over 1000 places to stay within 15 minutes walk of a railway station, and all listed in alphabetical order.

Thanks for that info, dorsetman. I doubt if I would have found that website.

He mentions it often enough :D

Needs to keep an eye on the links though. I looked at five places today and 2 of the links were invalid.

Edit: One was Carey's Guesthouse in Wick. Can't remember the other.

Edit: Unicorn Inn, Hampton Loade.

Thanks for that. We do a link-checker regularly but also rely on users to keep us posted with new suggestions and broken links.

My initial look was for suitable accommodation for the Bo'ness and Kinneil railway in or near Falkirk /Linlithgow. I see theres a good selection doing a web search , including the usual Travelodge and Premier Inns.

I stayed at Hub by Premier Inn at Edinburgh recently. On New Market Street about 5 min walk from Waverley and just off the Royal Mile.

£52 for the night plus £6.95 for breakfast.

Room very high tech and compact, but high quality fittings and very comfy bed. Bit cosy for 2, but ideal on your own. The standard Premier Inn next door was £105.

Ideal base if you're doing an ALR or a Spirit of Scotland Rover.

Great Yarmouth:

Can thoroughly recommend: http://www.kilbrannanguesthouse.co.uk/

The owners Gary and Julie are fantastic, welcome cakes, fresh milk in your room daily, less than 2 mins from seafront. Breakfasts always freshly cooked and good sized portions.

If you are going by train, then if you let them know your arrival time, they will pick you up free of charge. They have a normal 5 seater car, so can take up to 4 people at a time.
They can also take you back to the station, but after breakfast has finished, so I would allow getting the 0917 class 37s or later back out.

A few reviews:

Travelodge Liverpool Central The Strand

Standard refurbished Travelodge, a Tesco Express located underneath the hotel which is around a couple minute walk from James Street station. Tad bit noisy with road noise (even on the rear of the hotel) plus a smoke detector which had a random flashing light which flashed every so many minutes.

Rooms for You, Leyton, London:

Located around a 5 minute walk from Leyton station on the Central Line, next to a large 24 hour Asda, however that is pretty much the only good part. Seemed to be shared houses hired out for Cash only, however the bathroom itself was filthy, no towels (or soap). The room itself was basic (a bed & wardrobe), however it seemed to have a very thick 'depth of Russian Winter' duvet. The 'curtain' was a bit of rag stuck on a pole in the window, and even with the window closed the noise from the endless traffic on the A12 meant only heavy sleepers need apply.

But on a semi-good note, it wasn't the usual hard-as-nails memory foam mattress. Personally it is a place to avoid, I only selected it as it was one of the cheapest located close to Stratford (rather than a room in Acton way or down Croydon).

A fairly standard Premier Inn with a few exceptions, parking is limited and we had to be directed to another car park about 1/4 mile away. The Premier Inn car park also has a fee however I cannot remember exactly what it was. In addition the restaurant is not on the Ground Floor as it is usually, instead it is located on the 5th floor, giving views of the skyline. The last thing that is worth pointing out is that my window was on the 3rd floor and had a direct lookout of the railways tracks bellow, which is quite good if you want to spot different trains coming through.

I think I know the Premier Inn, as I've walked pass it a couple times on route to St Marys Stadium. Sounds like an interesting restaurant on the 5th floor

For anyone doing a Blackpool trams bash*, having just spent a week in the Metropole on the front at North Pier while the building itself does require a bit of TLC it's not in that bad a condition considering it's right on the promenade catching all the winter storms and the service and food are first rate. The chefs certainly know what they are doing. Price isn't too bad, rooms are generous and the curtains actually keep light out at night.

*Either as a quick one or two nighter or in combination with a family holiday.

Your experience seems to be at odds with Trip Advisor. I know it's subjective, but two recent reviews stating there were ashtrays in no smoking rooms would have me moving on tot eh next hotel in double quick time.

The rooms in which smoking is permitted are all on the 3rd floor and are clearly signed on the doors; the lower floors are smoke free. In fact I took an uncharacteristic gamble and booked a 3rd floor room after doing a personal recce in back January and the room, although a smoking designated room, did not smell of smoke at all ( some smell was evident in the corridor but nowhere near as strong as you might expect ).

Do remember that people are many times more likely to complain than heap praise on anywhere or anything these days.

An ashtray accidentally placed in a non-smoking room ( easily done if the staff are following a training checklist ) would not encourage people to smoke in that room as those requesting such rooms are not likely to be smokers in the first place.

PS No, I am not on a commission or any other incentive from the hotel company! I do have one or two gripes about the place, one in particular being that they do not have a newspaper delivery service.
