Unofficially there's a lot of nods and winks between train crew. Officially you get 75% off on other TOCs, on spur of the moment journeys a fair percentage of guards may choose to waive the fee (but it's on their back if revenue etc jump the train)

Do you get a card for direct family as well or do you have to be with them?

Spouse/Partner plus dependent children. They get leisure travel benefits and don't have to be with you to use them.

Spouse/partner and legal dependants under 16 get one each for LEISURE travel only, they must not commute on it.

Dependents get a card whilst they are in education and can be used for school commute and leisure.

Partners (wife/husband) get a card for leisure only.

I think there is a card for long term partners too but its limited to a couple of years together and you must provide proof. I think mine was 2yrs together and I sent in our council tax form as proof.

Most TOC's offer some form of discounted season ticket for those who travel on other TOC's

You write the date in the box - so you can easily choose when to use them, and you should get new ones each year.

The boxes for Swt staff on VTEC are not contractually the same as boxes that staff who joined the railway before 1996 have.

If Swt changes hands next year from stagecoach to first group then we will lose the VTEC free travel boxes and the unlimited east Midlands free travel. They are only available because stagecoach either fully run (Swt and emt) or almost fully run (VTEC) those tocs.

If first group win, then presumably Swt travel will be based on first group.

Dependants cannot use their SWT Travel Card for free travel to/from a place of education. But they can obtain a 'Priv' rate season ticket, at 75% off.

That must vary company to company, my partner's Arriva one states education or leisure purposes. Although, they never ask what you're using it for

It does vary by company. They may not ask, but if somebody does notice it and report it, it could lead to the withdrawal of travel facilities, so it's certainly not recommended.

Don't forget the Stagecoach share plan as well.

Although bear in mind that this would all change if First Group win the franchise.

Don't know if First run a similar scheme but at least one gets to keep all the existing shares (including subsidised ones), should the unimaginable happen.

No idea if true but heard a rumour that the announcement is scheduled for tomorrow.

There is also a Friends & Family scheme where you get 8 tickets each year you can give to anyone to travel anywhere on SWT for £10 standard class or £20 first class. You simply book online with the journey details and they post them within 7 days. I think the return is valid for one month from the outward journey, allowing your friend/family to go on say a long weekend to the coast or a couple of weeks holiday flying from Southampton Airport, for example.

ATOC make no reference to time spent together on their website now, merely that you must be married/in a civil partnership/co-habiting.

With the VTEC thrown in last year and the emt, im beginning to think I'd be happy for stagecoach to hold onto Swt. I don't think first group would be any greater as an ultimate employer and apart from gwr, don't really see much good for travel benefits....... especially for non-safeguarded staff.

No reciprocal travel on other First Group companies either, contrary to common practice with other transport groups, just some pitiful boxes.

You say pitiful, but it accounts to 20 days free travel on other First TOCs. Granted it's not unlimited but it's still quite good.

Out of interest, do you know of anyone who uses all their First boxes?
