Class 185s and their braking system

Are 185s still the only DMU in the country to have a fully working hydrodynamic braking system, or has it even been isolated on these units? The 175s and 180s did have the system but was isolated a few years ago - are there no plans to reinstate it? It just seems a bit odd not to use a system which surely reduces the wear on the brake pads, especially on trains which reach 100mph and over.

Was there some sort of dangerous flaw with the hydrodynamic braking that resulted in its isolation on the 175s and 180s?

As far as I'm aware it was the hoses weren't up to the job on the 180s. The pressures created lead to the hydraulic hoses bursting and depositing their fluid onto the tracks causing a bit of a mess. The system was pretty good when operating. No idea why the issue hasn't / couldn't be cured though.

They were isolated when they ended up at Northern. One caused a fire IIRC. I think Alstom modified the hydro system along with other fixes when they went back to GWR. I'll ask a friend of mine who drives the 180s next time I see him.

The 185s sound like the engine is revving while braking so I think the hydrodynamic system is still active.

Yes it was a bit confusing the first few times I noticed until I realised why that was the case!
