At Blatchbridge Jn, does the mileage from the avoiding line, or the one from Frome itself continue onwards towards Taunton? Thank you.

Via Frome, as it is the original and longer route (both mileages are via Melksham) - from Castle Cary to Cogload it's via Newbury and Frome according to Trackmaps.

I think you meant Westbury, not Newbury. Thus not via the cut-offs (n'est-ce pas?).

No, Trackmaps specifically refers to Newbury - all possible routes go through Westbury!

I agree the mileage will be via the station as that was the route when the Somerton line opened.

A 1970 WTT says it's 1 chain extra via the Westbury cutoff, 15 chains less via the Frome one, and the figures given agree with Trackmaps.

The mileages around Westbury are complicated by the very different opening times of the different routes.

A Summary:

Reading to Hawkeridge/Westbury North/Fairwood (via Avoider) Junctions is miles from Paddington via Newbury and Lavington

Thingley to Dorchester via Melksham, Westbury, Frome, Castle Cary and Yeovil is miles from Paddington via Swindon

Castle Cary to Cogload Jn is miles from Paddington via Newbury, Lavington, Westbury & Frome ALs

Cogload Jn - Taunton is miles from Paddington via Box, Weston avoider.

At the West end of Castle Cary station there are 2 mileposts almost at the same point. One on the Up Athenley with 115mp ( from PAD via NBY ) and on the route to Yeovil with 129mp ( from PAD via Melksham ).

Not sure about the mileage being via the ALs. See my updated post above.
