One idea was to keep the newspaper and throw away the 317. But to be fair they seem to perform quite well on the 18.18 Liverpool St to Ipswich whenever I've caught it.
Good idea. Then passengers can enjoy a true 'Metro' service.

A thought.... The minimum unit will be a 3 car for 'Regionals' with some 4 cars, I am not sure how much havoc this will cause to the timetable, there will be capacity issues at terminal stations such as Ipswich & Norwich, currentlu we can have 3 or 4 different services in a platform, but as they are made up of 153's and 156's they 'fit' convert those to a minimum 3 car, and we will run of of space very quickly !

The units are bi-mode, they can run on 25kV OLE and path comfortably amongst the pure EMU services.

The existing timetable and the way in which DMU services terminate are likely to change radically to enable the step-up in capacity and frequency which can be provided with the new fleet.

With the increase in length of the coaches, the capacity of Ipswich will be radically different. The current A/B/C of plat 2, 3 & 4 is going to change as they are for 4 car trains at the current length. If the London-Ipswich trains are put through to Norwich that will give another space for the Anglia regional services. But I agree with Philip there is a huge reshuffle and rediagram coming for the entire network.

Great Yarmouth-Stansted Airport with around a 5 minute turnaround at Norwich would be an efficient use of a unit if it can be pathed on the single line sections from Brundall/Reedham. Also at Ipswich the East Suffolk & Peterborough services have fairly long & wasteful layovers which has long been talked about to increase frequency. The Peterborough states that most will run to/from Colchester so pan-up at Stow. Norwich suffers from so many arrivals/departures in the xx:30-xx:00 period with next to nothing in the other half hour.

The good thing about that operation of Norwich is that most arrivals have good connections to most departures. Very 'Taktfahrplan'.

Not just Norwich. There are many connections to consider, some more important than others.

It will be interesting to see who the winners and losers are with a new timetable. For the first time in living memory costs don't appear to be the only priority, so maybe a user friendly timetable has been devised with a more flexible unit plan.

We shall have to be patient, it will be a while before the detail emerges. But you can bet only the good bits will be in the press release.

If I read it right the IC units are fixed formations (12), so they could be hourly, then maybe use the Regional / Surburban units to fill in the other half hour, could have a 3 way split / attach ? for example: detach Colchester for Clacton, Ipswich for Lowestoft, and the remaining unit Yarmouth via Norwich ?

Look forward to that falling apart when we get the first broken rail at Colchester ;)

But the GE units will be 5 car Bombardier trains with the Anglia stock being Stadler so I'm not exactly sure how you think that could work.

Are we going to see platform extensions to fit fifteen car-trains, then - or are the cars themselves becoming longer...?

With 9/10 units in traffic with 10% faster end to end times the Stadler units will easily cove a half hourly fast service to/from Norwich with others covering the slow/off route extensions.

I'm also interested in the timetable changes before the new trains arrive, they could probably get more out of intercity sets I guess. Norwich station has plenty of capacity, the pinch point will be trowse swing bridge I'm sure.

Sure will. It takes 10 sets to cover the Norwich service currently with generous 40ish minute turnrounds each end. If the plan is reducing journey times and turnrounds to cover the service with 9 sets Trowse Swing Bridge is indeed a significant factor.

Surely we are not saying that the two will not be compatible are we ?

On one of my local lines, Sudbury, the platforms at Sudbury and Marks Tey wouldn't be long enough for what I assume will be three-car bi-modes. Sudbury is 52m and I believe MKT is either 45 or 50m. The other two stations should be ok. Would the curved platform 3 at MKT also be an issue if the doors are towards the middle of the cars instead of the ends as on the current sprinters?

Also, platform 3 is not electrified so would the new trains be able to switch over from diesel to electric mode while in motion when they reach the mainline between Marks Tey and Colchester? I can't imagine NR electrifying platform 3 and the section of track merging onto the GER mainline.

I reckon would run diesel from Colchester, as long as they are not plug doors as well, 153's are barred P2 at Colchester, and a severe speed restriction when empty at Manningtree. (15)

It's not out of the question that there may be infrastructure upgrades, especially with clearance, to accommodate the new stock.

Another possibility is the 3/4 car regional trains may be articulated, therefore similar length to existing stock?

I think the articulated sections will measure 18.5m.

I've read in another thread (Anyone heading to Innotrans next month), that the Stadler trains for the UK will be unveiled at Innotrans.
EDIT-Sorry, big misread!!

All off the top of my head but here goes.

I reckon those 22 full-length 10 car Aventras will be used primarily for GEML, maybe with a couple for peaks on WA. At present, according to another poster, there are 12 x 12 car workings on GEML per peak. Some of those are to/from Ipswich so could be extended to run to/from Norwich.

The Norwich service, I would have thought will be a mixture of Stadler 12 for expresses and Aventra full-length 10 cars for services with a few more stops. Off peak, some those from the 22 x 10 car fixed formation Aventra sets that would normally sit in Orient Way awaiting the evening peak will, I assume, help out with Norwich services.

That's how I see it working anyway. Personally, I just hope that my peak trains on the Clacton branch are the 10 car full-length ones. It would be madness to have the shorter 2x5 car ones in peaks on our line.

I imagine some services will also be 2x5. Also gives possibility of joining and splitting on route.
